p.1 #1 · How to protect gear when crossing creeks.

Hello,

We are hiking the Subway at Zion. I would like to bring my 5D + 1-2 lenses.
What would you recommend to protect this gear. We may need to wade through knee high creeks.

Thanks,

Mike

put your gear into a drybag, and if you really love your gear put the drybag into a watershed bag. don't trust pelican cases. NRS sells lots of different bags but this double bagging when done properly (rolling up the bags and sealing the seams together on the watershed) should provide minimum anxiety up to class 4+.

I use this, and it's completely waterproof: Ortlieb

Pelican or Storm case could also work.

Drybag should be fine. Its not "the best" thing out there, but they are easier to hike with than a rigid case.

I've honestly just put gear into the heavy freezer style ziplock bags before when I've been out hiking/boating. After all its really just for protection in case you slip on some rocks and your bag falls into the water.

I wish someone would make a good fully waterproof large sensor compact. Like a Fuji X10 or Canon G-X with 10-20m full water proofing like a TX20.

If you want a TRULY waterproof carry , Peliboxes or Watershed are the only ones that will handle extended submersion. I got my kayak stuffed under a log creek boating . The cockpit was underwater facing upstream with the watershed bag behind the seat. It took us about 70 minutes to get the boat un pinned and everything that was in standard drybags were wet. The watershed was bone dry on the inside. You might not NEED that level of waterproofness, but it came in handy.

Not falling. Seriously, that's it! Don't bring a bunch of junk that's going to weigh you down, make you look like a wuss, and/or otherwise mess up your experience with the great and rugged outdoors! Maybe just a plastic grocery bag and yeah: Don't be a klutz and fall in.

I use a simms drybag that rolls up the long way for stream crossings where I don't plan on getting wet. I trout fish quite a bit, armed with rods and cameras. This bag comes in handy for rain, snow, and setting your gear down on damp or soaked ground. If I am out in my kayak, I use a Pelican case. (but used to use a roll up dry bag for that also, a really good one)

Bifucator - Not falling is my plan as well, but if you spend enough time clucking around in rivers, some day(s) you will get wet. If you have never crossed a river in a particular spot, one tends to underestimate the depth and current. There are some crossings I will do with a regular pack, but if I have 5K$ in camera gear in it, I might use a wading staff (ski pole, big stick, anything) for a bit of insurance.

Sure, if you're doing that a lot - then gear up for it. Here we're talking about a few days back-packing and a few very minor stream crossings.

Your walking-stick, cheap-o mono-pod idea is a good one!

I recently ordered a few of these just for that. And I guess there's even cheaper ones if you don't need the small collapsibility:

What difference does it make if it is a few days or a lot. One slip and your gear could be toast. Very least put all the equipment into sealable freezer bags...maybe even double bag it. Some streams have very slippery algae on the rocks...even the mocho Bifurcator could easily slip in these conditions.

For "knee high creeks" I'd use ziplock bags.

If you are feeling particularly clumsy, any dry bag will do. It's not like you're going whitewater kayaking.

If you are feeling particularly clumsy AND want to shoot while standing in water, get something like an Ewa-Marine bag (or a knock-off). They are not expensive and while they aren't good for diving, they're perfectly good for splashy places.

You realize you could say the same thing about standing in your livingroom or carrying your camera on a stair case right? So what's next, protective impact enclosures for everything - including ourselves?

I guess he's going on mid to light trek in Arizona and not navigating the rapids or something... No?

Oh... Nevermind...

That doesn't really look like a "knee-high creek" though:

+1. I learned the difference between a dry bag and a hard case after I fell into the stream..
