p.5 #1 · 2nd Photographer Hasn't Delivered Images

I hate all of you!

No, but for real, Ken... It makes my life easier when I just take the cards at the end of the night. I have a box of like 200 bubble mailers in my office, I print a UPS label in my office, the UPS guy is there every day in the complex. If that doesn't work out, the UPS drop location is like 2 minutes fro my office.

It's really simple for me. Maybe my second has to wait for their cards and their check, but thems the breaks.

Inku... if I second you.. you can keep my cards for a month, as long as you let me wear the cotton carrier.

Thanks for chiming in folks. Definitely some good suggestions on dealing w/ cards/images from 2nds that I'll incorporate going forward. Plus the Inko Yo throwdown has been fun.

Send her a certified letter saying she has x amount of time to deliver or she will be visiting you in court. Threaten in a nice and legal way that the client will get involved in the lawsuit too. Which at that point the client will be demanding a lot more money than you would. Scare the crap out of her. Or just go pay her a visit and do not leave until you get the images.

It's been 9 days since she's been incommunicado. Next step -- paying her a nice visit. Anybody wanna join?

Now give me that bitches info so I can help get your files.

Oh dude, how I'm itching to out her!

Daboyle wrote:
If after 24 hours from then she doesnt comply, go ahead and file a small claims suit against her. She HAS to reply to that or it automatically is ruled in your favor.

DOCUMENT EVERYTHING YOU DO - if this falls through and your clients dont get what they paid for, you ultimately will be the one to answer for it and you better have documentation that you did everything in your realm possible to try and recover the files for them.

If my visit doesn't work then I'll send her that certified letter serving her notice for small claims court. Everything is documented, emails mainly, only had 1 phone interview a week prior to the shoot.

was going to write the same thing. this thread has turned out to be interestingly funny!

When booking a wedding a photographer makes demands; a meal, no RAW files, That they are the sole photographer and cameras are put away during formals, that they be provided with XX amount of time for photographs, how much they are paid.

When looking for a second a photographer often demands that the photographer have a certain camera, Canon or Nikon, often full frame with a set of high quality lenses. That they dress appropriately, that they not hand out marketing material or publish images on facebook.

As a second I make demands of the person who is going to pay me just as the photographer made demands of the client; my rate, and that cards are provided. If I can blog the images and use you as a reference for future work, that's nice, but not a deal breaker.

Like I said, there are two mindsets as to what a second photographer is. To some it's a trainee, working for experience, grateful to get a job, someone who you will eventually be competing with for work. To others a second should be just as skilled, capable of photographing the wedding solo if need be, takes direction, knows whats expected without being told. As a "professional second" this is the market I cater to and they often deal with my two "demands" because I offer experience, skill, I'm easy to work with, I take orders, I dress professionally, I'm capable of setting up lighting both quickly and effectively, I'm good with posing, I can carry equipment, I use quality equipment, I'm not nor will I ever be a competitor, I don't post images on facebook, and usually no one will even know my last name.

And like any other industry, for all that I offer, I like to be paid a fair wage, and one little thing that makes my job easier, being provided cards. It's a small issue, but I've heard of photographers who's contracts allow for a fuss if not provided a sandwich or sole camera rights. I've had scenarios where a photographer just didn't want to pay my rate saying "I'm only charging the couple $XXX for a second, can you just take that?" Sorry, I can't. I've also had others who charge a couple less than my rate for a second and pay the difference out of pocket. It's all about what a service is worth to someone. I'm sure many of you started out doing budget weddings for bare bones and as you gained experience, either photographing on the cheap or through 2nd shooting, you increased your rates and added to your contract. Who's to say "professional seconds" can't take that same path. At some point you decided you needed to add a meal to your contract to do your job. At one point I decided, I need to be provided with cards.

Hmm... Maybe this is where we're getting confused. See, I'm paying you to make MY life easier. Not to hit me up with all these demands. If being paid isn't enough to put your demands aside, I'll hire someone that will. Anyone that has had any job would agree that when you work for someone, they pay you and you play by their rules or you get fired.

Alan told me he doesn't want a gift certificate; he'd rather you do the massage yourself. He claims you have very soft yet strong hands. He wouldn't tell me how he knows that.

I'm failing see the hardship in providing cards.

Anyway, I'm just saying, some people like doing it that way.

It's about being a professional.

If the #1 shooter want's to deliver cards and send them by mail - then you as a second shooter and knowing the business, should have enough cards to do that.

If the #1 want them transferred by FTP then you should know how to do that and know what FTP is.

If the #1 shooter wants them transferred at the end of the night, then you as a second should have that extra time for that.

Why is it hard to just be prepared. Be a pro.

You know, there isn't a Union of Second Shooters that I am aware of....

If you don't like Inku's terms? Don't work with Inku. It really is that simple.

But for Pete's sake, stop trying to tell Inku he is wrong or being unreasonable about how he runs his business when he is the one writing the check.
