With talk of an absolute need for the best optics on the D800 and it's high-MP successors, how many of you are really ready?

DAMNIT, clicked no vote. Oh well.

I'm all set. Got a decent pc;

i7 920 2.66ghz
6ghz 1600mhz ram

Also got good glass. Glass is in my profile. The only lenses I'm not sure will be up to the task are my AF-D primes. 35 F2, 50 1.8, and 85 1.8. Lensrentals doesn't seem to rate the 16-35 F4, but I'm not changing my lenses now so, yeah. We shal see.

Can someone points out if there is any "problem" using the older MF AI/AIS lenses? I guess I preferred not to read(and do pixel calculation) about it but I would like to see the differences. Comparing to the D700 would be nice

The unpleasant Bjørn Rørslett passingly mentioned that he had his doubts about the 28/2 AIS but the NOCT did fine. A poster on nikongear has shots from the 50/1.2, 105/2.5 AIS and 35/1.4 AIS on the D800 and they look good. The same uncertainty prevailed when FX appeared and MF NIkkors that faired poorly on the crop, did surprisingly well on the FF. So who knows. Lloyd Chambers discusses the issues some of the Zeiss lenses have with CA and predicted worse performance for the 28/2 and to a lesser extent the 35/2.

Mihai's been posting some of his D800 shots in the Manual Focus thread. Doesn't appear to be any problem with what he's shot so far

Yes, I look forward to using my 16/3.5 AI'd, 105/2.5 AIS, 135/2 AIS, 200/4 AIS, and 400/5.6 ED AIS on a D800 (whenever I can get my hands on one).

Now, will these be tack sharp wide open? Likely not, but they will be very very good and I expect when the images are downsampled to 12MP they will be outstanding.

I suspect that many times the limitation to their sharpness will be my focusing technique.

Where is the check mark for "new mac, plenty of top glass, no interest in a d800"?

+1

New iMac and glass I love but not at all certain the D800 makes sense for me, at least not at the moment. I'm still pretty stoked about the D700. The D800 certainly has some fine new features and eventually I'll need to upgrade, but at the moment I have no burning desire to buy the D800. I don't print, I can't imagine doing video and the D700 handles low light just fine for me. But I'm loving the excitement and enjoying what folks are doing with the camera. Nikon has once again given us a state of the art camera at an affordable price. Who could complain about that?

16 2.8D, sharp but some fringing in the corners, like the D700.
14-24, one of the best out there, shines on the 800.
17-35, Not as good as the 14-24 at infinity in the corners at 17-22 due to some curvature of field, Otherwise very good, best suited as my PJ / underwater lens.
28/2 AIS, just as beautiful on the 800 as the 700.
35/2 AIS, same as 28/2
35 1.4G, stunning, one of the best.
50 1.4G, nearly as good as the 35, still not convinced of the MTF charts saying it is not very good on the D800.
50 1.8E, basically the same as on the 700, but flaws enlarged, still a great cheap throw in pocket 50 which is how I use it.
60 6.8 D, while sharp, chromatic aberration shows at even F/8-F/10, might need to go to the N coated version.
75-150 3.5 AIS, just as good on the 800 as the 700, one of the best lenses for hiking / back country skiing ever, wish it were N coated and just as small.
105 2.5 AIS, brilliant on the D800, just like the 700.
70-200 VR-II, one of my best lenses on the 800, only slightly less with a TC-14E.

Running a MacPro 3.33 6 core booting off of stripe raid twin SSD's, HD5770 GPU, 32GB ram, 12TB of internal storage, 16TB RAID external, working with D800 files just fine...

Why, because of your own personal experience or those statements of lens testers who don't really shoot photos?

Sample variation then? Mine is spectacular...

Just to satisfy my curiosity, I just rented the ZF 50/2 and the 60 2.8 G. I do a lot of food shooting and use both the 50 1.4 and the 60 2.8 D for that, the Zeiss could be great for both food and video.

Neither. Nikon didn't list the 50 f/1.4G as a recommended lens to be used with the D800. On my D3s, the lens is superb starting at f/2. Anything wider than that leads to poor sharpness, with f/1.4 being the worst.

Which beckons the question, how soon is a 50/1.2 G due out? Hard to beleive they would leave a 50 prime gap unfilled for long.

not really, i would find a good one, even the one returned from calibration was still poor. it is designed to be mainstream fast glass, not pro glass. It focuses as slow as nothing on earth and cannot be used wide open as good as other pro f1.4 glass. It is worse then it's predecessor, which at nikon is something not happening often. i believed for some years that they made a space for the 501.2G which would then be THE REAL 50, but...
I mean, it is good enough for pro use, especially at f2, but why would anybody use it when there are better and cheaper options?

The first time I throw a wedding of 36MP files at my PC I think it will fall over and die. I'll use my backup D700 for reception work to try and limit the pain until I have enough saved after nikon's UK price gouging to upgrade my PC.
