Size is the main reason I ordered 20mm. I think OMD+20mm is best compact combo right now.
Will share the pix next week when I get the lens. I plan to keep it as my only lens at least for a month .

The 20mm also has a much closer MFD - 8" vs just under 12" on the 25mm.

Read more posts. About 2-3 stops at the long end. Maybe 2.

Carsten, have you got a Nikon converter yet? (who produces a decent one?)
I am curious how ZF lenses are doing on the Olympuses (since you have the PL-3 and not the E-M5) - the two 50s or the 35.2, or either 25 and 28 - they are not much heavier than the 25/1.4, might be interesting to try. 50 MP might be a sweet macro lens on it. And your beloved 50/1.4 as a portrait lens? , the 21 might be a bit bulky though

Did you seem my post on the previous page with my Canon FD 50-300L? It works. Won't get you 4 stops like the shorter focal lengths, but 2-3 is pretty easy, and let's face it, being able to hand hold 300mm (600 equiv) at 1/125s is pretty nice.

The IBIS is what is making this camera well worth the upgrade for me. AF is actually not quite as good in lower light as the Panny bodies (not bad, but not quite as good), and noise performance is only a small step up from the latest Panasonic's, but the outstanding IBIS and the improved dynamic range are the biggies for me.

I'm thinking abuot this camera as a simple easy to use walk around camera but have a couple of questions:
Does the viewfinder have a 'level' indicator that shows tilt both right/left as well as front/back ?
Also for lenses if I were to get a general zoom what makes sense - thought has been
14-42 kit lens (kind of limited; but $100 with camera; not sure of optics)
14-54 (good image quality; adapter is free but still $600)
14-45 (panny); around $300 since it is not part of a kit
12-50 (long end too slow; so poor image quality there; also kind of bulky for a poor performing lens)
50-150 (olympus; $100 off if ordered with camera so $200)
-
For primes I'm leaning towards
25f1.4; 45f1.8 maybe panny 14f2.5 maybe the 75f1.8 when avaiable
-
At time of purchase my thought was one of the zooms (and maybe 50-150 for the discount) as well as 45f1.8 since I tend towards the long end of life. Anyways thoughts on the lens aspect would be helpful - I tend to prefer longer lenses with close focus; the thing about the zoom is I believe both panny and olympus will be offering something a bit higher end with native micro 4/3 mount but I don't know when; if the 14-42 is decent (i've not seen many samples from it nor reviews) maybe that wuold be a reasonable route until the new stuff comes out.

Yes. It's one of the info screen options. You can't have the levels and the live histogram on at the same time, though (if you were interested in both).

14-42 kit lens (kind of limited; but $100 with camera; not sure of optics)

The 14-42 that comes with the OM-D is better than the old E-P1 kit zoom, but it's still unremarkable. It's quite sharp from about 14-35mm, but softens a bit at the longer end. It's certainly usable, but isn't stellar.

14-54 (good image quality; adapter is free but still $600)
Of course, outstanding lens, but very large compared to the size of the camera.

14-45 (panny); around $300 since it is not part of a kit
Bigger than the Oly kit zoom, but quite good optically, and much sharper at 45mm. This is one of the best kit zooms around. I'm deciding whether or not to keep mine now that I have the Oly kit zoom...I don't use it very much, so I'm thinking of selling it.

12-50 (long end too slow; so poor image quality there; also kind of bulky for a poor performing lens)
The 12-50 is Ok as far as image quality goes, but supposedly has a really nice macro mode. I wouldn't say it's poorly performing from what I've seen, it's just not stellar. It also is the only weathersealed m4/3 lens, so if you're going to be shooting in the rain, it might make sense to get this just for that reason.

50-150 (olympus; $100 off if ordered with camera so $200)
I assume you mean the 40-150 M.Zuiko? If so, it's a great lens. It's small and cheaply built, but really wonderful optics. It softens a little at long distances at 150mm, but within about 20 feet it is razor sharp at all focal lengths wide open. Really high bang for buck with this lens, and with the E-M5's IS, it's even better. When within that 20-30 foot range, I found it to compare favorably with the Canon 70-200 f/2.8L IS II. As in, at a 10 foot focus distance, it was as sharp if not a tiny bit sharper wide open on my GH2 than the Canon was on my 1Ds II. I wouldn't have believed it if I hadn't seen it with my own eyes.

