I knew the resolution was just sick, but this is a bit ridiculous. Taking the obligatory dog test shot (having a jet black dog is great for looking at shadows).
Just an out of camera jpg, but zooming in to 100% on the left eye is pretty impressive. Not my best self portrait, but perhaps one of the more interesting.
ISO 3200 and ISO 6400 looked very harsh (blocky? kinda) on the D700 IMO. On the D800 the noise looks different. It has character, makes me smile. Will definitely be using this camera up to 6400!
This is some very fine pictures, thank you very much for sharing.
As I see it most - or all ? - pictures are in good light, or at least not in bad light, if you have the time could you perhaps later post some high iso-pictures with more darker (maybe night) and perhaps also mixed (natural and art.) light ?
Nice work domdog.
So, I just looked at a few quick test shots of my own: lichen on tree bark.
Tripod, ISO 200, f/8, 100 micro. The detail is just ridiculous.

Sorry folks no shots of any Windex bottles in this thread,,,,nor any speculation off samples you I saw off the web...
Had a chance to get out with the D800 for the first time this am (also I may be the first person to shoot a Weimaraner with a D800...well in NJ at least) - with my limited experience so far with it I can sit here and truthfully tell you this is the best camera Nikon has produced to date. Its as groundbreaking as the D3 was upon release...IMO more so.
This mini review doesn't apply to pro sports shooters or those of you who feel the need to say the D800 can't shoot at 8fps or it can't shoot at 200k ISO - yea we know but 1% of DSLR owners need those two expanded features...for the image takers and those who enjoy the sport and hobby of photography this is the camera you want to own.
I went out with the 24-70 and 70-200 VRII this am - all shot handheld mostly in Aperture priority with Auto-Iso set to change as the focal length changes (awesome new feature)
One think you need to take into account is that viewing images on the lcd screen you may miss the slight motion blur that you will see on your monitor. I had a few shots that I thought I nailed on the LCD but when I got home they had motion blur and these were at 1/100th or above of a second. Nikon wasn't kidding when they said err on the faster ss side of things...
ISO - this is a hot topic...I have see many people "claim" that its only marginally better than the D700 or the D3....folks at ISO6400 is better than my D3s (to my eyes)
So there you have it some real world samples - hardly professional but as with any new piece of gear you need to learn it and what better way then getting out there and shooting - folks please don't take my dissertation as FACT - when you get yours make your own conclusions but please DO NOT listen those who haven't even got their hands on one yet and are trying to downplay the seriousness of this machine. DXO doesn't lie....I am will be posting many more samples over the weekend....until then its almost happy hour.... ...Show more →
They are amazing photos!! Can't wait to get mine, hopefully next week!

Since I posted something similar over in Canon land, I might as well post here...
Apart from the eleventy billion ISO shots, I wouldn't be able to tell if the photos were shot with a Rebel XSi, D3, 50D, d700, 1d...
Sorry OP, this is not meant to insult you. It's just the whole insane-ness of it all with the hoopla around the 5d3, 1dx, d800 and d4. So far all the images posted are no more special than by other cameras. I saw pretty pictures shot with the old 5d and D7000 threads too.
Plainly put with the web sized images, I just can't tell whether these cameras are producing better images than its predecessors.
I respectfully disagree - the OP has posted 100% crops of these images also. The images as a whole might obtainable with other good (and older) cameras but not the level of detailed shown in the crops - they are awesome.

Have you got any fast primes to test on it. My only concern with this camera is it is it miss focusing with fast primes. My D7000 is so hit & miss...missing more than hitting positive focus.
I can imagine with this awesome high iso performance pushing the shutter up will be easy to avoid camera shake, so long as it is just camera shake I'll be happy.
The res shown in these pics is awesome when seeing the 100% crops, thanks for the info!
Dom, those all show just amazing detail. Best real world shots I've seen and well done. Great color also.
My biggest question/concern is how fast the focus locks on compared to the D3s. I've read that it's the same as the D700 and I've read it's faster than the D3s. I'd love to know.
Thanks all - In regards to the AF Speed its more akin to the D3s in terms of acquisition, a bit quieter since the motor isn't as powerful but quick to snap into focus with an AF-S lens. When it comes to tracking it behaves more like the D7000, the first few 3 bursts were spot on and the last 1 or 2 were off a tad - My usual action tracking is AF-C AFON to focus - single point or 9pt dynamic
I really only shot like 7 or 8 bursts and nearly all of them had one out of focus slightly. There are so many variables here to take into account but its safe to say with good technique it should be a great outdoor sports body...
Nice work! domdog
by the way, I sold the D7000 that I bought from you and I pre order to D800, and will arrive next week, Can't wait to try the camera out
That combo provides an insane amount of detail to say the least. I've read it will be very fussy in regards to any out of focus shots due to movement and such. But man when you nail it they look unreal. It certainly would be a fun tool to have in one's arsenal.
Really excellent work domdog. I was initially concerned about the high mp count of the d800, and thinking that I would need a tripod to pull off any shots without blur. But you have given a great example of the real potential here. Would you mind elaborating a little regarding your technique when taking these shots (shutter speed when using your auto-iso, purely handheld or were you able to obtain balance with a stationary object?)
Most of my photos are somewhat spontaneous with the kids and animals, so just trying to gauge if hitting high percentage spot on focus will be possible with the d800 when shooting purely handheld. Usually not able to utilize a tripod or monopod, and honestly prefer not to take shots in a static position.
