You could also design a curved sensor adjustment for COF and poor edge/corner performance / vignetting would be a thing of the past, enabling much simpler lens designs.
Maybe my great, great, great, great grandkids will see it happen.
There would still be some vigentting but it would be reduced. Due to the likely exclusivity and unfamiliarity of designing for curved sensors the lenses would probably be more expensive, despite requiring simpler designs.

I'm going to take a bit of liberty with the OP subject and note my one feature that keeps me with the Sony A77 - the rear LCD.
I can't really argue lenses, because I don't use any of the AF Zeiss lenses and Sony's A-mount lineup is pretty crappy.
The EVF is a win-some, lose-some scenario that's mostly positive, but certainly doesn't keep me tied to the system.
Sony's IBIS is *meh* only - They really, really could use an option to see IBIS effects in the VF or something for longer lenses - shooting even 300mm on the A77 can be a royal PITA without optical stabilization (hell, an electronic versions of IBIS like they do with video would be great!)
But that rear LCD is amazing - So, so so so so useful for tripod shooting, or low-angle or high-angle shooting, or candid moments (holding camera like WLVF).
The fact the AF is just as good using LCD as EVF is icing on the cake.
If Sony's upcoming A99 (or whatever their new FF is) has the same type of LCD, I'm in the Sony camp for good unless the camera totally bombs.
If not, I'm moving back to Canon 5Dc. The 70-200 II is a siren who's call is extremely hard to resist.
In fact, I constantly resist the urge to put up the A77 setup for massive losses just to move back to my 5Dc, 70-200 II and Tamron 28-75 setup. So there's my answer to the OP, the Canon 70-200 II.

'I think a two-touch 28-85 f/4 with fantastic sharpness across the frame, superb micro-contrast, and Zeiss colors (that is to say color separation), would sell pretty well.'
Zeiss is a smart outfit, but not quite that smart, just yet anyway - great idea though.
I am in Sony with remounted and converted Contax lenses, the only 'platform' I would move to is Nikon for the D800, but these lenses can't fit the F mount as far as I know. I could not use APS-C or NEX due to my dependence on the Contax 21mm, to answer your question.
I hope for and expect the technical performance of Sony's 24Mp APS-C sensor scaled up to full frame soon, with at least the goods of the A77; with my work 50/50 tripod/handheld, I can live with a well implemented EVF/LCD for the focus aids alone.

for what it's worth, many c/y lenses can be leitaxed to nikon f-mount, i'm not sure about all your specific lenses though if the conversion works for sony it usually works for nikon.

At this point in time, only a FF mirrorless could get me to branch out, and it's AF would have to be better than my 1DIII and have a lens lineup better than my L's for me to jump ship.

No one lens occasioning itself, would provoke me to change platforms. I'm intersted in how a system performs, and what is/might be available within that system.
I will say that obviously we all know the an EF body is crazy-adaptable for a good many other systems' lenses and for that, I am a very happy EF mount user.
Then, in creeps the M stuff for systems with short registration distance...

A colleague of mine vent Nikon D300 for the 200-400/4. I, coming from a Canon AE-1, scanning both Nikon and Canon line of BIF lenses, chose Canon for the 300/4LIS and 400/5.6L of the same reason: "best" lens for BIF. Great choice, because thanks to this money saving forum I have tried a bunch of really cheap Contax Lenses, through them found Zeiss, and am now on Zeiss even for BIF with the Contax N 400/4 Tele Apotessar. THIS lens alone will make me stay Canon, and I might have changed to Canon if I had chosen the dark side from start just to get the, for me, very desirable BIF IQ of the mighty TAT.

Contax N 85 on Canon, for taking portraits of my family. Excellent subject isolaton and colours. Value of 5D2, falling like a rock. Value of the lens, fattening Conurus' wallet. Value of lovely family portraits - priceless. :-)

14-24 Nikkor convinced me I needed a D700. The 70-200 f4 IS keeps me in the Canon camp also.

My Minolta Rokkor 58mm f/1.2 and 400mm f/5.6 APO have kept me from changing to Nikon for now, but I have thought long and hard about getting a Nikon D800 and I still might.

Many superb lenses from Contax,Zeiss Z,Minolta MD,Nikon,Oly Zuiko,Sigma,Tamron and Tokina convinced me that mirrorless camera is the way to go becauese this will not limit my lens set to just one or two systems.

+1. Imagine Sony secretly helps Conurus developing the SLT adapter for Canikon lens, the world would be much simpler for a photographer.

Canon's TSE series' ability to rotate tilt and shift independently makes me wish F mount could adapt to EF mount as I seem to never agree with Canon SLR ergonomics.
