Has anyone with the 5D 3 figured out if there is a way to remap the magnify so it uses the buttons to zoom in/out? I liked the way the old 5D, 5D2, and 7D magnifies images. Using my left hand to hit the button magnify button on the 5D3 drives me nuts. The old way, I could just hit the the zoom in button quickly for review.
There is a custom map option but that doesn't seem to work for this.
haha Just got mine today and have been saying the same thing--after a while of shooting with it I've gotten a better handle, but it'll be a pain in the ass using it alongside my 1DIII if I don't get it remapped.
At first I was always messing up the zoom on the 5D3. But now after a couple weeks, I am now messing up on my 5D2 which I shoot alongside my 5D3!. I think I actually prefer the new 5D3 way and I really like how I set it to go to 100% pixel view with one push of the button to quickly check focus. I can also understand why people don't like the new way but for me it is working.
You can remap the magnify function to the Set button, and specify how much magnification you want. From there, zoom in or out with the main dial. I've got mine set up so that when I push the Set button, it zooms in to 100% at the focus point.
Definitely agreed at first blush. I am not a fan. I'm open to the idea it might grow on me, but mostly I'm hoping they do a firmware update that includes the old-style.
I'd love to see a bit of peaking or sharpening in the display image in both live-view and playback modes, since I'm hoping... The display is too smooth, and the image doesn't pop into focus as much as on the MkII.

Wow, best idea i've heard. Let me give it a shot. On the old 5D2, mine was mapped to the menu button but mapping this to the zoom will definitely help.

I initially hated this but, once I figured out the "map to set" button - it is a significant improvement.
I can now press this without the play button to automatically zoom to 100% of the last taken image. If anything, this is faster now than the 5D2.
You can also just hit the magnifying glass button without the play button also at any time but I understand you guys are wanting it to be an all right handed job. Right now my Set button is mapped to ISO but maybe I'll give it a try.
I happen to think that after remapping magnify to the Set button, this is a much better setup than the 5D2's (or 7D's). Everything can be done with the right hand (as before), but I would much rather turn the main dial to zoom in and out than have to repeatedly press buttons.
Canon should come out with a firmware fix that allows users to place the zoom button on the upper right buttons should they chose. As it is, in liveview or review mode, those buttons which used to zoom now have no use. Even with the set button set to zoom, it is amazing how much I have to turn my hand to zoom into a picture even with magnification automatically set to 100%. After 8-10 hours of shooting this causes quite a bit of hand fatigue and it makes me lose my grip on the camera if I'm running and gunning. The fact that you can automatically zoom into 100% is quite useful, but he new placement of the zoom button is completely incorrect and even navigating around the image makes you have to turn your hand again to hit the multi-controller. Also with liveview mode, I have to turn my hand so much to hit the zoom for focus that I completely lose what I'm wanting to focus on so I have to spend time re-finding it when I'm zoomed in. Often an impossible task.
Yes, email Canon and Chuck Westfall about this. Needs to be fixed asap.
For the liveview shooting with manual focus, the old zoom button it's right on place: you hold the lens with the left hand, and with your right you can zoom fast and easy to check accurate focus.
I finally had time to test it out with the remap and the set button looks like a nice workaround. I still wish I could zoom in/out by pressing the old buttons but this will have to do. I'll just have to get use to it.

This is one "feature" that is a huge step backwards on the 5D3. Much slower and cumbersome than the previous zoom button usage.
I don't see it as a huge step backwards. What could be simpler than skipping the review button, pressing on the magnifying button "one time" to get an enlarged view that can be customized to any magnification desired? A very minor getting used to type thing for me
I much prefer scrolling the wheel over pounding on the buttons but I actually wish it would be the back dial and not the top wheel. That would be ideal I think because it turns easier and also why can't we enable the touch sensitive wheel in camera mode, why only in video mode?
I bet some don't even know the wheel is touch sensitive like the original ipod.
