I guess I missed being first on the puns by a post, but I was going to say put it up on ebay: "Bearly used Nikon D4." Everyone will think it's a misspelling and bid as if it were new!
Yeah man, I agree with my brothers; you need to sell this story to Nikon!!! You were also bright enough to realize that no amount of camera is worth your life. Keep shooting!!! Just watch out for a bear with a chipped tooth, haha

You should have put the gear down on the ground. Great story. I'm glad you made it safely!
I've had several close encounters with black bears, which rarely attack humans, and even knowing that I can tell you that the flight or flight response takes over and the last thing you think about is protecting your gear. Another example of instinct being more intelligent than cognition.
Good call on leaving the gear behind. The height of it was an afront to him (always crouch down with a bear -- standing is a challenge!), so he attacked it, and let you go. Nikon should license your photos and stories for promotional materials showing off the robustness of their equipment. The tripod manufacturer... not so much. I'd take your stuff to Nikon service to have it cleaned just in case something sifted in. Take pictures and story, and they'll love you for it and do it for free, I think!
