Bob Israel,
I've been on the zeiss forum for a while and enjoyed your shots there. Thinking about getting one of these little cameras to use when I'm out shooting somewhere that makes it difficult to bring the 35 and a few zeiss lenses.
Would be interested in your critique of this sony camera.
thanks,
dylan
Hi Dylan - I won't claim to have done any rigorous studies on the this camera and I'm still learning its strengths and weaknesses. The camera does a great job under many circumstances including on a tripod with long exposures (see posting above). I do notice that the camera does have a bit of noise at native ISO but I doubt it carries through to a printed image. I do notice it though. Some have said that Sony sacrificed some noise at native ISO for better low light performance. I can attest to the low light performance too, the camera does a great job. Even at high ISO values (6400) while there is grain, the images are sharp. All in all this camera can't be beat for its overall performance and size. It makes the RX1 feel big!
This is a little OT, but does anyone know the maximum recording length using the mp4 1440 x 1080/30 codec, please?
This is the relevant quote from dpr:
• Full HD & HD: Up to 4 GB or 29 min. 59 sec.
• L and M: Up to 4 GB or 1 hour
The only problem is that "L and M" is not defined in the review, or at least I could not see it!
I can say that this odd-ish codec works without transcoding in Final Cut Pro 7, but selecting the same codec in the NEX 6 bodies I have produces a maximum file with a time limit of around 23 minutes. This is because of a max. file size limit of 2.15GB. If the RX100 can use the same codec but make a file of 4GB, a real problem is solved for me.
Just got mine late yesterday from KEH. I ordered a slightly used ex+. I can find only one small mark about the size of the tip of a lead pencil on the very bottom of the camera. Otherwise it looks very good. Problem tho is that it came without any paperwork so I'm about to check for an online owner's manual.
I expect to find several but wonder if any of you have found one to be better than the rest.
Uno mas, por favor. Light was changing a bit when I took these, so it's completely unscientific. Just a minor comparison since I had both cameras with me. I was able to pull more detail out of the NEX shot (that took a lot of tweaking). Detail is not quite there in the RX100 shot, though I also like it a lot until it was sitting beside the shot from it's bigger brother.
Do you think that the settings you used on the rx100 should have been done differently or do you think it's really just the camera??
It sort of looks like the rx100 is sharper in the closer images but not in the distance?
If you have a suggestion for different settings on the RX100, fire away. I have full exif on both pictures. RX100 is not sharper for sure at larger viewing sizes, and does not have the same native contrast. I would guess files take resizing and/or sharpening differently, and that's probably part of what you are seeing, as well as any differences in processing and changes in lighting.
Focus point on both images was the nearer rock face, guesstimated that for 1/3 of the way into the desired DOF.
I am begrudgingly starting to respect the RX100. It's not the same as NEX, but I feel like I am getting good results from it for my intended purpose. Better results than I really expected.
RX-100 is not as good as NEX, and both NEX-6/7 are below full frame D600 (but NEX-7 details , but that shouldn't be so surprising... Sensor size does matter.

NOPE. The only way I would get that shot is with a 400mm!
Years ago I shot some tiny spiders (those babies of those big spiders) with a 60mm macro lens (a with flash, that was what a tiny non-teaching department in the university has) , it was kind of scary when strong wind blows the big mother towards your head. Too bad I don't have the negatives....

I don't think I want to go overseas travel with just a RX-100... but it is good as what it is.
I know what you mean, but I am finding myself less likely to worry about taking bigger gear... I had my NEX with me on my trip, and didn't bother getting it out. I printed the mushroom shot posted above, and it looks good on the fridge.

Very nice pics, but sagging glass is a myth. Most likely the glass was just made with a process that produced panes that weren't very flat.

RX-100 works best when you don't make direct comparison with bigger gears
This is a OT, my NEX is lacking a good "normal zoom", and a good tele zoom (but I can't live with 55-210 in most case), and the worst thing is I can't focus at night with the grainy viewfinder/LCD, making me hesitate to leave my DSLR at home (also makes me hesitate to buy expensive lens for NEX).

Yeah. I'm still considering trying OMD for the glass selection. I absolutely could use the weather/dust sealing, too. Seems like OMD alongside of RX100 would be nicely complimentary.

I will probably get an OMD when it became cheaper (used). I already have 3 lenses for it... 14-45/3.5-5.6, 20/1.7, 45-200/4-5.6, I prefer them to the NEX equivients (I use them on GF-1).
One thing I've learned in the backpacking trip to Iran is the Persian numbers (note the number plate), since Persian numbers are wildly used (price tag, timetable, number plate on cars etc..) instead of Arabic numbers.
Bus running between big cities are actually REALLY good, especially those new deluxe bus ( 2x2 comfy seats in a row), European travelers I've met also said those bus are better than they could find in Europe. (But the drivers are crazy)