The 25/1.4 and 45/1.8 are among my favorite lenses of all time. I was not pleased with the 14/2.5, and returned it after a week. The Oly 12/2 is expensive, but stellar. I may also get the 75/1.8 when it comes out.

Ok, I tested out the E-M5's 'Face Priority Autofocus' mode today. It's an interesting mode. In normal everyday usage, AF will work just like normal...select a focus point, and it uses that point. I have single point focus, usually at the center, but I'll use other points as well as needed. Anyway, everything will work just fine with that. Then, if it detects a face, it will override your focus point and focus on the face. If it can detect the eyes, it will focus on the near-side eye. (you can also set it to do Right or Left eye as well).

So, I tried it out today. Essentially no false positives (as in, it didn't switch to non-face subjects in normal shooting...it stuck to my selected focus point). When it found a face, though, it worked pretty darn well. I was shooting with my Leica 25/1.4 at f/1.8, so relatively shallow DOF, and I thought I'd try it out while my daughter and I were playing Moon Dough. Because her eyes were down most of the time, it did not find her eyes all that often. (though when it did, it correctly locked focus on the near eye). It did find the face, though, and lock on. When only finding the face, it tended focus deeper into the face than the near eye, in order get as much of the face in focus as possible. This worked fine for the 25mm, but may not be so good withe tight headshots with the 45/1.8...though in that case, it would likely find the eyes and focus properly right on the near eye. It hovers a box over where the face is, and a tiny box will appear on the eye when it finds an eye.

Here's a series. For these shots, it's horrible overhead mixed light from the 3 lamp chandelier directly over the table we were at, so no artistic judgments (there's lamps of two different color temperatures in the chandelier right now, so light quality is awful...the worst in my house)...The first and last shots in this series are individual shots, but all the ones in the middle were taken one after another as my daughter was mugging for the camera and rapidly changing position. The center focus point was active. As you can see, it tracked her face, and nailed it. There would be no way to get all these shots without some sort of face detection, as there was no time to focus/recompose, and you couldn't switch focus points this fast. Because it doesn't false positive much, I think I'm going to leave this on a good part of the time, though with less motion-happy subjects, I'd prefer to set focus exactly where I want.

You're killing me Jman, try as I might I just can't find anyone to give my money to in exchange for an E-M5...

Can I ask what you didn't like about the Panasonic 14mm 2.5? The Oly 12mm looks great but it's pricey for a lens that I wouldn't use that often, 28mm is already pretty wide for me.

No, I don't have the adapter... Initially I was all gung-ho to get one, but with time I came to just appreciate the lenses I have. I suppose I will want something longer at some point, but right now I feel no need. The upcoming 75/1.8 looks very interesting...

I have been using the AF tracking on the face with my kids with the 12/2 and 45/1.8....I confirm what Jordan is saying. 100% accuracy on shots I would have no way of getting without. The AF accuracy is as remarkable as the IBIS.

I take no responsibility for money spent. One cool thing about getting a bunch of gear over the years is that I can get new gear generally without spending a dime. For instance...my E-M5 - paid for by selling my GH2, Oly 17, a Kenko 1.4x TC and my Nikon 105/2.5. (though I still need to sell the TC and GH2, but those will be for sale shortly).

One thing I am noticing. While the AF in the E-M5 is good...Very good, actually...it's not quite as good as the AF in the GH2 or GX1. It's plenty fast, and generally very accurate, but it will miss occasionally in low light, and it's not quite as precise as the GX1 autofocus. With the GX1, you can put the focus on an absolute pinpoint, while the E-M5 doesn't give you quite that level of control. It will also just occasionally flat out miss focus in low light, which is something I basically never ever experience with the GX1. We're not talking a high percentage...maybe one out of 20 shots, but still...it's something I've noticed overall.

Well... To be honest, I fell in love with it the day it came out (once I got over the appearance). Weather sealing and better IBIS alone sold me. I'll get one eventually. Your posts nicely describe what actually working with one is like, and that's invaluable...

Sorry to hijack this thread for a second, but I have lightroom 4 and it doesn't seem to recognize my em5 raw files. Am I doing something wrong or are we waiting for an update? Thx
