p.3 #1 · Need opinions on Contax Zeiss 25/2.8 and 28/2

And I’ll add that you can’t turn the hood the wrong way.

I played again with the hood last night and found that it worked better or worse depending on where I held the hood. Apparently there is some bowing or deflection that hinders the hood rotation. I think I’ll try to clean the “threads” by using some fabric thread. As I said, with wear, it seems to be improving so the tolerance is only off by a small bit. It also goes on better as I continue to work it back and forth. I should try the second hood again and see how the action compares.

I have both the ZF 28/2 and the ZF2 25/2. I'm shooting Velvia & Sensia transparencies with them.

The 28/2 is beautiful on film. Very 3D. It's taken me more than a few rolls of film to come to terms with the 25/2. It doesn't have as much 3D pop as the 28/2. It seems to be more organic and resolves more. Still it yields a very sharp and richly colored image (re: Velvia, Sensia). Since I am normally shooting at f/5.6 -11, I like to set the focus on infinity and let the depth of field fall where it will.

I'd suggest send the whole thing back and get another replacement... but wait it's 2.8/21 milvus? there's probably something wrong with your copy.

Zeiss is a perfection freak company... like I said there's no way for them to let this out.

I got the 25mm at work today. I didn't really have time to shoot, but I stopped by a local abandoned brewery today and found the fence buttoned up, so I didn't have access to the shot I wanted. Here's a couple I shot, and had to run home for a ping pong tournament (haven't played in years).

Okay here's my sampler.

Carl Zeiss 2/25 ZE at f/2.0

I noticed near the focused plane you'll get nervous boke but after maybe a foot or two bokeh is smooth.

By the way all of you who are visiting New York City for holidays or just shopping for cameras in BH... I'd recommend stop by BRYANT PARK have some beers there.... they setup a nice bar that resembles european style eatery with bar in the middle. then you have the Christmas markets outside.

If you [ in front of the ice rink ] are facing 5th ave and your back is 6th ave. The bar is sitting on the left side corner of the rink next to the Christmas Tree.

you have one Bar in the middle surrounded with food vendors, the bar is indoor. enjoy.

the beer below is the favorite Brooklyn lager...

BTW, the hood fits perfect.

It was a difficult day for shooting. I missed the frost on the trees (couldn't stop along the freeway). The light was very flat, and snow was a difficult subject, but fortunately, the temp was 20F or so with a 10 mph wind.

First one is through a hospital window, and gives feel for the day.

It's a little early to wander around on the ice, but it seemed solid. The depth is probably over 30 foot deep, so no problem if you know how to swim. I don't see any CA at 100%.

This one is near the minimum focus distance.

Near infinity focus.

The deer were checking me out while I shot this one.

So far I'm happy with how it shoots and the initial impressions from the few photos I've shot.
