p.1 #1 · New D800 Issue related to RAW (NEF) files and sizes...
To preface, I have been shooting raw through D40,D60,D80,D300, D700...
So I know basics. Just to get out of the way L O L!
It's still OK to call me stupid though! !
(especially if I turn out to be stupid)
So I picked up a new D800 yesterday. This is what's occuring...
I may just be doing something completely stupid, but have now tried recording in uncompressed, lossless compressed, and compressed.
Went to Dead Horse Point this morning to taks lots of shots with raw, and a few jpegs (in the SD card). Three different CF cards for raw since they were 4MB cards and filled up fast.
All my raw files are at 1632x1080 when I read them, even though the files are quite large.
My Capture NX2 is current, so is Adobe Photoshop CS5 and the raw converter...
I have all current upgrades including the new Adobe Camera Raw version 6.7 which works with the Nikon D800 NEF files.
Adobe camera RAW will open downloaded sample NEF files (like the Polish 10 bills linked here a while ago), but will not open my camera shot NEF files.
Capture NX2 will open my raw files (maybe), at the reduced size, or is it really opening the embedded jpeg?
No matter how I set the raw parameters (Uncompressed, lossless compressed, or compressed) my files end up being 1632x1080 size. Not the ultra high resoluton files. If I take three shots back to back, a RAW, a TIFF, and a JPEG the file sizes end up being 1632x1080 (raw) 41.5mb, 7360x4912 (tiff)103mb, and 7360x4912 (jpeg)13.6mb
The size of the raw files at approximately 43mb indicate to me that the data is there, as a D700 raw file was about 12mb.
What is going on?
Is anyone else shooting RAW?
Has anyone experienced this??
Could I have a very low serial numbered camera that wasn't fully upgraded with firmware?
It is 3000765...

Brilliant
I have higher capacity cards en route. I mentioned that just to show there were different cards being used...
Anyway, with my D700 I could get 151 raw files on a card, so it's not a huge concern. Even if these only hold 1/4 of the pics. Actually I think it says 51

Have you considered that you are in "Movie Mode", and are capturing stills. From what I remember reading, you can capture files in Movie mode, but they are restricted to x x 1080. The 1080 part is what is ringing a bell for me.

I have exactly the same problem as ckcarr. Nothing helps. LR4 not working with NEFs, in ViewNX2 raw files are at 1632x1080. I have higher serial number 6002xxx.

just a raw converter issue though. i have no problems with raws converted with latest beta Adobe DNG converter. Jpegs are fullsize too.
I would suggest to reset camera to default (to eliminate all settings) and see what happens

I think its software. PS and DXO don't even see my files same with ACD Pro 5. everything is OK in ViewNX2. Every thing will be fine in time.
this will resolve your issues in CS5 for raw conversion temporarily if you choose to use it. i am for my D4 output. the final version will be out shortly.

None of the above were the answers.
It's simple. But Nikon did not say much about it, if at all.
I have always used and relied on Nikon Transfer to upload my files since 2005 or so.
Nikon Transfer still works fine for tiffs & jpegs, but Nikon did not update Nikon Transfer with the new camera releases although I had the most recent copy (threw out my notes as it's been several days so I do not have the versions). But the stand alone Nikon Transfer program resizes and also makes your Raw files (NEF) unreadable by any progam except the Nikon software.
Nikon has discontinued Nikon Transfer (as a standalone program) and it is now embedded as part of Nikon View NX2. The embedded program is what you want.
You need to remove Nikon Transfer from your system, update Nikon View NX2 and then set up the embedded Nikon Transfer 2.0 which is found within View NX2. This transfer program will work properly.
Or just use a different transfer program or get the files on your hard drive one way or another (copy & paste, etc.).

There is a problem with Nikon Transfer, you need to use the new Nikon Transfer that is in the latest edition of View NX. Top left side of the Nikon View screen click on Transfer.
You should have had the new Nikon View NX cd with your D800.

I need to recover D800 NEFs corrupted by Nikon Transfer 1.5.3.
I have these files backed-up, but unfortunately, they were originally copied using Nikon Transfer. Just like @ckcarr's experience, viewnx reports my files size as 1632x1080.
I really need those files ... any help would be highly appreciated.

It depends if it's just the embedded JPEG that's been corrupted, or the entire RAW data is lost. I'd find it hard to believe that Nikon Transfer would completely damage the full RAW data. First, there's no such thing as 1632x1080 RAW. If that's what you get, it's most likely the embedded JPEG.
If you open with an application like Windows/Apple's built-in viewer, then you're going to get the embedded JPEG displayed. But if you use a RAW converter, you should get the full resolution, unless somehow your RAW data (the Bayer pixels) themselves are corrupt.
Try to use Lightroom, or download Photoshop CS6 Beta, and see what you get. How large are your files? If they're 50-75MB, then you probably still have everything in there, except the embedded JPEG is 1632x1080.
