p.1 #1 · The X100, is it out of beta now?

After reading this, I might give the X100 another go at it.

http://www.adorama.com/alc/0013738/article/Fujifilm-X100-With-New-Firmware-A-Street-Photography-Powerhouse

Of course there's always the X2 to contend but is it twice as good? Probably not.

http://www.adorama.com/alc/0013722/article/Leica-X2-Street-Photography-Stress-Test

I also might have to take back what I've been saying about the lens' infinity performance. Looking at my files again and updating the files to LR4, they look quite good.

I seem to prefer these a lot more as black and white though. While Fuji color is great, it doesn't seem to have any flair, at least in these files so far.

12 mpx still feels really cramped and I wish it had an automatic lens cap... but maybe if the used prices drop to $750?

Fuji color is great, but I certainly prefer your vision in B&W far better.

Glad to see people are finally coming around to the X100 though, its really been improved for quite a while now, with the 1.20 F/W just being the finishing touch.

Seems like a camera that everyone tried when it came out, thought the AF was slow, and thusly wrote off ever since which created a big gap between those who stuck with and kept trying to argue how the AF really worked pretty well.

Seems finally word has gotten out and folks are giving it another try.

Well, I miss mine and will likely pick one up again sometime. Not sure I would take a chance on a used one though, at least until Fuji officially states they will cover under warranty any X100 which suffers the sticky aperture issue. The one I bought new late last year had the problem, though Fuji fixed it rather quickly. Seems like buying a used one could be a bit risky.

Personally I really loved my X100 (quirks and all) and I would buy another one in a heartbeat if I had some extra cash.
It really is a killer little camera.

I never had any issues with the sticky aperture blades, despite having a very early model, but I would want to know that Fuji would cover the problem if it arose. (Kind of like Canon did with the 1DmkIII AF issues)

I ironically sold mine and just dropped it off at FedEx this afternoon. I had it serviced by Fuji a couple months ago for the "SAB" so I think the buyer can sleep easy even though he did buy a used one.

Well, now that the X100 has dropped below $1k new at some stores, I bit the bullet and ordered one. It'll be interesting to compare it to my NEX-7. I'll just have to get used to the 35mm focal length a bit.

considering these could be had new from $950-1k now, i think used would make sense at $700 or less, if the used price doesn't drop under that, it would be a nerving to deal with fuji quirkiness that so many of these have. imo obviously
x100 with a tilt screen would make for a much nicer walk around experience, it is too bad that nex system doesn't offer a fast 23-25mm lens at a sensible price.

A wider angle (equiv 24<28mm) would have me pick one up in a heart beat. Preferably with a tilt screen.

Where are people finding these new for less than $1000 now ??

I see Amazon, B&H, J&R, One Call, Adorama etc all still at $1199

Now I have seen some used ones cheaper, but that is probably because they are gray market ones that Fuji USA will not even touch. You could be totally SOL buying one of those.

Even buying a USA model could prove some risk in terms of warranty work, especially if its over a year old.

I got mine repaired about 2 months ago with the new lens assembly so while used, I think the buyer shouldn't have anything to worry about.

I personally would not buy a used one though unless I not know made sure it was a USA serial number, but also had a copy of the original receipt for warranty purposes, and even then only if I was a betting man.

Short of buying one from a trusted seller whom can document that its got the upgraded lens assembly, I think it seems a better bet to buy new

Especially if you can get one for $1000 new, but again, I'd make darn sure the shop selling you a new one for $1000 is indeed selling a USA model, recent serial number.

i just want decent manual focus gearing and a better evf (with peaking and a lower magnification zoom in).

if they chopped a centimeter off the top and threw out the viewfinder for a tilt screen i wouldn't complain either.

I bought a used one and it developed the sticky aperature issue. I had to fight long and hard with Fuji Canada to get them to fix the problem...in the end they did fix it for no charge, but their policy was only the original owner of the camera could get it fixed for no charge. The actual charge they wanted was about $750.

So yes, I think people who purchase the X100 used are taking a big risk. I was lucky and persistent. Others might not be so lucky and end up with a boat anchor or shelling our big cash to get it fixed.

The last new X100 I bought (I have owned three, don't ask), I paid $1058 at B&H right around the time the X-Pro1 was announced. I don't know if it's still the case, but the new price was fluctuating quite a bit there for a while.

Could be that with all the recent press about the camera sparking some new demand, everyone has it priced back at $1199 right now ??

That plus I'm not so sure the X-Pro 1 has been selling like some of the retailers thought it would. I think the expectations were very high for that camera, which helped push the X100 price down at the X-Pro1 introduction leading up to availability. When the X-Pro1 never flew off shelves , I think the X100 regained popularity. In fact, the X-Pro1 introduction has been the opposite of that of the X100. I'm not sure it was really out of stock at any of the large retailers once it was available, unlike the X100 which constantly went in and out of stock up until really a few months ago. A lot of that no doubt has to do with price, as well as Fuji perhaps under delivering on very high (probably unrealistic) pre-release expectations.

I hope the lesson they take from is that $1000-$1200 is the max most people would pay for a crop camera body.

Olympus EM-5, which is $1000 for body only, and that really needs the $300 add on grip to be functional IMHO, certainly seems to be flying off the shelves as fast as stores can stock them even in the $1300 kit format, which with grip becomes a $1600 package, and thats for a smaller 2x crop.

If the XPro had AF as fast as the m4/3 cameras, the ability to handle RF wides as well as the Ricoh M module and Sony's focus peaking I bet people would of paid $2000+

I think ultimately its not a question of the crop factor, but more so, the overall usability of the camera.

For that reason alone I won't touch a X100, used (for fear of SAB) or new (for fear of resale)
