Not that this is up there with most on this thread, but it turns out it's easier to capture lightning handheld using the screen on the RX100 than through a viewfinder. It still took 30 shots or so. Last night as a really intense storm slid by to the west. Missed us completely.
Thinking about picking up a used rx 100 for my 12 yr. old nIece. We gave her a used slr and not a very high quality lens over a year ago. We didn't buy anything of great quality thinking that it would be only a passing fancy. However, she drags this setup with her just about everywhere. Her skills have improved dramatically in this time frame.
We're wondering about getting her a used rx100 (b&h had a couple) but wonder at the fragility of the camera.
Hoping if those of you who have used yours for a while can comment on this aspect of the rx 100.
I have had mine since intro and it has been through its paces a fair amount. I actually carry it in my pocket much of the time. I keep it with me when I go for walks, or out and about shopping or whatever. It gets used, but I don't abuse it.
So far, it has needed one trip to Sony for a sensor cleaning and adjustment.

Ah, Co. thunderstorms. We lived in Colorado Springs for a year a while back. Lots of wicked weather goes through there at times but still I loved it while we were there. Nothing like sitting on your deck and watching the deer walk thru while at the same time the hummingbirds were busy at the feeder.
I think we'll pick up this sony from B&H. A few dings etc. according to them but everything works as it should.
Thanks for your help.
We got this used RX100 from B&H for my niece as I had previously mentioned. It does have a couple of cosmetic marks on the front about the size of a pen point but all else looks fine. Those marks, two of them, are on the front facing rotating, focusing ring.
Having purchased other used items from B&H I know they do test items before accepting them so maybe this is ok, except that the focusing ring around the lens seems quite stiff. It does rotate but I would have expected it to rotate more easily. Similar to a standard focusing ring.
Now I understand that this ring can control several aspects other than focus so I'm wondering if this is the reason for the way it feels.
Anybody have any thoughts about this?
I have fired off a few shots and viewed them in PS. They do look pretty good so maybe this stiff ring is just a matter of little use
I love the small form factor and the ability to share batteries and EVF with the RX1. For me the tilt screen and EVF were reasons to upgrade to the Mark II.

Mine is smooth, but not loose in anyway. Compared to my focus ring on a Nikon lens, its way tighter, but as I say, very smooth feeling.
