From another link about the same sound, I read that Olympus claims the noise is from the IS that is always working in the viewfinder/ EVF versus the sensor IS.

Yes, you can read all sorts of stuff when surfing the Net.

My impression from following a couple of threads on the matter is that the problem probably is a non-issue (at least for still images).

No, there is no separate IS working with the EVF/LCD and not with the CCD and I doubt Olympus has claimed anything at all (except from this being the the world's fastest AF camera and the best IBIS ever camera of course... ). The sound is probably coming from the electro-magnetic In Body Image Stabilization system which needs to hold the sensor at place even when IBIS is turned off.

Yeah, I don't know. I guess since the noise is confirmed by a number of users and seems to be normal, it will be a case of not mattering to some and being a deal breaker for others, depending upon how sensitive each individual is to it.

I have a Nex and lack of lens is a problem for me as I am looking for small form factor. Using other lens makes it just a small body with a large lens

Yup, I guess that's how it is. I'm on a waiting list and I haven't changed my mind because of these reports.

I wonder if the noise will be an issue for videos....

In that thread Andy Westlake says the noise goes away when video recording starts.

Can it be that bad? I'm sure Olympus won't release it if it really is that bad.

Yeah, "confirmed by users". Tee-hee-hee.

I stay up into the wee hours of the morning playing with myself (err, hey, I mean with my gear and image editing of course!) and just after I got my CV Lanthar it sounded dry to me even tho it was supposed to actually be new/unused. So I asked three other people who I knew owned the lens and every one of them told me I was crazy - followed by another reply the next day "confirming" that theirs "sounded" dry too. I was relieved that it was part of the design and not dried up grease or something but that should kinda show that you can probably get users to "confirm" almost anything no matter how insignificant even though if it wasn't pointed out to them it would likely go unnoticed (or even liked) for years!

I love the sound of servo motors myself! As long as it doesn't drain the batteries too much I'll likely like whatever sounds the OM-D makes. Maybe it'll sound like Johnny-5 doing the twist? Kewl!

Yep, that happens all the time but in this case, there was not such a social experiment at work involving mass suggestion. At least the two instances I read are completely independent observations without one having knowledge of the other. That fact gives more credence to the possible issue and the probability that others might notice it.

I'm that crazy person who, upon hearing a ticking clock from the next room at 3am when sleeping away from home, gets up and takes the damn battery out to silence it before I can sleep. If I heard any annoying sound emanating from a camera which was being held up to my eye while taking a photograph, it would absolutely drive me nuts.

No one knows yet of course... and those two have non-production samples... but my bogusometer is reading kinda high right about now.

Next we'll be reading reports that the new anti-shake system creates enough centrifugal force that the camera can jump right out of you're hands and spaz out on the floor.

Just when I thought I can finally upgrade my m4/3... looks like I will stick with my trusty GF1 for a few more years.

Someone should go into a sound-proof room with the camera and record a video to see the the sound show up in the video.

Non-production samples? I did not see where that was the case. Links?

The camera is apparently shipping in Asia already: Have you checked yourself?

It's really not a problem. Some folks just live to bitch about things, especially about things they have no hands-on experience with. It's the etiquette of the forum users on DPR to blow shit out of proportion...

I played with the E-M5 at CP+ in Yokohama and again a few days ago at Yodobashi Camera. Neither time did I notice any buzzing...I guess I should have been in a silent room listening with a stethoscope.

Sadly, sold out at all of the largest chains for one month. Ouch!

I ordered the kit with the 14-42, hoping that it would be in the least demand. According to Amazon, I'm right about that - it's 42 on the list - all the others are towards the top.

I just hope there is a reasonable supply of that kit.

Having been burned before on MFT, I'm going to wait until the DXO numbers come out.

If it can just match up to the D5100/D7000 sensor, this would be a no brainer for me to be married to the Panny 7-14mm and Panny Leica 45mm F2.8 Macro.

It won't, at least in RAW. Maybe in JPEG as Oly's JPEG engine is arguably the best available by a fair amount. But in RAW it will still lag the Sony 16MP sensor as we already know the approximate performance of this sensor from the Panny cameras which share it. I expect Oly to provide a bit more performance than Panasonic did via their more mature processing engine but they won't be able to deliver miracles and a miracle is what it would take for a 16MP m43 sensor to match the performance of a same-generation, same pixel count sensor in APS-C.

That said, I expect performance numbers akin to the last of the Sony 12MP-based cameras and resolution comparable to the 16MP sensor.

I agree. No way will the m43 16MP sensor match the APS Sony 16MP sensor in raw.
