p.2 #1 · What is better than a Zeiss 21mm F2.8 and A850?

Some interesting ideas here -- but I have to agree that I don't think you're going to find the perfect lens that approaches the ZF21. That's a high bar.

I've seen samples from the CV 15 on the NEX-7 that suggest Corner Fix will take care of it -- the problem may largely be limited to color shift, rather than smearing.

I think then a possible compromise would be to only use the NEX-7 and ZA 24mm F1.8 in the towns and populated areas. Probably mostly covered in a rain proof bag.

Only break out the giant camera and tripod when in non-populated areas for landscapes.

Not quite what I hoped but perhaps not avoidable.

I also have a C3 which I will be bringing with me. But I really prefer to have 24mpx.

The ZM 18 is only 28mm though. Ie kit lens perspective. :P

Keep in mind tha you're likely not going to reap a ton of benefit in prints with 24mp over 16mp if you don't use a tripod, which, of course, adds to size. Getting the CV 15 for your C3 is a cheap fix with great results.

Oh, you will be taking an 8x10?

Seriously, it's funny to hear the word "giant" associated with a 35 SLR.

Hmm, I've found that with WA, if I can keep the aperture at F8 and the shutter above 1/60, I can get very sharp shots no matter the mpx but I use long range shooting techniques and find something to lean on.

+1 I have to agree. With a wide angle and fast shutter speed (preferably faster than 1/60), I have never had an issue with tack sharp images from the a900.

Your thread title is "What is better than a Zeiss 21mm F2.8 and A850?", and this is what you come up with?
Thread content and intent do not match the title.

Heh, it's the only wide angle that seems viable on the NEX-7 right now besides maybe a WATE.

Well, the CV15, mentioned already on this thread, is not so bad. You do need Cornerfix, but other than that… Not at the Zeiss 21 level, but then the Sigma is not, either!

I'd like to see some corner crops on it for near and far objects.

Anyone know how big the Nikon 14mm f2.8 is vs the 21mm zeiss? It seems to be about the same weight.

Opinions will vary, according to people's take on the facts of the matter:

Samyang 14/2.8 length: 3.8 inches, weight: 530 grams
Zeiss 21/2.8 (ZF) length: 3.35 inches, weight: 600 grams

I'd say Fly has a case. The Samyang is similarly huge at the front end.

I apologize, I am obviously misinformed about the Samyang.

IBIS helps alot for that...

I actually found that with IBIS turned off, I got slightly better results (tack sharp vs just sharp) at faster shutter speeds. IBIS I think makes sense at 1/60 and slower where you have less chance for tack sharp results. But that was just my experience with the A900.

I thought IBIS shuts off above certain speeds?

Hmm, not sure. I just tested the feature many years ago when I first received my a900 and that's what I found. Perhaps there were other variables. I just made a habit of turning off IBIS unless I knew I needed it (slow speeds, long lenses and so forth).

Edit: Thinking about it more, in order for it to shut off and still be useful, it would have to shut off at different shutter speeds for different lenses. Slower speeds for wides, faster speeds for tele's. It could do that since it does have that info through the mount but I don't know the definitive answer. Does it in fact choose to shut off at say 1/250 sec. when using say a 200mm lens but shut off at 1/60 when using a 21mm? I don't know.

I think I remember reading on DYXUM it either shuts off or above a certain SS, its not a factor because the SS is faster than IBIS can react any way.

Nope, SSS only shuts off when you turn it off. A lot of users do shut it off when using higher shutter speeds, though, because they believe that it can have a negative affect (never tested it, myself.)

I wasn't saying that you can't shoot sharp pics handheld with 24mp. I'm just saying that, shoot both the 16 and 24 mp cameras handheld together and print them, and the difference may not be as much as you think.

I guess I've never done a shot for shot comparison but my 24mpx 16x20 prints look far nicer than my 16mpx 16x20 prints.

I have no idea how people say there isn't a difference, its extremely blatantly obvious to me.
