p.1 #1 · Schneider-Kreuznach Releases 14mm f/2 (AF!) for m4/3

Cool to see this! Schneider just announced their first micro 4/3 lens, and it's actually a lens designed truly for the format (not a port from NEX), with full autofocus and aperture, so they're going to be doing completely native lenses, which is just great to see. While I'm sure it'll be quite pricey, I'd expect the image quality to be incredible...

Not their fault for leaving the hole, but I really would have liked to see a 17mm or 18mm f1.4....maybe that will be on their road map.

Very cool to see this native glass though.

Nice. Hopefully there are plans for a T/S lens as well.

17mm F1.4 please.

The build quality looks very nice though, very Zeiss like.

Great news for m43, wonder if the focus ring is typical m43 style or similar to the 12/2 (witch would be great).

You can use adapter and for example Nikkor lens as T/S lens. Or pretty much every other lens for FF and bigger. Not much need for dedicated T/S lens.. and anyway they wont be smaller as you still need at least FF image circle to have functional T/S lens.

Focus by-wire 99%.. That style of 12/2 is something that every m4/3 manufacturer should copy, excelent idea from Olympus.

Kind of wish for a bigger gap between the 12f2. Still it must be an indication of the popularity of micro 4/3.

Hmmmmm ... Made in Germany - yes! But I will be quite happy with a Zeiss lens Made in Japan. C'mon Zeiss ... jump on the bandwagon already! I am pretty sure we will see Canon and Nikon m43 glass (and bodies) before too long - they have no choice as m43 is arguably the fastest growing segment of the photography market.

I would say mirrorless in general is the fastest growing segment, not just m4/3 on its own. It'll be interested to see how the various 3rd party manufacturers go about designing lenses for the various systems. Do they take the Voigtlander and Schneider approach, and design m4/3 specific lenses, or do they take the Sigma (and rumored Tamron) approach and design the same lenses for m4/3 and NEX? I would imagine that Zeiss would make m4/3 specific lenses, since they are under contract with Sony for NEX lenses separately.

When's the last time Zeiss made an autofocus lens that wasn't made by Sony?

I just don't see them doing it.

I don't either. If they do it, they'll likely be manual focus...IF they do it.

I don't know of a tilt AND shift adapter for m4/3 (or Nex for that matter). I have a tilt adapter for Nex that I use with an 18mm OM and I've just ordered the same style for m4/3 (also to use with OM).

That is true, but due to the 2x crop factor, when you mount that Nikon 35mm you've then got a 70mm equiv tilt/shift lens. Can still be fun for some creative shots but of little interest for most landscapers.

When I had the Nikon 24/45/85 PC-E set I used the 24mm about 95% of the time.

I was actually rather jealous of Canon users for their 17mm tilt/shift as well

Being able to corrective keystoning on buildings, trees etc is a huge reason many want a t/s lens and so is being able to shift the plane of focus to achieve the look of very deep DoF alone a given plane, which is again best utilized shooting wide.

I don't think a 14mm native t/s lens would be a huge seller anyways, but it would garner a lot more interest than the basically nil interest people seem to have in the tilt/shift adapters for legacy glass right now due to the crop factor on m4/3

Well, according to this post, there will be a NEX version of the lens also:

http://www.mirrorlessrumors.com/schneider-will-make-a-nex-version-of-the-24mm-f2-0-m43-lens-and-more-new-info/

I read the post three times and must confess that I can't understand it. The fact that the 14mm lens is a 28mm equivalent on m4/3 does not mean the lens will be a similar focal length to the Zeiss 24 on NEX.

Yeah, Jeff, that is confusing. Are they saying they're going to use the same lens with a different mount, or they're going to make a 28mm equiv.?? If Schneider makes a 14mm (21mm equiv. ) with AF for NEX, that would be pretty huge news, despite the high cost, because, with the Sony fast-standard coming this year, a high quality wide angle prime is the biggest missing piece.

An AF 14/2 for APS-C has got to be much huger than that judging from the lens mount. They're also making 2 more MFT lenses... interesting!

Q1 2013 seems really far away.
