p.20 #1 · Olympus OM-D EM-5

Hi Jonas, yes, she is a very happy puppy Especially now that we just got some chickens She is probably around 100 lbs now at 16 months, her brothers are in the 130's. We have 5 acres of land and wanted a guardian dog with a desire to protect the kiddos as well, I think we found the perfect dog in this Great Pyrenees / Bernese Mountain mix called a Great Bernese.

My bad, I meant jpeg settings were at medium. All the above photo's were shot in MJPEG, I do have the ORF RAW files but didn't bother to convert those

p.20 #2 · Olympus OM-D EM-5

I finally got a chance to play with a pro-x1; nex 7 and em-5. I actually thought the em-5 evf blew away the nex-7. This was indoors and the nex was very vulnerable to the light flickering and such. It also seem to have less dynamic range than the em-5 (i.e, parts would wash out faster).
-
I played a bit with the em-5 with s-af+mf; when I manually focused it would shift to magnify focus but it always seemed to be the center (as oppose to the point that it had chosen to focused; is this correct or did I miss some options). Also with old manual focus lenses; how does the mangify feature work (i.e, how does it know when to kick in and where to kick in).
-
I also thought the first piece of the grip really helped; though the bottom piece is too bulky and quite frankly I think I'm too cheap to spend $300 on a bit of a vertical bar to get a well formed grip; but if they would offer the first portion by itself I might go that route.
-
All in all I felt the em-5 was simply a fun camera (the nex didn't really seem to strike me as that much fun; though I think it is probably a better video device nad it has a few nifty focus aids). The xpro-1 was interesting but I couldn't stand the evf and without the evf I have no clue how you would know if a non electronic lens was in focus; I did like the optical view finder but it had a very tough time with the auto focus in door (it had an 18f2 lens mounted; they did not have the 35f1.4 and the fuji represenative was not familiar with the camera).

I am not sure about the magnify being on the focus point, but I tried my E-M5 with a Olympus 50-200 f/2.8 - 3.5 lens in the S-AF+MF mode and at 200mm (400mm in full frame terms) the magnify was very difficult to use because it zoomed in so close in the EVF that my hand shake caused the image to jump all over the place. Of course I did not have IBIS turned on for the EVF so this may have helped.

One other point on the 50-200 and the 12-60 Olympus 4/3 lenses and the E-M5, some have said that focus works pretty good; however, that was not my experience, I was better off manually focussing these lenses than waiting for all the step focussing to go through its process and then more often than not the final confirmed focus was actually not in focus. So my recommendation is that if you want AF use the lenses made for AF on m43 (the only 43 lens I know of that works well is the 14-54 II version). Hopefully the E-M5 will bring in so much interest and revenue for Oly that they will start making some fast zooms in m43 mount.

One final thought, the Olympus 75mm f/1.8 lens cannot come fast enough

I was fooling around the other night and I think that in low light, I can actually do better with the OMD and the 14-42 at 42mm than I can do with my D700 and 85/1.4. The IBIS really is impressive. I need to play with my 20/1.7 on it a bit.

You can set the magnification to a different degree. I had the same problem at first until I read the manual and decreased the magnification. Also turned on the IBIS at half shutter press and it really helps steady the viewfinder to focus. I dare say this camera may be easier to manual focus with than the Nex 5N even with the peaking.

You can customize so much on the E-M5, it is the most complicated camera I have ever used, once you figure out the settings you want and get used to it, it is really a joy to use.

Then she really is happy, and for several reasons!
I uspected it should have been JPG but as I still haven't read everything in the manual I had to check.

Yes, you should set the IBIS to work at a half press of the shutter button. Having a stabilized view when focusing helps a lot.

Try the 45mm 1.8 and you'll go insane with delight.

Jordan; Your review is joy to read, it's nicely laid out and at the end written from a user's perspective. (Maybe I don't agree about everything but that is not the matter here.) Thank you for all the work and a very nice presentation!

Does anyone here know if the EM-5 can trigger a set of Auto Bracketed Exposures with the timer? It's so annoying that previous Panasonic and Olympus m4/3 cameras doesn't have this feature.

Some portraits with the EM5 + Oly 45mm 1.8. I am still processing these but the JPEGS are of superb quality and can easily be played with in post. It is nice that I have better IQ than my E-5/E-3 with a lighter kit. I can't wait to get the 75mm from Oly if it is anything like the 45 then we will have a winner.

I think he means, can you set the self timer and have the camera take all shots of a bracket. The answer to that is no, as far as I can figure. I've never had a need for this, though. You CAN have bracketing on and use the self timer, but you'll need to hit the shutter and wait for the timer for each of the bracketed images.

Thanks Jonas and alemmo, this was the next setting I was going to configure was the 1/2 press shutter IBIS control. And thanks for the hint about the level of magnification.

I still hold to my comments about the 12-60 and the 50-200 (and most any other 4/3 lenses) if you already own these lenses then you're gold, but if not and you have no plan for anything other than m43 then why spend the extra money for these beautiful SWD lenses as there are plenty of superb MF lenses out there for your pleasure

What kind of battery life are you guys getting ? To me, battery life seems somewhere between awful and dismal. The situation is made worse by the apparent unavailability of replacement batteries. Has anyone been able to get one?

Is there a way to force the camera to only use the EVF? Does anyone have tips on maximizing battery life?

Yea, that's what I mean. So nothing have changed with Olympus either? Having the timer is important because it prevents vibration from being an issue especially when you want to do HDR photography.

So you're absolutely sure that the self timer can't be used to trigger a set of AEB images?
