Apologies in advance for the cross-post, but what I'd really like to see is an image shot to expose for highlights, and then pushed in LR or ACR to bump the exposure up and see what the noise looks like in the shadows.

Unlike the prior generation of Canon sensors, the D3s does magnificently with these situations, but the question of whether the D800 can stand the same is as yet unresolved.

Any chance an early D800 owner can post some images at various ISO's to show the shadows after a 1 stop push?

Nice shots. Resolution and whatnot looks good to me, but I'm on the side of those who don't really see what the hoopla is all about vs. the D700, etc.

Indeed D700 users might need to think hard if the D800 is worth it to them. But when you judge the D800 based purely on Nikon included in this replacement, compared to what other manufacturers include in their replacements, it's a bit astonishing. Tripling the resolution and increasing DR while decreasing noise. 100% viewfinder and extra card slot. Movie mode and the same AF as what is included in the new D4.

And they did this while keeping the MSRP the same?

Nikon just cannibalized the sale of the D3X with a camera that costs thousands less and has better image quality. I think that is pretty "hoopla" justified.

Chris,

I agree about the "hoopla" being justified.

I have always been a DX shooter (D300s currently) because I like the discount on reach the DX format offered. Most of my shots are landscapes, buildings, and people. This would push me toward FX. But, I do enough motorsports and animals that the reach of DX was critical on my lens budget. I was looking at buying a D700 as a second body because it handle low light situations much better than my D300s and would be great for much of what I shot.

The D800 has a DX mode that offers a very usable 15 megapixels which is better than my D300s. I would like more than 6 FPS with a battery pack in DX mode, but that is really more than I need 99% of the time. The D800 has everything I could want in an FX camera and has an incredible movie mode.

For the price of a D700 and what I can sell my D300s for, I can buy a D800. I will wait a while to see what the D400 ends up being, but I am probably buying the D800.

The per pixel quality in the first batch of 100% crops is incredible.

You could pull prints just from those crops.

Thanks for the clarification. It is important information, especially when you explicitly write "100% crops". Not everybody checks what we actually see. You see, in this thread there are members who still believe those are pixel level crops, even after the clarification.

Don't mean to single out you, Jammy. And I do think the D800 can pull out fantastic detail

Good points.

For someone buying into FX for the first time it's definitely a very attractive package.

sorry but you clearly have no clue what you are talking about, or you are just a canon fanboy

the images he posted CLEARLY show (the 100% crop) a level of detail that is astonishing, and that no other camera (that is not a MF) has had before

I'm not sure who you're talking to, but you're the one who's clearly misinformed.

The crops are NOT 100% crops. This is FACT.

However, I do think they are very nice. Have a nice day.

I'm curious to know at what ISO did you shoot pictures 3 and 6, as they miss exif data. Best regards.

Yeah, I'm starting to wonder if the D800E is worth the moire hassle. Was thinking of keeping D3S for low light and D800E for more detail; but now i'm wondering if I'll cancel D800E order...

This is why I'll drop my Canon and switch back to Nikon. Proof enough for me.

The shot showing the particles stirred up by the dog's sniffing is my favorite.
If I had viewed your D800 shots on my hi res 17" laptop monitor, I'd be in the 'can't tell anything from web examples' camp, as I usually am. Looking at them on the 27" NEC PA271 monitor, I can see the resolution improvement of the D800 over what I'm used to looking at on this monitor--- shots from a D3. Thanks for showing.

Here's an effective ISO 51,200 photo taken at ISO 6400 and underexposed 3 stops

PP:
* ACR Exposure +2.00 stops
* ACR Fill Light +40
* ACR Chrominance NR 25, Luminance NR 24
* CS5 Bicubic sharper to 12MP
* Temp = 3650+10

12MP Full-Size

ahhh crap, i was hoping it wouldn't be this good. I have a D700 and have been saving for the 300 F4 for a while so i could have something longer then 2 and it pairs will with a tele. but now i may have to scrap that and get this... lol the crop alone can make up for the missing 100mm. looks super sharp even have cropping/

My experience with cameras with no AA filter (so, theoretically, moire should be more of an issue than w/the D800E) is it's really not a big problem. I rarely see it, and it's an easy fix when I do. If you like sharp detail, go for it.
