I think there are two issues being conflated here:
1. The change in VF design (transflective LCD)
2. Lack of momentary illumination in AI-Servo
The first will not change this generation--it is what it is.
The second can and should be fixed via a firmware update--it should be an option even if it does result in a risk of greater exposure variation at the start of a sequence (apparently the issue is that it affects metering--though if so it's unclear to me why they can do this in One Shot).
Yes, yes!
Some of us have written to Canon about this. I'd like to think that they're aware that _many_ of us would like some effort put into a FW update. I can fully understand why it doesn't have the highest priority for Canon, but I still hope that a fix is on the way SOON!

Unfortunately, Canon has limited resources that they will dedicate to corrections, which is why I was so vehement that the "light leak" hysteria was a very bad thing. It cost them a pretty penny to hold deliveries and "fix" the bodies in the pipeline; they may now be less willing to dedicate more resources to address further customer complaints

I agree. I was (am) angry at the people who made a big deal out of something that as far as I can tell had no negative effects on anyone's photography, as opposed to those who ridicule things that do affect photo performance because their own photography is not affected. Yeah, as Stan says, hope is free. If nothing comes of it, I'll manage and I'll still use the 5D3 productively. We've also been told that "it should have had this AF system years ago" and "it's overpriced" and "it should have 36 megapixels", blah, blah, but I own it, I use it, I have no regrets about the purchase. I would not give it up for a week to have Canon "fix the light leak"!

Not sure where or how you came about your understanding of Canon's available resources to make corrections .. are you privy to Canon policy on this? Or is this your own speculation?
Canon has historically shown a strong commitment to making things right, two that come immediately to mind are the 24-105 and the 1DMK3. There are others but for now I'd just like to know where you come to know about Canon's "limited resources that they will dedicate to corrections". Is this something new we should all be aware of?
And if anything the 5D3 issues will probably encourage Canon to research, develop, and test products more carefully in the future .. it's not an easy time for Canon right now on a couple of fronts, they can ill afford any future mistakes.

As with everything else posted in this thread, my post is based on my opinion and experience. Canon has been field testing this viewfinder and scheme for 3+ years now on the 7d; I have over 40000 clicks on mine - although I rarely use servo. I am not sure where or even if things went wrong with the 5d3/1dx or just that 7d owners use their camera differently. In either case, they have been very busy responding to customer complaints, and they have to triage those complaints and assign resources to deal with them.

I was shooting today and I saw a guy in the French Quarter with a D4, I asked him if I could look through the VF and surprise (!) the dang red af point was visible in bright daylight sigh...a Joy to use and move around
I came from the 5D, 1DsMKII,III and MKIV. All had RED AF illumination upon focus in ANY light!
My 5D3 only shows red in dark instances and stays black otherwise. It does not highlight in normal light and Canon sez that is correct.
I have talked to CPS 3 times about this and to no avail. They do state that this is one of the top complaints of the 5DMKIII.
I did send another complaint via the link provided in the beginning of the thread.

Here is another Canon answer:
Dear Dan:
Thank you for contacting Canon product support. We value you as a Canon customer and appreciate the opportunity to assist you.
Your request has been escalated to Tier 3 Support Engineering.
I am sorry to hear that you are unhappy with the black AF Points on the EOS 5D Mark III.
I understand that it can be difficult to see the black AF points in low light through the viewfinder. I have sent your request to our engineers for review. Please keep an eye on our website for any firmware updates that may become available to resolve this issue.
Please let us know if we can be of any further assistance with your EOS 5D Mark III. Thank you for choosing Canon.
Sincerely,
Rodney

While this only addresses PART of my trouble report, it is some response at least. It has been escalted to Tier 3 Support Engineering...If that means anything...

There are two conclusions to draw from this. Canon's developmental equipment testers are completely incompetent or Canon simply ignored them and decided 1 series users would be happy with sub standard 7D viewfinder.

Actually there's at least a third, but no point mentioning anything that doesn't vilify canon....

Please do tell. Anxious to hear a justification for taking a perfectly good VF design in 1 series bodies and
replacing it with one that is severely limited in low light in which we can't even see the AF point. This is Canon's
ultimate low light sports body. AI Servo tracking in low light is fundamental to its purpose.
