@millsart: I don't know if I should be thanking or cursing you for your helpful comments on the RX100. I really don't think I need this camera right now!
I wondered if you had any impression on the optical quality so far. Noticing any particularly obvious issues (bad fringing/LongCA in high contrast at wide angle, soft corners at a particular focal length, etc.)?
It sounds like the sensor is excellent for its size. I know from the LX3 you can make a really nice compact lens, just wondering how this one is doing along with the demands of a 20MP sensor.
Thanks!

Well, the JPEG aren't bad in any way, typical Sony style really, but they do show a bit of heavy handed NR, which you can only set to low, not off. Also from what I've been seeing, there is a fair bit of software lens correction, so it will be interesting to see what really is possible with LR4 when its supported.
On the whole though the IQ seems quite acceptable. If it was just a couple of years ago this clean of files with 20megs resolution would be phenomenal. As it currently stands though, no, its not in the same class as the OM-D, NEX5n, any APS-C DSLR, XPro etc.
Its about on par with some older m4/3 cameras like the EP3 though I'd say, with a bit more resolution, though of course m4/3 can have some great lens mounted, like the 25mm f1.4 so its hard to do an apples to apples comparison. I will say though that this really is a big step up from any point and shoot, even a 2/3 sensored X10.
Frankly for me, being able to take some shots at say, ISO800, which are reasonably clean, and also at 28mm equiv f1.8 having a little bit of background separation coming from a camera that slips into any pocket is just amazing.
Again, no, its not any sort of bokeh machine, and a DSLR with kit zoom can surpass it, so if anyone thinks they are going to get shots like a EM-5 with a 20mm f1.7 they will be disappointed, but if you've used any other compact and didn't like the typical compact look, this is a great upgrade.
Its basically giving low end CSC w/ kit zoom IQ from a true pocket camera.
Add to that 1080 60p video, manual focus with peaking, stepless aperture control for video, and even live HDMI monitor out make this quite an impressive little video camera.
No EVF support either of course is a shame, but the white magic LCD really does work great. I can shoot in midday sun either right into the sun or with the sun over my shoulder onto the screen and still compose just fine. Even works with my polarized glasses.
The metal body with the rounded ends even reminds me of a Leica a little bit lol. Surprisingly its not slippery to hold either. Has a good thumb grip with a much more recessed video button than the NEX7.
Just all and all about the most powerful "real" camera that you can actually carry in your shirt pocket sums it up
