Are these massive USB batteries pocketable too?
Its just that there really should be a separate battery charger. I don't see a way around it. I am sure that a non OEM solution will arise even if S0ny refuses to offer it as M.R. wrote.

Saw one in stock so had to pick it up. Very small camera, smaller and lighter than you would think but build quality still feels rather nice. Interface is very much like a NEX but thankfully with Alpha style menus so less soft keys and having to remember what menu icon a certain feature is under.

AF is very quick and also works well for video. surprisingly they also have focus peaking mode and the front control ring is well damped for this. Really cool to see that on a true pocket camera but with the very accurate and fast AF not sure how many will really make use of it.

IQ and broken are nothing to write home about if you compare to any other CSC's but a huge step up from other compacts. At base ISO the resolution from the 20meg sensor is pretty nice though. Reminds me of my old canon g10 except much cleaner. Could be a great landscape camera for the hiker who wants to travel light and shots mostly in good light handheld or carries a little ultrapod or something.

Video seems quite nice as well in my limited playing with it. Not gh2 good but on par with many system cameras and better than any compact. Can shoot full resolution stills while recording as well, which I can't say I've needed before but impressive it can do it.

Sadly same lame Sony bracketing mode which sucks because with the 10fps there is much potential. Shares the dro and Jpeg HDR modes of the Nexs as well.

Can't comment on the Raw files but again very cool it can shoot them and at full frame rates.

All in all not the cheapest compact but probably the best I've used. Easily worth the extra money over the x10, lx5, s100, xz1 etc and save for the s100 way more pocketable

If the raw files end up looking good I think Sony is going to have a huge hit on their hands and it's going to be a tough call to take a m4/3 or NEX camera or this on many outings, especially for those who own such systems just as alternatives to their normal dslr.

The combination of IQ and true any pocket size form factor could be brilliant for those times when you want something better than the iPhone but don't want to deal with anything you can't slip in your pocket

I've been looking for a new easy to carry camera to replace my perished Canon 40D. I had eyed Olympus E-M5 and Panasonic GH2 for some time but now that I saw this little marvel, I suspect I've made my mind. It's no DSLR but damn! Really promising. I have to get hold one of these and see if this might be my dream all-around-camera, as it fits in my pocket (and is easy to always have around), has great IQ and good video capabilities (that that I've been looking for also). My only wish is it had NEX-5n accessory slot for microphone and EVF. Then I would have bought it the second I saw it!

I guess low light and tele would slow it, right? If so, to what extent?

Happy shooting,
Yakim.

My RX100 showed yesterday - I got to play with it today - just a little. Yes - very small, well made, fits in shirt pocket - can take great photos. The photos have that "Zeiss" look for sure. Love the colors and detail. More later when I learn how to use it!

Second photo I took - the colors look right to me - no pp.

Take a look at the images from the Korean review site linked earlier. They shot a fair amount at the long end in low light and it seemed to manage OK. Better than I would have expected.

I haven't noticed any AF issues on the tele end or in lower light but like any camera, I'm sure it's not as quick. Haven't had any issues with hunting for several seconds or any so called deal breakers like that. Just overall good snappy AF

For my uses id probably be shooting wide open and at the wider end when it's low light anyways though, more of a street or atmospheric style than wanting to shoot tighter stuff with this type of camera.

Sometimes when traveling its nice to have a bit of zoom though just for more distant landscapes, sunset silhouettes etc so while it is a slow zoom on the tele side, its nice it's there

Just thinking it would be nice to see Ricoh put this sensor in a new GRD...

I was asking about AF, not about IQ (which I know is excellent).

Happy shooting,
Yakim.

It's very important for me because I think about buying it for my wife (she does not know yet...). For her, low light AF and overall responsiveness of the camera are key factors.

Happy shooting,
Yakim.

Its very responsive, handles very much like the NEX in terms of interface. I'm not having any issues with low light AF and the camera always seems ready to shoot, with no delays writing to the card or anything like that.

