Nice! Looks like I'll have myself a used FF mirrorless body in about 6 years!

We can dream about FF, but knowing Canon it could just as well be revolutionary 4K video

I could get behind a 5D4 sensor in a beefed up M5 body. That's the obvious move right?

Yes, like that rumored G7X III; design looks much better than the older version (un-Canon but with a slight Powershot S flavor) and having 4K is almost as expected now (even for a Canon). But if it has the same compromised lens (compromised as in lacking quality at WA and for closeups) I will pass ...

Owning an EOS-M5, that would be... incredible.

Just about everything on that camera has been done right, however, I would expect the full-frame version to have a significantly larger battery, more buttons for custom functions, thus being larger, and have provision for a battery grip. And have advertised weather resistance that Sony seems averse to (and I think my EOS-M5 is probably more weather resistant than the current A7R III/A9's, so that shouldn't be hard )

I'd be interested in a Canon mirrorless as long as it has an EF mount (not an EF-M). I know you can use an adapter but that's not the most convenient way of doing things.

I'd would think that the adapter solution would be the most viable. Nikons Z-mount would eat Canons EF whatever as if it was sushi otherwise. An adapter for your favorite existing lenses are a mere 25 USD. The Meikes are as good as the OEMs BTW, I have one of each...

Yes, makes more sense to have a Canon FF mirrorless camera with a mount similar to EF-M and sell it with a free EF adapter installed (at least if no mirrorless kit lens is included). Those who don't like dealing with adapters just leave that one adapter locked in place and pretend they have a mirrorless camera with EF mount

How would you like a DSLR with a hybrid viewfinder? Will it be too big and expensive? I think I could use such a camera. EVF for adapted manual focus lenses and possibly other advantages, without giving up the OVF completely. If the requirement isn't a small camera but the functionality a mirrorless offers.

Regarding lens mount options, there aren't that man ways for Canon to go with a potential high end mirrorless camera body:

1. Use the EF mount. Possible but not so likely, as it would be contrary to the desire for smaller body.

2. Use the M mount. Probable, since Canon already uses it for mirrorless, it retains the smaller body size, and it can use EF lenses with an adapter.

3. Use some other new mount that we've not seen before. Don't bet on that one.

If the rumor of an eventual high-end Canon mirrorless body has legs, I'd bet on option #2. At first this will have the disadvantage of requiring the use of the adapter which, while it works, adds an extra layer of complexity. The obvious advantage is that essentially all Canon lenses could be used on the camera. That would make the system a lot more appealing to current Canon users. (I think that current Canon users will be a bigger market than current users of other existing mirrorless systems — I wouldn't expect to see a lot of Sony, Olympus, and Fujifilm users switch to Canon any time soon.)

I'd bet on the M mount plus adapter, with a gradual introduction of better M lenses over time. (Sort of a Sony-style intro, except that the adapted and new lenses will all come from Canon.)

Time will tell.

That might be the worst possible solution though for production complexity and cost. After all, wasn't one of the main ideas behind mirrorless to get rid of the flipping mirror and the inaccuracies, precision mechanics requirements, QC control issues and vibration related to it?

I believe the EF-M mount is big enough for FF sensor, or is it? I agree with Dan that most likely will be EF-M mount (if that can cover FF sensor). I also agree this will be a camera for people still stuck in the Canon world and maybe, just maybe could attract back some Sony guys who still use mostly Canon lenses....but Canon will really have to wow that crowd to get them back.

If Canon's adaptor allows AF as good as a native EF-M (FF) lens and if Canon has AF features as good as Sony's latest series then Canon probably doesn't have to rush out native EF-M FF lenses as they won't be any smaller anyways based on Sony's high end FE lenses. They should concentrate on getting out native EF-M FF lenses in the type of focal lengths that can be made smaller on a mirrorless camera and won't have to worry about something like an EF-M 70-200/2.8 or 100-400 for a good while.

I think I recall reading somewhere that the M mount has the same diameter as the Sony mount used on their full frame sensor cameras, so it is my understanding that M will support full frame.

Because the "Sony" folks have already made their move and because Sony has begun to fill out their lens offerings, I can't see very many current Sony users coming back into the Canon fold. (There is always some back and forth between brands, but it isn't a major thing.)

The most probably markets for high quality Canon mirrorless cameras, in my guesstimate, would include:

1. Current Canon users who have not felt that a switch to another brand was compelling, even though that other brand has some objective advantages (and disadvantages).

2. Canon photographers who aren't interested in adapting their lenses to another brand of body.

3. Canon users who have happily used Canon DSLRs while watching the progress in the design and performance of mirrorless cameras and who feel that the capability of mirrorless cameras for their photography is becoming sufficiently advanced.

4. Canon photographers that Canon wants to move to mirrorless, possibly in anticipation of a future inflection point at which mirrorless performance matches or exceeds that of DSLRs in all or nearly all ways.

5. Photographers new to the quality camera market who are attracted to Canon.

I agree as well. It's either have native EF lens comparability or via adapter similarly. It seems Nikon going with the new mount for mirror less as well. 2018 is going to be an exciting years for mirrorless. Sony, Nikon and Canon finally offer FF mirrorless options.

Of course, but Canon has released a patent for it. What are they thinking?

I actually wouldn't mind an EF mount ML pro body that is larger sized. After using the Sony's I have little desire for their ergonomics. Doesn't have to be the size of current DSLR's but certainly I would like it larger then the A7/A9's.
