Lovely bird shots KirkB, even that Grebe, as creepy as he looks.
Beautiful shots too Graham, and I imagine what a.RodriguezPix is referring to is some Jpeg compression as you suggested, I am certainly getting a little bit. Not enough to stop them from being very nice shots though!
Apart from the cat photo I am feeling underwhelmed by the images posted here. To my eyes the images posted in the OM-D/Pen thread on the Alt forum have a lot more impact and have been processed much better than the images here.
Very odd as I expected the D800 images to 'pop'
I'm not an Olympus fanboy, don't own one, but I do own a D700 and am looking to upgrade to the D800, so its disappointing not to see many images here that scream 'wow!'
Have you checked out the D800e and the "best nikon shots" threads as well?
Your comment made me visit the OM-D thread just now, and there are some great shots there. But to my eye, also a lot of shots that have been overprocessed, resulting in obvious HDR look or colors and contrast far beyond what the eye or film would have perceived. To each their own in that regard...

Why would you expect that? Almost all the advantages of the D800 sensor are lost by the time the images are posted as small jpegs. In fact the more DR the sensor has, the less contrast the image has (before any post-processing)
I also had a look at the other thread and as I suspected they are more high contrast and saturated images. You can easily achieve that look with the D800 images but most people choose not to.

Images are what the owner make them, I would assume, but as for "POP" ask the "3D" CROWD? I just shoot what I feel. I love to read books, mostly the "Gothic" in the ancient form, sense.

I now have my D800 for a week and this is what I noticed as well. I add more contrast in postprocessing to the pictures than before.
And in the OMD-thread there are very nice but also very average pictures, just like in every picture-thread.

If even you feel compelled to say "Ughh" what makes you think others will appreciate it? Even you know it's a poor picture.
Why even share it?
Show your best, raise the bar
I is, what I is, Guari. I try, trust me, I tried, however, just like my son, his friends won't stay inactive enough to go the whole nine yards! I tried I still wanted to share this quick capture, and it was in door, with in door light bulbs, and hand held via the D800 and Nikkor 85mm 1.4D shot quickly! xD derp

If you were to follow this thread from the start you would find many that pop and have unbelievable detail. At the risk of offending some (I will include myself) as photographers there are some of us who lack the composition and processing skills (Will / TM does his in camera) that the rest of us lack.

Was the lens wide open? What Iso?
Guari, Thank you! It was at 1/25 ƒ/2.5 ISO 640 85mm, I tried to move fast, but in the end, this was my best result! I will try again tomorrow, but for now I need sleep, "we" my son that is, has a soccer match at 7:30 AM here in California! I know my son, and his team will win, he is an excellent team captain! He takes after his mum!