Only thing that can cause a few seconds pause is when you do things like the stacked exposures for twillight mode, or some of the creative styles like the HDR Painting mode etc, again just like the NEX's

Other than having menu's a bit more like an Alpha series camera, the overall handing, responsiveness, AF, peaking mode, in camera processing options, sweep pano's etc are all just like shooting with a NEX5n.

Sadly IQ doesn't match the 5n (who would expect it to) but then again it fits into even a shirt pocket, which the NEX with 18-55 never could do.

As long as one views this as what it is, a P&S style camera I don't think any user could be disappointed with it.

@millsart: I don't know if I should be thanking or cursing you for your helpful comments on the RX100. I really don't think I need this camera right now!

I wondered if you had any impression on the optical quality so far. Noticing any particularly obvious issues (bad fringing/LongCA in high contrast at wide angle, soft corners at a particular focal length, etc.)?

It sounds like the sensor is excellent for its size. I know from the LX3 you can make a really nice compact lens, just wondering how this one is doing along with the demands of a 20MP sensor.

Thanks!

Ken

Yes, and any comments on the lens? How's edge to edge sharpness?

Well, the JPEG aren't bad in any way, typical Sony style really, but they do show a bit of heavy handed NR, which you can only set to low, not off. Also from what I've been seeing, there is a fair bit of software lens correction, so it will be interesting to see what really is possible with LR4 when its supported.

On the whole though the IQ seems quite acceptable. If it was just a couple of years ago this clean of files with 20megs resolution would be phenomenal. As it currently stands though, no, its not in the same class as the OM-D, NEX5n, any APS-C DSLR, XPro etc.

Its about on par with some older m4/3 cameras like the EP3 though I'd say, with a bit more resolution, though of course m4/3 can have some great lens mounted, like the 25mm f1.4 so its hard to do an apples to apples comparison. I will say though that this really is a big step up from any point and shoot, even a 2/3 sensored X10.

Frankly for me, being able to take some shots at say, ISO800, which are reasonably clean, and also at 28mm equiv f1.8 having a little bit of background separation coming from a camera that slips into any pocket is just amazing.

Again, no, its not any sort of bokeh machine, and a DSLR with kit zoom can surpass it, so if anyone thinks they are going to get shots like a EM-5 with a 20mm f1.7 they will be disappointed, but if you've used any other compact and didn't like the typical compact look, this is a great upgrade.

Its basically giving low end CSC w/ kit zoom IQ from a true pocket camera.

Add to that 1080 60p video, manual focus with peaking, stepless aperture control for video, and even live HDMI monitor out make this quite an impressive little video camera.

No EVF support either of course is a shame, but the white magic LCD really does work great. I can shoot in midday sun either right into the sun or with the sun over my shoulder onto the screen and still compose just fine. Even works with my polarized glasses.

The metal body with the rounded ends even reminds me of a Leica a little bit lol. Surprisingly its not slippery to hold either. Has a good thumb grip with a much more recessed video button than the NEX7.

Just all and all about the most powerful "real" camera that you can actually carry in your shirt pocket sums it up

Another review with a pretty nice assortment of images

http://www.f64.ro/blog/2012/07/16/hai-hui-prin-dobrogea-cu-sony-rx100/

No clue what it says, probably same stuff as the other reviews around the web, but nice assortment of images with a bit more variety than most reviews

One other cool and good bit of fun I discovered with the RX100 tonight is that I can sync it at 1/2000th of a second using its built in flash to trigger one of my cheapie full manual Yongnuo speedlights using the built in optical slave.

One of my favorite shots with my Fuji X100 was to overpower the sun using just a handheld speedlight and happily the RX100 can do the same.

Certainly don't have to limit it to just full power blast either, can just stick a speedlight pointing to the ceiling and have great room filling bounced fill flash for a party etc
