Wayne, after looking at LC's shots, how do you think the 17mm TSE would hold up against the zeiss 15mm ?

Wayne, with the Hartblei using Zeiss glass, do you really think they'll produce a Zeiss-branded TS?

Well, Hartblei (the former west Germany version) only has 40, 80 and 120 T/S lenses using Zeiss MF glass.
The 40 is equivalent to 32mm for 35mm if i remember correctly, so they don't have a product near 17mm or even 24mm.
Zeiss has done PC lenses like the Contax 35PC so I don't know why they couldn't do a ultrawide angle PC lens.
I could only see cost being the limiting issue of such a lens.
They even have somewhere the fabled Schuster 25mm PC lens design they could dust off.Drool!!!

Ok, I just looked at the Zeiss websites MTF's which show the new 15 having some heavy field curvature going on in the corners similar to the recent 25/2. I thought I was seeing some non-uniform sharpness across the frame into the corners with some of LC's shots but it was hard to be sure. I look forward to hearing about LC's usual planar Church wall shots at all apertures series to confirm that the lens has some field curvature affecting the borders and corners and thus making it not so good for planar type architecture shots. I know the TS-17 is very sharp across the frame into the corners at f7.1/f8 with no field curvature and very low distortion. The zeiss 15 will probably have very slightly better color. Both I think have low CA. You can also use a 95mm polarizer with the zeiss if you want, can not with the 17.
I too would like to see the 15 compared side by side with TS-E 17 and the 14-24G.
I am sure LC will do this.

@Wayne: Did you check out the MTF charts on this page: http://diglloyd.com/blog/2012/20120316_1-Zeiss15Distagon.html ? He has a series of f/2.8-4-5.6-8-11 and they don't show the field curvature seen in the official PDF. I wonder if he got these charts from Dr. Nasse, since he mentions "Still in preparation is the writeup of my interview on the development of the 15/2.8, with Dr. Hubert Nasse."

The f/5.6 chart reminds me suspiciously of the one of the Z*21, except it drops off way before the corner.

Yep, not sure which one is the correct one.
The 5.6 mtf on Zeiss site drops off severely at the corners like 25/2 graph.
I hope Zeiss site is wrong, LC's look much better.

Hmm, too rich for my blood, but the samples look pretty good. Looking forward to seeing a comparison to the Nikon 14-24, but given the pricing here I'm unlikely to swap that lens for the new Zeiss.

The MTF-figures on his site do not match those on the Zeiss-website.

The f/5.6 graph is a copy of the Distagon 25/2 f/4 graph. My quick search did not locate any other source for the f/2.8 MTF graph. Quite sloppy!

Just e-mailed Zeiss and asked them to look into the problem. This lens, no doubt, must be far Far worse than the Samyang 14mm.

"It will be available from May for an MSRP of: €2,148 or US$2,948."

Well, it seems my estimate of $2995 was pretty much on target.

Great to see definitive proof that the Zeiss provided MTF for the brochure is wrong. I'm guessing Lloyd's MTF are the true MTF plots, in which case they're amazing.

Just read the comments about Zeiss glass and this new lens on DPreview ..... there's an incredble amount of loathing towards Zeiss.

I did not realize to what extent that Zeiss (and Leica) stir up such negative emotions in people!

Yeah, after seeing Jorge's shots I definitely think this lens renders well across the frame and don't see any field curvature which agrees with the LC MTF's. It looks like an excellent lens design. The only thing I can criticize is theseemingly lower microcontrast and lower than usual high freq MTF sag & tag lines. Would be nice to see side by side with 21 to confirm this.
Excellent color as usual. This looks much better than the 18, maybe they could redesign that one to this level of performance.

Jorge, these look the same mtf's as the ones on the Zeiss website which we think are wrong.
We think the ones on Lloyd Chamber's site (Diglloyd) are the correct ones.

i guess it's better than no front filter.

It's going to be a real shame, having to take a hacksaw to that built-in lens hood to get access to the filter threads...

Yes, that is very sad indeed. Just try and start a discussion about Zeiss on Dpreview and you will get many hostile reactions. I am not sure where it comes from, but I guess it has to do with Zeiss being a third party lens maker that introduces some real competition with Nikon and Canon. The more traditional third parties mostly deliver less quality than Nikon or Canon, so there is no need for arguments. Just my 2 cents.

Owning the ZF 21/2.8, 35/2, 50/2 and 100/2 this new 15/2.8 is very tempting. I skipped the 25/2 (to close to the 21/2.8 and of inferior quality compared to the 21/2.8) and the 35/1.4 (no real arguments to replace the 35/2), but I think I will buy this 15/2.8. As far as I can see it now it is in the same league (if not better) than the 21/2.8. And that is a fantastic achievement of Zeiss.

Yep, that's fine. Less chance then of these lenses turning into mass produced, consumer grade, plastic trinkets like Canon and Nikon lenses.

I agree too about this being a very tempting addition to my lineup. $3k is a little steep, but I may end up skipping the 25 f/2 as well which would help.
