Ok Nikon has dropped the MP bomb on Canon and some are already predicting Canon's death. So what do people really want to see in the 5D mk III? I've given ranges rather than a specific MP count, to smooth out variations.
Personally I'd be happy with option 2 or 3, but above all I want the overall response and speed of camera greatly improved and brand new AF. I don't want to see 30MP+ at all.
I didn't give an option for a low pixel count like 12-16MP as IMO that will never, ever, happen; we've moved on and I think the performance of the 18MP sensor will be more than good enough for those that want a blend of low noise, detail, file size etc
21-24 for me, but more importantly I want a kick ass AF system in it. Actually, I'd be happy with a 1DX shoved into a 5D sized body with half the frame rate and half the price, but I don't think I'll be getting that
Mid 20's for me, though I'd take more and shoot mRAW or sRAW for most wedding related jobs. 30+ for macro and wildlife would be pretty excellent, but I don't need it. AF and high ISO performance are far more important to me.
As many as I can get, with the same or better ISO performance. The D800 looks like a fabulous camera, coupled with the 14-24 it makes it very tempting for the landscape photographer.
Happy with present pixel count. Want more pixels only if noise, contrast, tonal smoothness improve too. I don't expect that to happen, so if improvements are fungible between pixel count and other picture improvements, bring on the other picture improvements. If I could have ISO 400 as clean in low light as ISO 200 is now in good light, then that would be a happy day. With the right lenses, technique, and subject matter, 5D II can (sometimes) enlarge to 40-inch prints now. Giving me enough pixels to enlarge to 60 inches, only to show the noise better seems pointless.
Increasing mpx will not add anything to my mostly web size shots. More mpx's would need new computer and tons of space to process such huge files. No way, 16mpx would be perfect for me.
D800 will need beast of a system. My new computer I'm building after Ivy Bridge ships will be 32GB, and I will OC it to 4.5GHz and be using SSD for main drive. This should handle whatever is announced for 5D III.
The one reason a 30MP+ 5D III would be nice if it has the pro AF (AF @ f/8) and say 8 fps, it'll mean I can sell 5D II and 7D and use the one camera for everything from landscape to fast action wildlife and sports. No need for high MP crop camera any more IMO.
25.6MP with a much weaker AA filter would be my ideal at the moment. If you can't get good detail from that with some of the glass now available, 36MP won't help much. Already 5D II can get excellent detail with good glass.

+1 But I don't think Canon can or will ignore Nikon so I suspect it'll be 30+
