I'm glad you survived and documented the encounter. Gear can be replaced. I would have been shaking so bad that everything would have been a blur.

The bear I met this weekend in Sequoia NP was too small to attack a big telephoto,
so he went after my small Leica M lenses

Stupid bear - you can't operate a camera without opposable thumbs!

So glad that you are ok though! But I can't bear the thought of your gear being bruined.

So from reading on lensrentals.com blog, I see that all this gear (maybe not the tripod) was rented from Roger?? Roger's account of Andrew's account of the damage is a little different than Andrew's is in the original story. From the blog I quote:

"In a testament to the durability of the new D4, in Andrew’s words “The D4 functions properly, but the lensmount is bent and the images are backfocused severely”. In a testament to the wisdom of having the damage waiver, replacement equipment is already on it’s way to Andrew. If he gets shots like these with his backup equipment in a situation where I would simply be concentrating on not soiling myself, I can’t wait to see the shots he gets with the D4 and 600 VR in more stable conditions."

So I'm just trying to figure out why two such different accounts of the same incident. Good to see Roger already sent out replacement gear to Andrew but I thought Andrew had said the gear was working fine in the posts on the first few pages of this thread. Now we hear through Roger that the lens mount is broken and the camera is back focusing severely??

Great story and good example of why I don't go into the woods alone in Yellowstone.

I don't mean to speak for Andrew, but if I understand correctly he cleaned the gear up and was thrilled that it was all working, but then went back out to take pictures and found the body backfocusing and emailed us. The lens apparently is fine, though.

this is a really funny version of bear vs man, the venerable John West Salmon commercial

-------

there was a story about a year ago in which a black macaque actually took some in focus self portraits

the grizzly just needs some practice

I wondered if you had eaten a granola bar or some other food items with your fingers and transferred the smell to the knobs and tripod legs. No matter. Great story and glad you retreated to a safe distance.

That's an expensive bait, have you tried it with a D3?

The Stench of the D4 was too much for the bear, sorry he had to put it down, luckily you were smart enough to set down the gear, Think I would have done something really stupid like stick around.

Great photos and a fascinating story!

I was just wondering what really happened to the gear. One can read at Lensrentals.com ”in Andrew’s words ’The D4 functions properly, but the lensmount is bent and the images are backfocused severely’”. And Andrew’s blog says ”I took some test shots with the camera and lens and everything is still in perfect focus and calibration.” Did I miss something?

Was the gear really damaged or not?

You are correct. The gear was rental stuff. And I did not realize until just the other day that the lens mount was bent. Huge thanks to LensRentals though, A replacement D4 and Wimberly head showed up today!

Glad to hear your D4 made it out fine! I wouldn't be very worried about the D4 taking a little tumble in the jungle tho, have you seen the Digital Rev video where Kai hits a 7D with a bus multiple times, pushes it down stairs, steps on it, submerges it with water, freezes it, thaws it, and sets fire to it? The 7D still worked after all that.
