Here ya go Peter, a few ripe Roma tomatoes from our summer garden. It's not the sharpest image, it's been awhile since I've shot handheld with this rather heavy lens, but...
The image is from a 40D with a 3 decades old nFD 200mm f4 Macro. Attached to the EOS Digital body via Ed Mika's .5mm FD-to-EF Adapter. I shot wide open at f4, 1/1000, this was the last of 15 images and to my surprise the sharpest of the set.
It's clear that I'll need a sturdier support; tri/monopod or stronger arms to get sharper images. The cool thing is that even tho I'm not able to focus to infinity, there is about 45ft of focus distance
There'll be more images from my EOS bodies and old FD lenses this summer, next is a more controlled setup with the 200 mac. New and old tech does work together
That's great, Jerry, the clarity, exposure and colours are first class. Boy, those tomatoes must taste very good.
Here is something for all those folks who think one needs a very special/expensive setup to shoot BIF.....not always neccessary.
Three summers ago I did a whole series of pijuns and terns in flight using 40D + 100mm f/2.8 USM Macro (non-L).
Wow Peter, how do you get so close with a 100...those are amazing Pigjun shots, the first, top right wing arch/shape reminds of an ocean wave. Both are spot on focus, the eyes so clear...and with a 40D...you must be quite quick on the draw!
Company popped by unannounced this afternoon so our excursion to the land of BIF was not to be...perhaps tomorrow
And yes, the tomatoes are quite yummy!
Jerry, at that time I had several gifted stunt pijuns working for me. However, since a Cooper's hawk had moved into the neighbourhood a couple of years ago, my models have largely dispersed. The most unfortunate outcome of such disappearance is that at present I lack suitable targets to test well some aspects of servo AF performance of 1DX.
I've been a bit absent from this thread in recent times. Been a busy few weeks and almost all my summer shooting has been with my new Fuji X10, which doesn't really qualify for this thread. I return with a segue to the current "feel" of the thread - me pretending i'm a fine art photographer

A Stargate opened up in your neighbourhood pond ?
Psych, just do not walk thru it whatever you do, who knows what infernal things and creatures could be waiting for you on the other side.

Thank you Kevin...the old glass keeps on tickin'... I just came in from hauling around the FD400 f2.8L and the required tripod/gimbal head, but slim pickings right now. I did find a rather large bumble-bee hanging out on one of the hemlocks...

Well done all, but we also have to thank Jerry and Edd for reminding us that there is still spunk left in the old glass.
I tell you, I love my 1DsMkII despite all obsolete features, poor ISO capability and all that jazz. However, when combined with 800L, I am happy with JPGs that I get outta that union.
