Douglas: that was funny!
Now, talking about walk-around kits:
I have a used NEX 5N, EVF, Hawk's adapter, and one of those MS optical 35/3.5 Perar lenses on the way (I hope mine's sharp across the frame!); and I have a GXR-M, with a bunch of CV lenses. I find the ergonomics of the GXR excellent, as is the configurability, but its EVF is anti-ergonomics, for me. When I travel, I keep the finder separate from the GXR.
I want to run the NEX and the GXR side-by-side for a while, using the Perar. For me, 50mm EFOV is the most versatile focal length, so the Perar will do there. I just want to use both to see which works best with that one lens; which works best on a neck strap; whether they can be used easily without the finder, etc. As well, it might be that the 5N's finder will be more ergonomic.
For images I make while traveling, I am not so much interested in ultimate IQ, but whether I will actually be carrying a camera. Not that the IQ of the GXR is not great; I have been shooting interiors for work with one and the clients have been very happy (the CV 12 is, for me, simply amazingly good). But I have found that, if there's any reason not to pick it up and take it out the door (like needing to take the EVF off to get it in a jacket pocket, for example) then often leave it in the room. Not good!
The reason I did not get a NEX 7 (with its built-in finder, one of the big boxes is ticked, for sure) but the edge problems with the UWAs that people have been talking about has put me off. Of course, it might end up that I get a NEX 7 just for this lens, and keep the GXR for work.
Douglas, congrats on the kiddie, too; looking forward to the pics

Ha, thanks everyone! Charlie, not only is everything smeared over here, but the little guy's extremities seem to have some purple shift.
Haha, when my daughter came out, her head was covered with black hair so thick that I thought she was black for a minute or two, which is odd because both my girlfriend and I are white Then the purple bits started coming out and I breathed a sigh of relief, before getting all concerned and whispering to the midwife if it was normal that she was purple. I mean, she was deep purple, and all over. After 1/2 hour or so it was mostly gone though, so no purple baby either

Douglas that's great, congrats! Our second son was, ironically, due last week but he has his own timetable apparently. Should be here literally any minute!

Uhoh7, I thhought about getting a Leica M9. I am not going down that road for a numbe rof reasons. One is that it doesn't do close-ups, let alone macro. Another is that wide angles require a special viewfinder. More importantly, Leica pics require quite a lot of PP, something I am loath to do and not good at. Lastly, and a total deal-breaker, is that much more expert shooters than I have had to send their equipment back to Leica in Germany for calibration. Boris had to sens one lens 3 times. That is definitely a no-no for me.
That said, I haven't bought the WATE yet either. It is still sitting on the shelf as we speak...
Ideally, I will try my forthcoming 24mm Elmar, and see how it compares with the 21mm position of the WATE, and buy the better of the two......Show more →

Congratulations Douglas.
These are the golden years of family photography - until they are 10 or 11 or 12 years old, you'll be able to make photographs of your child(ren) almost whenever you want. My sons (twelve and fifteen) are somewhat less willing than they used to be but not to the point of totally frustrating me. On the other hand now I get requests for blog profile photos and imagery for projects. Whatever, it's all good.

Might as well buy the 24mm right now. The Wate cannot compare to Leica's newest prime design's, but I'll bet that you already know that. For 24mm, NEX, I would stay with the native zeiss...

So WTF are doing here? Shouldn't you be devoting all your attention somewhere else?

Well, she's not in actual labor yet. I guess I shouldn't have said "any minute". I suspect sometime within the next 24-48 hours. Everything is sort of on hold with our lives until this little guy shows up. So hey, if I'm sitting around waiting, I'm going to be posting!

Hi, Charlie. Our first baby just arrived a little over a week ago, and we're exhausted! Thanks for asking. He's doing great.
Yep, 50mm equiv. has always been my go-to walk around lens. 35mm and 50mm tend to be the two most common for this kind of thing, generally, but obviously everyone has their own fave. Your 42mm is a nice middle ground between the two. I believe sebboh likes to walk around with around a 65-75mm equiv.
congrats douglas!!! you should probably try to document a lot with photos as sleep deprivation will wipe away any memories of the first few weeks/months.
and yes, ~70mm (equiv) is my preferred walk around as it is my favorite focal length for both landscapes and portraits. i do usually also carry a 35mm as well, i just don't use it much. i also like 42mm for social events and size considerations, and as compromise when i can only take one lens and think i might need wider for some reason. i actually really tend to dislike photos (even famous ones) taken with lenses wider than 28mm, so the NEX-7 will probably be a good fit for me.

not for another year at least maybe 2, toddlers are slow. maybe never, NEX autofocus is pretty slow too...

Andrew
Andrew, do you have specific experience of both lenses, and, if yes, where is the difference? Also, I am a little bit careful with the Elmar 24 on the NEX 7, where problems have been reported. But, as I have not seen actual pictures, I don't know if the problem is easily fixable, a la ZM 18, or not.

Philippe, have you read this? http://blog.kasson.com/?p=1280 Seems the Elmar has purple shift but is fixable. From his crops, edges look to be sharp. Might be worth poking around his blog. I spent a bit of time reading some of his posts yesterday and my recollection is that the Elmar will work OK but will need Cornerfix.
