Well I have the panny 100-300'which is 200-600 equivalent, so there not much out there longer. It's really not bad at all.

But if you are taking long glass then you may as well take then SLR.

OMD is phenomenal as a general use camera. Wouldn't try to make a birding or serious landscape setup with it.

And what makes you think attaching your OMD to a 500mm mounted on a tripod would not be suitable for perched birds. Seems to me 1000mm has its advantages.

Nope it doesnt. Question was about using EF lens. You can, if you dont mind manual focus, which with NEX isnt terribly difficult.

I see what you mean Fred. A full frame mirrorless with tilt and swivel LCD would be great for landscape photographers, but they'll have to do with the 5DmkIII. In the meantime try the tablet solution or smartphone and DSLR controller instead and

Where have you read about an optional EVF viewfinder?
Canon is selling the new mirrorless for $800. If it's a tremendous success, it could mean end of line for the Rebel series. If that is where the market is going, producing a 'full-frame' version could be next.

Oh I'm not saying it wouldn't take great pictures, but frankly there are setups more suited to the task.

Interesting news for the Canadian FMers. Looks like pre-order pricing at Vistek is $829 for the 22 + flash and $879 for the 18-55 + flash. That is at least $100 cheaper than US pricing so far. Something that we aren't that familiar with in the Canon world

This just got a lot more interesting for me.

Sorry, I haven't read it, can't tell you more though. Already said too much I believe. I just wanted to make it clear that what we see at this introduction isn't everything that will be part of the EOS-M system. Also third part manufacturers will bring new products for Canon EOS(-M) The EOS-M with a plain fixed LCD isn't what a lot of photographers will appreciate. Solutions will be available soon.

I definitely expect the EOS-M and derivatives will eat the business of the Rebel line for a great part. Low production cost and profit per unit is probably encouraging for Canon. At the consumer side I do expect a rapid change in perception of the "seriousness" of these mirrorless type of camera's. Modern consumers, especially younger people, do perceive the SLR type camera as old fashioned. Mirrorless cameras are no longer lower in quality from the mainstream SLR cameras. Their ergonomics and photographic experience create new possibilities the SLR never had. This is where the market is heading.

Tradional SLR manufacturers like Canon and Nikon will keep their high end models featured with upperclass image quality and full fledge options as long as they can. Their investment in manufacturing SLR technology is large. Full frame is still one of the main separating qualities from APS-C (or smaller) based sensor cameras. The way Canon and Nikon did their marketing for the 1-series and the M is a bottom up strategy. I don't see a lot of reasons for Canon, Nikon to bring a high end full frame mirrorless soon. It would be much more a thing for Sony, Samsung, Hasselblad, Fuji, Kodak, or Pentax. These are the brands with either the vision (Samsung), the ambition for leadership (Sony), or a heritage (Hasselblad, Fuji, Kodak, Pentax) that fits perfectly well to a full frame mirrorless concept. A low cost EF mirrorless stripped down 5DmkIII though, would be an interesting low-end full frame offering of EOSfun. Think a combination of the 5DmkII like feature set (and sensor qualities) in an ubersized EOS-M body. It would mark Canon's position against the competition, and perfectly fit into the strategy to keep the D-SLR type camera on top of the product line. That however would be food for the trolls who'd rather like to have a 5DmkIII at the price and size of an EOS-M ff and complain about a crippled model

I'm curious why Canon announced the camera in July and will ship it in October? It's not like this is a 1DX-type camera, though it is a new system. Usually with their consumer oriented products it's available at or close to the announcement date. Trying to judge consumer demand and fine-tune production accordingly? Just seems too long a delay for impatient consumers.

And it's so far ahead of Photokina. Really has me wondering what else we'll see from them in September...

The EF-M is really late getting out the gate. Most Canon DSLR shooters wanting an advanced P&S already own an Oly, Panasonic M4/3, GX1 or Fujita X10/100. While the EF adapter is nice, what attracts most DSLR owners is the small size with a pancake prime or short ratio zoom. A large EF lens on adapter will defeat most of the camera's charm and be awkward to work with. I suspect the core market will be well heeled cellphone and p&s upgraders.

Well said. I would not plan on hooking up a EF lens to such a small body. The reason to be willing to compromise is to get great image quality in a small package.

You are not going to get an optical viewfinder in a camera that supports a complete range of 10 mm to 1600 mm (800 x 2) lenses without one of these:

A) Restricting the range of lenses to a small range like 22mm to 55 mm, ala Leica (35mm to 90 mm)

B) No interchangeability: fixed 4x zoom.

C) Non-optical electronic

D) Bulky DSLR format

or

E) micro 4/3 format DSLR ala OM D-5.

