With the recent Canon offerings (wide angle primes with IS?) and now this killer D800 from Nikon Canon really is blowing it.
Shouldn't we know what the 5d3 specs are before we state that Canon is "blowing it"? Nikon and Canon always leapfrog each other. Why is everyone so scared of the D800? Canon made a huge move combining the 1D and 1Ds lines into the 1Dx. I'm sure the 1Dx and 5d3 will be comparable to the D4 and D800. Don't get your shorts all bunched up.

Ask yourself this: Would you say Nikon gives their users everything for nothing? If so, then yes...that is what I expect.
I don't disagree with you here either. I honestly think the differences between D700 and 5D2 were overplayed. The 5D2 had a BETTER center AF point, but shit outter points. The D700 had good points all around. However, the 5D2 had better resolution and other factors. So I could look at the two and be like, well the choice is more lens system (or video).
However, seeing how the D700 and D3 series Nikons still sold incredibly well and Nikon didn't tank, and seeing how Canon had worked with the different "categories" over the years, but they didn't tank either, I think Canon is going to smell the coffee soon.
Right now, I think we are jumping to conclusions a little bit early, BUT don't get me wrong, if Canon doesn't fire back an answer for the D800 soon...well, I think a lot of people will switch.
Man, if the D800 had 8FPS, (not sure if it had dual slots), I'd be all over it. Shit, at 3600 bucks (including grip) I'll be in 2 new bodies for less than 2 used 1DIVs or 1DX's.
However, I'm going to hold out hope and see what comes my way. I'm definitely going to hold off on the 24-70, just as long as the body announcements take.
I need at least 8FPS, at least 16MP, and dual slots. ISO 6400 and up is also high on the list. damn good AF in there and I'm set. Flash Commander is a plus, and micro adjust is too.

It has CLS commander, MA, allegedly better AF than the D3, CF+SD slots (so same as 1D4), plenty of resolution. Only falls a little on FPS.
I doubt Canon won't have an appropriate response. They're a successful business, odds are they're not completely stupid

Now I would say it is the first time that Nikon got a step ahead over Canon since I follow DSLRs.
No "Me too" no "Hell, we need something to be able to compete!"
That is a great step and will be a great success. It is second time, too that a Nikon is not more expensive than its competitor from Canon. Here there even is no competitor.
I say now: 1D X might be all I need and there still and again is no competitor. But Canon failed in pricing.
That is what a fanboy says now.

Was f/8 AF confirmed? If so you can tack that on the list as well...

Not quite. Being as how English is a fairly fluid and dynamic language, the phrase "I could care less" has evolved a connotation of "I couldn't care less".
People often use the former phrase because it lacks a hard stop (it's easier to say) with the implied meaning of the latter phrase. Naturally, much of the time people type just as they would speak.
I don't start CAPS LOCKing my refutations to it, but the phrase "It made me nauseous" is my pet peeve...So what, you've become such that you make others 'nauseated'?

I have stated before that I have shot Canon for 46 years and I really like the glass Canon offers but they seem to be off track with their body development.
I have watched the leap frogging over the years with Nikon and I have stayed on board knowing that it would swing around again but the gap is starting to get too big.
Yes my current arsenal works just fine but I'm always interested in something better and it has nothing to do with how good a photographer I may be but rather staying competitive in the market place for my customer's sake and mine.
Artsupreme has a point about the fact that Nikon has two generations of the D700 and now D800 with features found in their Pro line and Canon has yet to introduce any camera with these features except their Pro line. I simply don't understand why Canon continues to follow this trend and I'm not the only long time user that is getting fed up.

I don't see anyone scared by the D800...maybe a little bit of envy, but not scared.

"If you want pro features, buy a 1D series"
"5DII AF is perfectly sufficient for the price point"
"If you want a FF body with pro AF then buy a 1DSIII and stop complaining!!!"
"If you think you could ever get the best AF in a compact body for 3K you are dreaming!!!"
"You want a 6K camera for 3K, (hahaahaha) you are dreaming!!!"
This list could go on for days....3+ years of this bullshit.
So you had a MP argument against the D700, but what now?
Well, let's hope Canon FINALLY delivers a body that's not intentionally crippled!...Show more →
Exactly, they said the whiners were crazy nuts wanting everything for nothing and complaining over nothing and that something like the D800 would be insane even in alternate realities and yet here it is.... we knew it was coming, all it took with to remove the fanboy glasses to see it 100% clearly a few years ago already.
When the 5D II came out and Canon users were like "WTF, why are all my outer points like sh*t " ; then the defenders of Canon said either "If you want a pro body, get the 1D series; don't expect pro AF in a 5D series" or "5D II it's not a wedding/event camera, it's more a landscape/studio camera".
Here's what I don't get:
With Nikon, if you want a small body with FF sensor with accurate AF, high ISO and decent resolution you have the D700. (weddings & all round stuff)
If you want a tough pro body, FF sensor, accurate & fast AF, high ISO and decent resolution you have the D3 (weddings, sports, etc)
If you want a pro body , FF sensor, accurate, & fast AF, high ISO and BIG resolution, you got the 3DX ( can do pretty much anything).
Add the D3S, D800, D4 to this ecuation and you end up with QUITE a few choice to choose from, regardless the KIND/TYPE of photographer you are (landscape/wedding/events/sports/hobbiest)
Now when we said "why isn't there a Canon D700", you can't really give an honest answer.
Canon got away with that ONCE; with crippling the 5D series. (my opinion it was actually TWICE, because the 5D was crippled at the beginning with the 5Dc , same AF issue).
Do they REALLY think they can sh*t on us again?
I know that big companies like Canon look at the bigger picture (as in PROFIT) not customer survey.... but me on the other hand...i don't CARE about their marketing, about their INCOME or about their STRATEGY.
All I care is that I might end up with several L lenses along the road and find myself with no BODY to attach them to .
Why should I be forced to switch sides (and go Nikon) instead of keeping my hard earned L lenses and ask Canon for some decency?

....except that when stated with ironic tone of voice it is considered to be correct even by quite a few picky masters of grammar and that the implied ironic tone is allowed for when written out even by, if hardly all, picky masters of grammar.

Really? Of all the things going on in this thread you've chosen that to pick out and misrepresent? Surprise!
Correct grammar - millions of Americans doing it wrong.

Let's be honest, anyone who's ever used the 35L, 50L, 85L, and 135L is switching to Nikon any time soon.
We have full frame options...
Well i have the 24L II, 50 1.4 and 135L......and i'm NOT thinking to switch to Nikon......but If I were obsessed like these fanboy dudes are, I would really WONDER to what canon body would I attach these lenses to have decent AF....and other stuff that nikon is offering....

I'm confident that Canon will make us happy very soon.
Poor M Vers. Nothing inteligent to add and strong denial of the fact. Perhaps we could raise some money for him - as is the custom for the "slow" and and apparently disadvantaged among us is society?
