I'm not going away on this issue. I consider it a hindrance on an otherwise responsive and effective AF system. Such a shame that Canon would do this. It clearly is not an improvement.

Make up probably 70% of the shots I take. Not sure what you're up in arms about, but I've found nothing "disgusting" so far. It would be nice to have the points illuminate once you initiate focusing, but it hasn't been a deal breaker for me.
do you shoot moving subject with low light? Or do you shoot just standing subjects with good light? I shot my daughter's graduation this evening and once I selected the af point, after the red went off, I couldn't tell if the black af point was on my moving target or not. That is disgusting for a $4000 camera. On my 1D MarkIV the black af point aren't visible BUT the red led illuminated active point is always showing well in any kind of lights AND it stays on so you can track your moving subject. Then again if you worked with the 5D Mark II only of course this Mark III is better, but whether you find it problematic for your use or not, Canon screwed it up big time with this...as always two steps forward and one backwards...I wonder who are the Canon testers and what are they thinking?

that sounds strange "partially masked"? I gotta check that out...I wonder now if the firmware update they are talking about could make it like this then?
I don't think so. In the previous cameras, there would be some masking device (most probably some sort of LCD, because the masking is done electrically) between the LED and the focus screen. Now, there is nothing inbetween there.
But the key is that the XTi's light is much weaker. I think it's because on the focusing screen, the AF points could be made with some reflective layer, but the LCD in 7D/5D3 cannot reflect the light as well, so they had to put much stronger light source in there. Therefore the glow goes to the front element...
I still don't know how the reflection could be made on 1D screens. I saw the module with 45 LEDs, but there aren't any focusing points on 1D screens. I will have to check the glow in the 1D's front element and/or the viewfinder.

Remember the guy in Africa with the 600mk2, 200-400, 1DX and 5D3....that's the guy....oh and the thousands of 7D users over the last 3 years must have had some influence on Canon not finding issue with this new system.

The majority of 7D users are not going to be buying a 1DX at $7000. I would guess that most people buying the 1DX will be 1 series users already who are used to seeing the AF point in low light conditions. I shoot in some dark gyms and it's a pretty nice "feature" to have to be able to track subjects.
Shouldn't this be bloody obvious to a company promoting their flagship body as their best low light camera to date with new state of the art low light AF? Once again, I would love to have been in on those early rounds of development where they thought this was a great idea.

I will say that while I am not super happy about this, I *rarely* use AIServo AF with multiple points activated, and I think this is the majority use case. If you are picking a single AF point point then you obviously know where the AF point is, with or without illumination.

You know pretty much where its at if you if you are close and tight framing your subject, BUT if your subject is a bit further and the scene is dark, good luck

lol I have seen that ! "THAT" traffic light confirmation saved me $7000 !!!
I will wait for next round of cameras from Canon and see if that cr@p is still there...

Dear Alfonso Bresciani:
We appreciate your continued correspondence regarding EOS 5D Mark III.
You have a valid point and I can see where this camera, being a flagship body, should have this feature. Canon does monitor all forms of media and is aware of how this is affecting our loyal customers. Please, keep checking our website www.usa.canon.com for news of any future firmware updates that may resolve this issue.
Please let us know if we can be of any further assistance with your EOS 5D Mark III. Thank you for choosing Canon.

P.S. I had someone in the office today ask if my camera was possessed by a Cylon because of the red light he could see through the front element of the lens. If you don't know what a Cylon is, YouTube it.

You want to know where the active AF point is in the dark area, right? The only way is for the red light of the active AF point to be on all the time, at least while the camera is on. Will that not be more "distracting" than if it blinks only when the focus is achieved? I am lost here.....

As a 1D series user why are we sacrificing features that we already have? Why is Canon making compromises on
their flagship body? They certainly didn't make any compromises on the cost. A 40% increase over the 1D4.

I am not even sure whether we are still talking about the 5D Mark III as originally intended or have we expanded the "bitching" to the not quite readily available 1DX? With my post above I was referring to the OP's post as follows:

In several other posts he complained about the AF lights as being noticed by the people he photographed and that caused some distraction. So, I am not sure where he stands now.
