This "walkabout" thing is probably not the same for all of us. Those of you that don't mind weight, are you walking around the block, or what? I'm talking about 5-10 km walks for a couple of hours a day.

I have been know to walk for 6-8 hrs if I'm new to a city with full frame DSLR and Zeiss ZE glass. Yes, it can be tiring but to me, it's a feeling of accomplishment at the end of the day (Kind of like a good day of skiing on the slopes).

Subjects might have a say.

Even with the 5n, you see a difference in response between an RF and the 70400g I've been carting around.

Walkabout has to imply portablity vs image quality almost by default.

Another wildcard is the new 5D, which should up the ante image wise.

And the GXR truely is the superior RF option---but not as versitile overall.

Life is full of comprimises

I have a long comment. Please feel free to ignore it. As you've probably guessed from my nom, I'm a lawyer. My job is to prevent BS technical legalistic things from affecting my clients in the real world. Because of that, I've developed a sense for when people are getting overly technical on non-legal matters as well. I'm probably not the only one of you who has this; i've found many small business people have it as well.

I am not certain I agree with uhoh7 regarding 5d image quality. At a pixel-level rendering? Perhaps. But in a print? At what size? 20 x 30? Larger? I think that this is what Philber was trying to get at. Despite the innumerable discussions on this forum comparing 100% crops, what really matters is what is communicated by the medium. I am minded of a recent review comparing the 5dmkii to the mamiya 6 in which the 5d fared well up to 30 inch prints. I'd venture to bet the nex 7 would do as well.

In these discussions we're referring to the images created by each camera as if the ones we prefer are more realistic. But that's false. The images are simply images created on a digital sensor that are then imperfectly duplicated on the taker's screen and edited. That image and those edits are then passed on to the rest of us for viewing. Each of us will see it differently, not only because our computer screens are calibrated differently (have any of you compared PC and Mac screens?) but also because each of us perceives colors differently and also which color group a color should be described as falling into. Many men have yellow-orange and green-blue color blindness, I do not. Nevertheless, my wife (who is a graphic designer by training) and I have argued on many occasions whether a cheese should be described as yellow or orange, or whether a color is green or blue.

Please forgive my long.digression it goes to this point, i.e. what we are discussing is not whether a camera is better or worse at something (although a purple corner is clearly worse), but must instead be categorized as personal preferences.

Any difference that can only be shown through 100% crops is not real-world meaningful and should, instead be categorized as rooting for a sports team.--and the 5d mk II is the Yankees.

Purple magenta corners are undesirable now.

A Instamatic filter and Lightroom preset five years from now!

I wonder how long until we start talking about the purple fringing capabilities of each lens and each sensor?

One man's deficiency is another man's artistic impression! Same can be said with lens falloff.

another thing "walkabout" implies is wide angle.

The nex crop amputates wide angles unless you are willing to cart around a sigma 8-16, which punishes portablity.

philber, do you know for the price of the WATE, you could just get an M9, which to my mind, murders both cameras for a walkabout.

Used they commonly go for 5k now.

And they are 10 times sexier than either camera as well

One feature that makes a real-world difference to me is focus magnification. Manual focus is significantly more accurate for static objects than autofocus. Manual focus on the Nex is much easier on the Nex with focus magnification through the EVF than on the 5D, resulting in more keepers. Hence, for me, the Nex is a better camera.

Agree about it's portability, which is the reason that I'm testing a 10-20, which is quite portable.

Uhoh7, I thhought about getting a Leica M9. I am not going down that road for a numbe rof reasons. One is that it doesn't do close-ups, let alone macro. Another is that wide angles require a special viewfinder. More importantly, Leica pics require quite a lot of PP, something I am loath to do and not good at. Lastly, and a total deal-breaker, is that much more expert shooters than I have had to send their equipment back to Leica in Germany for calibration. Boris had to sens one lens 3 times. That is definitely a no-no for me.
That said, I haven't bought the WATE yet either. It is still sitting on the shelf as we speak...
Ideally, I will try my forthcoming 24mm Elmar, and see how it compares with the 21mm position of the WATE, and buy the better of the two...

The 50mm (or equivalent FL) has always been the ultimate walkabout lens since Oskar Barnack days. It was used almost exclusively by HC Bresson.

That's cause your're strange

BTW is that baby here yet?

You are going to walk all around a city with no wide angle in your pocket? You take an EFL of 43 or more and that's it?

But looking at the first post it looks like philber does just have one lens.

The zm18

Well it really proves my point anyway about the crop anyway. On the M9 you could get the same FOV with a 28 cron or elmarit or zm28, all way more versitile than the f/4.5 zm18.

There's lots here. In fact the M9 is very tough. You can use zm if you do not like leica. Viewfinder is not much compared to dealing with 5D bulk.

Close ups....75/2? oh wait you mght have to send it back........OK zeiss 85/2? You may not be close but it will look like it.

PP...well they seem to deal with it. Don't you shoot raw anyway?

But the M9 is the least distracting camera to people by far and the most charming. That and the FF are priceless really.

Yes, I love to walk around 'new' cities for hours on end. I can go an entire day with barely a stop for food. And I find it only gets tiring when the photography stops. This is one reason why it is difficult for me to go on walks with non-photographers. Inevitably we end up in some shop or mall and suddenly the 10lb bag feels like 100! At least with a GXR/NEX or Leica kit it isn't as bad and I might even continue to do photos in the shops because it feels less conspicuous and I just look like some tourist, which often I am.

This is what we do on vacation, but the stops to entertain the little one is when the bag gets heavy.

Hi, Charlie. Our first baby just arrived a little over a week ago, and we're exhausted! Thanks for asking. He's doing great.

Yep, 50mm equiv. has always been my go-to walk around lens. 35mm and 50mm tend to be the two most common for this kind of thing, generally, but obviously everyone has their own fave. Your 42mm is a nice middle ground between the two. I believe sebboh likes to walk around with around a 65-75mm equiv.

Doug, congrats on the little one. For now you will be able to shoot with MF, for about six months, but after that look for fast AF
