Assuming the examples from the D800 show the state of the art that Canon can aspire to, then I want less pixels than that.
+1000.
Kudos to Sony for the high overall image quality of the D800.
Noise at the pixel-level, though, is comparable to crop cameras ... and this is not what I'm after for my next purchase.

5D is not a birding/wildlife/sport camera and was never marketed as one!!! No pro sport photographer uses 5DII as his dedicated sport cam!
If Canon comes up with anything significantly less than 36 (e.g. less than 30) I think they're going to see a lot of people switching to Nikon. And if they really have a death wish they'll give us 18mpx again and tell us that's all we need. Just my opinion of course, I'm sure for many photographers 18mpx really is all they need (or want). But for me fps is unimportant, massively high iso is unimportant, super-fast autofocus is unimportant, just give me more and better mpx.

It's unlikely that many will switch.
However, many may decide to wait rather than buy the 5DIII.
So, Canon may need to discount the 5DIII – just like it had to discount the 40D and 50D after the D300 was released.

I find it very curious that Canon stayed so low in resolution with the 1Dx. This leaves the door WIDE open for a high resolution camera at some point in time. This will either be a 5DIII, or some mythical "3D" that folks have been wishing for the past 5 years.
Either way, some big megapixel camera is coming from Canon sooner rather than later.

A lot of **noobs**?
I can't see a pro switching just because he didn't get his wish of a few more MPs. I mean, not many switched even when D700 showed a much better AF than 5DII. Nor many switched from a 12mp D700 to a 21mp 5DII.
Considering the amount of wedding photographers out there, they will unlikely switch as they need the high ISO and they don't need 36mp.
I can't even imagine how long it would take to sort through 2000-4000 36mp RAW files and then edit them.
Haha, well, then maybe finally wedding prices will go up as after spending 6 months on editing they won't be able to afford to charge $1000 for a wedding anymore

There is no need to export uncompressed TIFF images from LR in any higher resolution than you want for that particular job.
Thanks for telling me what to do with my PP workflow, but I believe that will not help much. Besides why would you buy 36mpx camera and don't use full resolutions? Just in case? I will stay with 16mpx fine than.

I am just an amateur I edit one file at a time do not have that much files, don't use LR.
I am too and I see no reason to go beyond 20mpx for amateur. Actually, based on your hardware profile I wouldn't say so, please keep buying that will help my Canon stocks!!!

Agree. Especially considering the rumors that the 5DIII will not have a high-MP count either.
One possibility is that Canon is planning to merge the 7D and 5D lines into the 5DX, which will be an 'affordable', general purpose FF camera with 18mp and 7fps.
And that later they are planning to also release the mythical "3D" - with 1-series features and 30+ megapixels.

Maybe, although I think you have the 3D and 5D3 mixed up since the EOS 3 was the full speed ahead, top AF mini-pro body.
