It is very subtle how they express. Just my impression, and if I don't have to, I would rather not elaborate, please don't take it too hard.

I mean its the first generation of their new product line, I'm sure it'll have many short comings.

It's exciting though, Canon will put a lot of pressure on NEX and I see that as a good thing. I wonder what EVF they'll end up using.

I don't like the lack of the tilt screen. The 22/2 seems like a good choice to me. I hope it is a good one and hopefully the other lenses that are yet to come are going to be interesting. The Oly with primes and Panasonic with new fast zooms have really raised the level to match.

As to AF speed: Take a look at this video. The touch to focus and touch shutter capability.

&feature=player_embedded

At least in this example, both of these functions are DOG slow. Do the same thing on my E-M5 and the cam will focus and shoot nearly instantly. I reiterate. Ugh.

If Canon can bring AF speed to the level of other mirrorless options, as well as provide some good small lenses, this will grow into a great system, but right now I'm not impressed.

Hmm, guess some folks don't like dedicated dials for things like EC, shutter speed and aperture and prefer an EVF to an optical finder....

Note I shoot a NEX-7, which has dedicated ISO, Shutter speed and aperture dials the way mine is configured (pretty much permanently in Manual Exposure). And I don't much like the Fuji hybrid finder, it's a mediocre optical finder and a mediocre EVF, I'd rather have either a superb optical finder or a superb EVF, and the 7 gets me the latter (plus focus peaking).

Figure it had to happen sooner or later. For ages photographers have been asking for things like more dedicated control, optical finders etc. Now I guess we have gotten to the point where a younger generation who never even used such style cameras now actually has no desire for those features and instead prefers things like multifunction soft keys and EVF's.

Strange how technology and taste change.

I'm actually a fan of minimalist controls. I don't want 16 dozen dedicated controls, I want the basics, done right. I also don't mind control wheels which change assignment when they change modes, since I rarely change modes. The NEX-7 allows me a setup where I essentially never have to use the menus to do anything other than format a card, the Fuji's don't offer that in my somewhat limited experience.

Image quality: NEX-5N vs. EOS-M (same 650D sensor) vs. G3 (reportedly G5 has the same JPEG IQ) vs. V1

Excuse me, has anybody noticed the word Phase-detect in the dpreview spec list? If this is what it's supposed to mean then some of us keeping our old trusted long whites could find additional interest in this camera. Unfortunatly I kind of doubt that this is true, where's the circuitry to be found??

On-Sensor PDAF, like the T4i has for LV/Video. Pretty much requires an STM lens for good performance.

I agree.

Have you seen the black version of the camera the guy is holding at 3:52? It has a different, beefier grip. Or am i dreaming?

Edit: It's a camera cover, the white one is at 7:06.

Being a pre-production camera, I think it's premature to draw conclusions about the regular production camera, I doubt FW is finalized, hard to say if hardware is finalized too.
It reminds me of the EP1/2 AF performance.

And honestly, I don't use AF much any more, so it's not a deal breaker at this point in time.

Yea, but no focus peaking, no tilt-able LCD and no EVF is a deal breaker.

And the EM-5 actually look better than the T4i, what's up with Canon these days?

Well, thats not exactly fair as EM-5 is highly stylized camera that looks better than most current cams. Tho not all ppl like retro styling. I like it cause it looks nice and cause there isnt any other mirrorless that would in same time looked nice and worked nice. Lately it seems that there are no good camera designers..

I don't think that sensor has been improved in a generation or two.

I think if you look at when the NEX-3 and NEX-5 was launched, Canon is kind of in the same boat but they did better than Sony did by including at least a real hotshoe and a touch screen system that actually works.

The menu system certainly looks more useable than the NEX one so far.

FWIW, as a user of both cameras, I don't have to go into the menus with either the Nex-7 or X100, other than to format cards. The advantage of the X100's dials is that I can see what the camera is set to without powering it on or using the LCD/EVF, but I think the Nex-7's implementation works well, too.

To me, the X100 is about the hybrid viewfinder, which is apparently love it or hate it. I love it, and, since I use the OVF 90% of the time, the lower quality EVF isn't much of an issue for me.

In terms of this Canon, I don't think I could deal with no tilt screen and mostly touchscreen control. I do like the potential of the 22/2 lens, though.
