Psych, they are all excellent combinations, but 500 II is probably where your sweet FL spot is, + the lens is significantly lighter than 400 II, + it works great with 1.4xTC MkIII. (haven't tried 2xTC MkIII yet on it).
Mind you, 400 II is peerless amongst all supertelephoto lenses, but you'd probably end up using it with the 1.4xTC, and the lens is fairly heavy too.

I'd say 500 II is quite tractable even for retired folks who are not in their prime any longer.
Peter,
I returned from "Spin Class" yesterday and said to my lovely bride of 32 years "Laura killed me" and her response was "tell Laura to call me when I need to pickup the body."
I'm thinking 500L II because I will go out for 8 to 10 hours in the heat and the cold, not because I am old

What a nice shot. It looks like you and the new camera/lens are getting along fine.
Thanx, Jerry.....remember, we are talking an almost $20k setup here........so the expectations on it ought to be very high.........that's why my rection to the new gears of this sort is lukewarm: it is good, but is it $20k good ?

When someone looks at your work they do not know what you spent They will just say wow. I think that is worth 20k. Besides it is only money.

I have to be honest - i would have pretty high expectations with that level of investment.

So is it worth 20k?
Depends on how one looks at it. People spend crazy amounts of money on their hobbies, leisure and recreation, with no technical, or business, or ROI justification whatsoever.

Peter, from your TIF, it is patently clear that it wasn't made by anything that has walked this earth before, rather by something that can walk on water.

Thank you kindly, John......having good gears, compliant models and an old man's luck....that all helps.
Here is a family of some grebes...they are related to ducks, I guess. The young one (#1 and #4) seems to be doing great. The parents are #3 and #4 (I can't tell the male-female difference) .

I've seen images of eagles with that intent/posture, but never a tern...wonderful capture Peter!
There is a possibility a pond may be involved in weekend activities, if not then some flowers and a 3 decades old 200 mac and a digital body will be involved, I'll post an image if I bag anything elusive

Thank you, Jerry, I am glad you like the stuff.
I hope you'll be able to visit the pond this weekend........the ponds are usually a treasure trove of diverse things to photograph, and often the light is good as well as water reflections. I love photographing around ponds in my area. It matters not what one photographs, it is much more important how one does it, and also having fun in the process.
Do not hesitate to give us more images from your summer garden too...those you posted before were excellent.
