p.1 #1 · SF / Bay Area ALT Meetup

Hi all.

There are quite a few of us in and around the SF / BA here in the forum. I have had past conversations with a few people about a future meet up and the general idea seems to be well received, so nobody has taken the initiative so far... I'll take a stab at spearheading this and, if there is interest, maybe we can figure something out.

When: TBD - how about the weekend of June 9th, or 16th ?
Where: TBD - let's come up with some ideas (see below)
Who: Any members of the forum shooting with alt cameras, lenses, or both.
Why: To meet some of your virtual ALT forum friends in the real world, take some photos, drool over some gear, and generally have a blast.

Ideas? My suggestion is we find out who is interested (respond to this thread), and what you're interested in shooting ("anything" will not really be helpful ). We can probably agree on a common theme/location.

So what do we think?

it is probably to inaccessable and far away though.

I'll be in the Santa Cruz area on August 11th (my niece's wedding is in Seacliff on the 10th) if anyone wants to come down and hang out in the coastal towns. I'm thinking the people shooting opportunities should be great, if nothing else.

I'm interested in the week of the 16th. I would be willing to go to SF, or anywhere in between Santa Cruz(where I live), and SF.
Hey freaklikeme...I'm going to bet your niece's wedding is at the Seascape Resort??!! I actually deliver UPS in that whole area(sorry, I have to have a real job!!)!! Feel free to pm me for any info you might need before coming into town. Is she a local here in Aptos??

Hey, Gregg... no idea. "On the beach" is all I've been told. She's a Colorado native but her fiancé is from the area (and soon they will both be Sacromentonians). Thanks for the offer. My company (I have a real job, too) is based in San Jose, so every time I'm forced to go to corporate, I try to make it out at least to the boardwalk, but I don't know much about the rest of the area so I probably will hit you up for some tips.

Good to see a little interest, I hope, and I have a feeling we'll see more.

Derek, Mothball is of high interest to me, but other than a covert ninja mission, I think it's beyond the scope of this project Speaking of covert missions, I guess you have seen this? If you have any other thoughts on SF and/or greater-area locations, please feel free to list a few.

Freak, pending how this one goes, maybe we can put together another for later in the summer, either way hopefully you'll find someone to hang with.

Gregg,
Do you have any suggestions in the Santa Cruz area or other Bay Area locations?

Here are a few thoughts from me:
Since I'm not a BA resident, my knowledge is limited. Maybe those who are residents or more familiar can fine tune this a bit...

Street Photo: In SF on Market, Haight, the Wharf, or GG Park.
General Alt~ish: GG Park, Conservatory of Flowers, Japanese Garden
Landscape: Marin Headlands, Pt. Reyes, Tomales Bay, Inverness, McClures Beach
Urban Exploration: Mare Island (this doesn't have to include entry to any buildings), Alcatraz, Presidio

i did see that, i've been thinking of taking my kayak over to try and get some (legal) exterior photos some time.

don't have a whole lot to contribute regarding other locations, i've only lived here for 9 months. i would think the mission would actually be the best place to go for street photography, though all of SF is pretty good for that. if the meeting is a sunny morning i'd be happy to show people where i go to shoot light rays in the cypresses (land's end).

I'm tentatively in since my wife's due date is June 30. It's our first, so things are a little crazy right now. I'll try not to overload the forum with baby pictures.

I'm interested too. Just don't know my schedule yet that far out.
I'm up for shooting the rays in the fog at Lands End.

there are two big caveats for that – it has to be sunny (in SF ) and you need to be there pretty early in morning to get the sun at a low angle.

Well, no problem for me getting up there early in the morning, but we would need to see about the weather.

Hmm, I'm actually on the East Coast, but if this meetup happens somewhere between 6/19-6/24, I'll be in the Bay Area and would love to do this...

last june it was actually sunny pretty often there, but people tell me that was unusual. if that doesn't work out for this meetup, i could always meet up with you there some other time.

How about a several stop shoot? Lands End, Fort Point, Marin Headlands vista points of GG Bridge and Pt. Bonita Lighthouse? Or some subset thereof.

My other suggestion would be some set of Santa Cruz locations: UCSC Arboretum, Fallen Arches, West Side Dr., Lighthouse, Boardwalk, the Marina, Capitola.

Or, perhaps Fall Creek. The prettiest creek hike (IMHO) in the Bay Area: http://www.parks.ca.gov/?page_id=25157

something like that makes sense to me as long as transportation works out for everybody. land's end doesn't have that much variety to offer as a single destination, but i could spend days at marin headlands.

For what it's worth, I am more than willing to provide carpool service, that way we can go to the various destinations without a mad scramble for parking. I can seat a total of 5 in my car.

Good input from everyone, let's keep the conversation going.

Multiple locations is a great idea, I would suggest we limit it to 3 or 4 stops at most though. Otherwise there is going to be quite a bit of driving, and we'll want to take a lunch break (yes?).

LOCATIONS
- A Fall Creek hike sounds interesting, I have never hiked it... always looking for new hikes. It appears very photogenic too.

- For a multi-location jaunt, I'd vote for the Santa Cruz area (as long as we have someone familiar along), just because I haven't explored it very much. Getting around can (or "may") be a little easier over there than around the city too.

- Marin Headlands is a nice area, I'm curious though, what do most of you shoot while there? The bridge & city, or landscapes of the Headlands themselves? I have hiked miles and miles of it, but have not taken a ton of photos out there.

- Point Reyes is a beautiful place, I have hiked and camped all over it. The points of interest tend to take some hiking to get to (IMO). If we wanted to go that way, I might suggest something like: Abbots Lagoon (the green grassy hills out that way are beautiful right now too), Mc Clures Beach, Tomales Point, optional stop before or after in Inverness to shoot the boat houses and shops along the bay... I have always wanted to photograph that "Launch For Hire" at low tide

These are just my thoughts, we should probably gather a vote.

For any outdoor-landscape locales, we probably want to be there either first or last, right? Mid day light and all... For street/casual stuff I really don't mind how the light is. Indoor things less important in that regard.

Car pools def a good idea, we can compensate the driver/s of course. I have a truck... bad for city driving, ok-ish for Santa Cruz, fine for Pt. Reyes, good if we need to get out into the middle of no-where
