My problem with underexposing is the poor ISO quality...maybe that varies by body as well?

Phase detect AF? Don't know anything about that but the two D800's that I've owned showed the same results, very similar to what I see above.

I was shooting in mid day yesterday with my D800 - 24-70 - 70-200 and I was so disappointed when I got home with the files. I just miss my crispness of my D3s. At 400 ISO, I couldn't believe the noise. Was shooting at 400 to support the shutter and f8 aperture.

I swear though, the video on that thing is great, wouldn't say it's much better than the D7000 for overall quality but ease of use during video and audio levels make it an incredible HDSLR!

Then something's wrong...settings? exposure? and what noise Here's "crisp" for ya.
Mid afternoon, 300 f4 wide open SOOC Yeah, handheld too.
