Thanks Peter! She was literally abandoned in one of the remote Southern California canyons and wandered up to our club's shooting range. I'm surprised she made it through the night without becoming coyote food. My daughters were with me, helping run a match, and insisted on taking her home to join our other two rescue dogs (from a pet rescue organizational) for just one night. Right -- just one night! About four years later now.
Apparently it's deer week here in my neck of the woods; both of these shot with a 500 f/4L and 1.4x III extender. The portrait is barely cropped (one edge to remove an inconvenient limb) - I find an almost tame one every once in a while...
The night skyline is of old-town Quebec an hour or so before sunrise last week; delightfully deserted, wonderfully quiet, even up on the bluff at "the most photographed hotel in North America", at least according to the guidebooks... That was made with a 50L, stopped down to f/11 or so for the sake of DOF...
This must be the easiest BIF shot type to make ever. A big contrasty-coloured bird, with a straight line flight pattern, flying against empty sky background. All one needs to do is stop the lens down and fire away, and just about any camera lens combination will do.

Thanx, Ralphie....such big and easy flyers I do at 3-5 FPS typically, depending on the camera, proximity to the bird as well as their path vector, i.e., towards me, or tangential to my panning circle, or in between those two extreme cases.
I am sure Fred could do those at 1 FPS, one handed, while making a cell phone call too.

As is customary with me, I'm starting to post summer pics on September 1st... though over in these parts, it's already been autumn for 3 weeks.
As I'm sorting the pics from the last few months, I'll be posting some more. No masterpieces, just a chronicle of this summer (which was admittedly pretty nasty - I've lost a dear friend in a car accident on the 22nd and have been upset ever since).