You are the only one who used the word "Optical", All the others merely want a viewfinder, we know it would be a EVF. However, with no connection for one, unless it would use the HDMI out, there is not much hope.

Sure. That would be option C, non-optical electronic. EVF should be specified as such, if the default simpler optical viewfinder is not meant.

Sometimes the X-10 / X-100 are mentioned, which are fixed lens optical viewfinder cameras.

Ok, let's just say it's your gut feeling about the EVF add-on!
Your comment about the "bottom up strategy" makes sense.

I have also heard rumors of an EVF and a higher-end mirror less. Perhaps from Canon Rumors? I'm not 100% sure.

I ordered one of these immediately. I love my T4i for still images and video. The opportunity to get that same sensor, LCD, touch screen, and video auto focus in a body 1/2 the width, depth, and weight is fantastic.

I already have an EVF that I use with my T4i for video. The Hooman with a HoodCrane is also an excellent solution that preserves the touch sensitive function on these cameras.

I never care at all what a camera costs. My only real concern is the net cost of ownership.

I don't expect that this will cost much more than $100 to $150 max per year to own.

I still compare that cost to the cost of film 10 years ago.

I used to budget a minimum of $5,000 a year for film for my personal projects from, 1998 to 2004. In 2004 I switched completely from 6x7 film to the 1DsII. At about $1,500 a year in depreciation, even that camera paid for itself in 3-4 months.

Now we have that same quality in the T4i and EOS M for a couple of hundred a year. Definitely a good time to be a photographer!

Best,
Michael

Looks to me like this is $100 less than the e-p3 with a larger sensor and stop faster lens.

probably performs faster too.

the E-P3 includes a nice little pop up flash and can be fitted with either an optical VF or EVF. of course I've not seen or touched an EFM but the E-P3 does focus very fast and has been available for 18 months or so. Oly has been updating the E-PX series every year or two so I wouldn't be surprised to see an E-P4 in the near future. The OM-D is an amazing little piece o' kit for a only few more Benjamins.

Good to hear there will be an optional EVF soon. That however only addresses one of my 3 main gripes about the EOS-M; the other two being slow AF and the same-old limited low ISO dynamic range.

Yes, the EOS-M and current lens offerings (including patents for diffractive optics) tell us one thing: weight and size reduction are going to be big for Canon. Can't wait to see when Canon will roll out a small f/2.8-3.5 lens like the Panasonic m43 14-50 f/2.8-3.5 OIS.

Hopefully they do not forget to improve on their sensor development and phase-contrast AF algorithm... they are way behind the competition in these all-important departments.

I would not have purchased my G3 early this year had I known of the eos-m. I doubt I'd switch since I do like the panny and 20mm lens quite a bit. The G3 OVF is a big plus, along with how the controls are laid out.

Hi guys I wanna add my point of view on EOS-M

After last trip with my 24-105 and 50d I said enough. Couple hours of walking gave me so hard back pain I started to looking for light setup. I usually taking concert photos or doing some strobist things.

Anyway I went to the mall and I LOVED Olympus E-PM1 so light and SO fast to focus. But the kit lens was really bad and I want "kit" zoom for convenience.

The Canon droped EOS-M bomb, and I was like 800$?! Add around 23% to this price as a tax for being european. It's insane, but I thought it through and I'm selling my stuff to get EOS-M.

I love quality of a L lens but if I can get it similar quality to it from such small camera I'm in. Many of you say "oh Nex is so similar and cost less", I love how the NEX feel but basic lenses like 18-55 and 16mm just sucks. I'm one of those people that care more about lens then about body. Plus hot shoe for strobist is a big thing.

So final word for me getting rid of L lens plus body and other crap is worth the switch. I have NO fun running with DSLR, sure I won't be able to do wedding and such but this is not what I'm doing. Still I strongly belive if someone wanna get serious about photography DSLR is the way to go even T4i is better then EOS-M couse you got control over settings and got much better grip (plus better lenses). But if those MTFs about EOS-M lenses are true that will fit my style MUCH better.

I'm getting a bit,ah, older too and can't carry the gear I did back in the day (2 bodies, 2 zooms & tripod). However, my 5D2 and 24-105L still feel light and portable and, indeed , I carried it for many hours daily during a recent 3 week trip and I was fine. It helps a lot to carry it in a bag that hugs and conforms to the body (thin messenger type bag) with a really good sling strap. I wear it high--like a bike messenger--so the weight is distributed fairly evenly across both sides of the strap and bag, rather than a dead weight digging into the shoulder.

It would surprise me if the M focuses faster than an E-P3 with the latest Oly lenses. The E-P3's focus is pretty much instantaneous.
