p.5 #8 · 2nd Photographer Hasn't Delivered Images | |

When booking a wedding a photographer makes demands; a meal, no RAW files, That they are the sole photographer and cameras are put away during formals, that they be provided with XX amount of time for photographs, how much they are paid.
When looking for a second a photographer often demands that the photographer have a certain camera, Canon or Nikon, often full frame with a set of high quality lenses. That they dress appropriately, that they not hand out marketing material or publish images on facebook.
As a second I make demands of the person who is going to pay me just as the photographer made demands of the client; my rate, and that cards are provided. If I can blog the images and use you as a reference for future work, that's nice, but not a deal breaker.
Like I said, there are two mindsets as to what a second photographer is. To some it's a trainee, working for experience, grateful to get a job, someone who you will eventually be competing with for work. To others a second should be just as skilled, capable of photographing the wedding solo if need be, takes direction, knows whats expected without being told. As a "professional second" this is the market I cater to and they often deal with my two "demands" because I offer experience, skill, I'm easy to work with, I take orders, I dress professionally, I'm capable of setting up lighting both quickly and effectively, I'm good with posing, I can carry equipment, I use quality equipment, I'm not nor will I ever be a competitor, I don't post images on facebook, and usually no one will even know my last name.
And like any other industry, for all that I offer, I like to be paid a fair wage, and one little thing that makes my job easier, being provided cards. It's a small issue, but I've heard of photographers who's contracts allow for a fuss if not provided a sandwich or sole camera rights. I've had scenarios where a photographer just didn't want to pay my rate saying "I'm only charging the couple $XXX for a second, can you just take that?" Sorry, I can't. I've also had others who charge a couple less than my rate for a second and pay the difference out of pocket. It's all about what a service is worth to someone. I'm sure many of you started out doing budget weddings for bare bones and as you gained experience, either photographing on the cheap or through 2nd shooting, you increased your rates and added to your contract. Who's to say "professional seconds" can't take that same path. At some point you decided you needed to add a meal to your contract to do your job. At one point I decided, I need to be provided with cards....Show more →
Hmm... Maybe this is where we're getting confused. See, I'm paying you to make MY life easier. Not to hit me up with all these demands. If being paid isn't enough to put your demands aside, I'll hire someone that will. Anyone that has had any job would agree that when you work for someone, they pay you and you play by their rules or you get fired.
