It is one of those OpTech connector/eyelets. I like them and use them for my BlackRapid straps. They don't get in the way when the strap is not in use. Plus, they're inexepensive.
So are you using this with any heavier lenses like 100-400 or 70-200f/2.8 attached. I would like a different way to attach my RS7 other than screwing into my lens foot on the 100-400 but the good thing is by attaching to the foot it holds the lens at a horizontal position and doesn't over stress the lens mount. I worry that having it attached to that OpTech would have it hanging at an angle and keep the lens weight always pulling at the mount?? Otherwise maybe I'll get this just form my 5D2 that I use only for landscapes and macro and never have my 100-400 attached to anyways.

Has anyone heard any updates on when the Rev.A plates and L-Brackets will start shipping?
I looked closely at my 40D L-Bracket the other day on a shoot and it it nicely curved like the Kirk plate above posted by 'blschaefer1' - I hope RRS does the same for the new 5D3 plates rather than the triangular shim they installed on Rev.0.
After four years, the 40D with the L-Bracket has no marks on it. I wouldn't want my Mark.III to inadvertently become a Mark.IV
No update yet, they did let me keep the Rev.0 till mine arrives so I'm happy. The L-plate actually fits fairly well, nothing like the pictures of the normal plate. I don't think even the Rev.0 L-plate would scratch the camera but it does have that angled edge instead of a rounded one so hopefully Rev.A will be rounded.
^^ that's funny. they originally said a week or two, it already seems like a month has passed. I think I may cancel my order in favor of the Kirk. The RRS is much longer than it needs to be and quite frankly looks like something you would find on ebay. It just doesn't have that svelte well styled functional design that RRS products normally have.

I'd use the standard BR attachement on the foot if it were me. I don't think it would balance right on the body with a heavy lens and the op-tech connector.
I still keep my order at RRS and I also talked to Jim yesterday, as well. He said within 2-3 weeks, indeed but chances are it would be delivered sooner. So, yes, I am waiting for that order to be filled.
In the meantime, I bought a universal plate with strap eyelet from Multi Media. I figured with the fast development of camera models, it won't hurt to get a universal one to be used in the interim. I got it yesterday and it is very well made and it works as it should. I can use the handstrap and the extra opening with thread enables me to screw the ConnectR of my R-Strap.Their rubber contact strip prevents any indentation to the body and the plate doesn't rotate at all. It may say universal but it functions just as well as the one customfitted for the camera for half the price and free shipping. Gene, thank you for recommending Multi Media.

My RRS L-plate shipped this evening. That is my new Rev A one. Just a heads up.
Nice - I am in Canada too but I am further down the list than you as I ordered on Mar 27th. I have not heard from them as of yet.
Let me know when you get it, I am interested in knowing how long it takes to get to Canada.
I can tell you that my original Lplate shipped april6 and arrived April 16. I used the lowest USPS/CanadaPost shipping method. As long as customs doesn't hold it too long, ten days is usually what I see from RRS even though their estimate is 2-3 weeks.
Yup, that's the one, Gene. It works great at half the price. Well, without tax and shipping, actually, it is more than half for us . I would be just as content using it permanently on my 5D Mark III. Come to think of it, maybe I should change my order with RRS to an L-bracket....

I must admit, I like the modular approach to ProMedia Gear plates. You want just the landscape plate for the day, merely un-bolt the portrait side of the plate. I wonder how solid that would be though...
Joshua, I think I will do exactly that. Good suggestion, PMG products have served me well. BTW, did you get a look at the pricing on L brackets? I'd like to see one.
For $30 it is worth trying out while I wait on my grip. I have a Wimberley universial plate that has worked great on a gripped camera but it doesn't have the strap loop for non-gripped cameras.
Gene, I couldn't see the actual design of the L-bracket from PMG. Somehow, they are not showing any good pictures of their L-bracket there. I am sure function-wise, the L-brackets in the market are roughly the same. I have used RRS and Kirk products and in general, I prefer the appearance of the RRS L-brackets. RRS charges slightly more and they charge for shipping, too. I will give RRS a call on Monday and if their answer is not to my liking, like the shipment will be delayed, or something to that effect, I will just cancel my order and ask for a refund.
Jim, for $30 you cannot go wrong with that plate. The screws that hold the strap loop act as stop pins to prevent accidental sliding in your tripod clamp. You can mount the screws in reverse if you don't like having a little bit of a protrusion under your plate. They supplied 3 allen wrenches with the plate. BTW, I ended up removing one of the rubber strips and again, the plate mounted without any rotation during the procedure.
Joshua, they show the 5D3 L bracket as being available in April. No, they don't show a good picture of it. I may call them next week and find out more. I did order the universal plate and did cancel the RRS plate via email. There is too much of a price gap to ignore based on your current experience and my previous experience with their products.
Just received the Rev A of the B5D3 plate... unfortunately, doesn't look like too much have changed... I still feel like that shelf corner is touching the camera body except it's lower profile now... Why couldn't RRS just have removed the shelf entirely? Anyone else still a little disappointed?

How does it fit on the camera? Can't say if I'd be disappointed if I haven't even tested it. I think there has to be SOME ridge so that it compensates for the slightly raised rubber strips on the camera body. I think they just made it too big on the first version.

It fits a lot better than before. When shining a light through the gaps to see if it's like before, it's harder to tell because now it sits a little more flush but I think the body is still slightly resting on that corner shelf. I don't know why it isn't made so that the base is flat and then you have the anti-twist ledge. Not too sure the purpose of that shelf in the middle. Putting the camera on a flat level surface doesn't cause the built-in level to be spot on. It's off by just a tad. Don't know if this is due to that shelf again.
