I notice where it has already marked the camera. That anti spin ledge in back should be radiused IMO. It takes considerable pressure to break through that anodized finish. The fact that it only touches on one side is a sure sign of a poor fit.

Agreed. It looks slightly specular in that spot along the bottom of the camera for sure.

In the meantime, I bought a universal plate with strap eyelet from Multi Media. I figured with the fast development of camera models, it won't hurt to get a universal one to be used in the interim.

Can you please provide a link for this?

I spoke today with "Jim" at RRS in regards to my order for the L Plate for the 5D MK III and he told me it will ship today, I did get a tracking number for it. I inquired about the "fit" issue with the "A" revision L Plate and he said he guaranteed a perfect fit. I should know tomorrow, Friday at the latest. My fingers are crossed!

When did yours ship Mine shipped on April 27, but the last tracking update is that it was processd through the Los Angelas sort facility on April 27th.

I'm leaving for Moab on May 11, so am hoping it will arrive no later then April 10.

Mine shipped 27 th also. Had the LA scan on 28th then Vancouver customs on 1st and cleared customs on the 2nd. Now shows that it arrived in Whitehorse last night. Odd that yours isn't showing anything more. Is yours with USPS/Canada post or is it with UPS.

Thanks for the update. Mine shipped via USPS. The original L bracket took around 2 weeks to arrive, but the tracking info was more up to date then this time around. Mine is still only showing that it cleared at the LA scan on Oct 27.

Just got an update email from RRS regarding why the 'step' was made instead of a curved flange:

Greetings Andy,

I apologize for the delay in response – I wanted to make sure I had the most information possible before getting back to you.

We understand that there is still a concern about the chosen design of the plate for the Canon 5D Mark III body, especially regarding the use of the “step” which has been referred to throughout this thread and why we deviated from the “curved flange” design along the back of the plate. Official Response from Really Right Stuff, LLC.

We understand that there is still a concern about the chosen design of the plate for the Canon 5D Mark III body, especially regarding the use of the “step” which has been referred to throughout this thread and why we deviated from the “curved flange” design along the back of the plate. We decided to use the rubber gasket for enhancing anti-twist. However, the gasket's irregular shape would cause the plate to tilt when tightened down. The best way which ensured that every camera body would align accurately was to set up a series of contact surfaces that would guide the body into level orientation. For the compound curves of the Canon 5D Mark III, we can get a more consistent result from utilizing flat contact planes than we can by machining a curve into the plate, especially when taking machining variances and tolerances of the different manufacturers into account.

Some people are concerned that the “step” will cause additional marring on the body of the camera. The changes made in Rev. A include a small, barely noticeable edge break that was added to this step. It has made a world of difference in minimizing possible marring. Any plate, regardless of manufacturer, may leave some signs of wear at each place where it contacts the camera.

The gaps between the flange and body are the result of our engineers removing excess material after deciding that a taller flange in the back offered superior anti-twist. Leaving material there would not increase support or function in any way and is a matter if cosmetics. Most of our customers like and are happy with the looks of the plate. If you are not satisfied with your plate, we stand by our Return Policy.

Did you only need to elongate the bolt hole?

***EDIT***
Whoops you just posted a newer pic that explains it.

Nice work!

I think most people are a little to anxious or afraid to think about modifying things a little bit... most of the times the mods needed are very minor, and very often even backward compatible...

I notice the 5D plate is a B5D-L B - does that mean it got two revisions?

For the modification of a RRS 5D L plate shown above to allow it to go on a 5D III, does the modified plate allow use of a Canon remote release while the camera is mounted in a clamp for portrait orientation? There are potential issues related to the location of the opening in the plate for the release connector, and also the distance the side leg of the plate is able to be located away from the camera in order for the cable and connector to clear an Arca Swiss clamp. Using a remote release is very important to many, so knowing what works would be very helpful.

For the RRS L plate for the 5D, one of the revisions as I remember was to add the place to attach a strap to the right side of the plate. Not sure if there was some other change that occured that may have made the revsion go to B.
