If Canon releases a 18MP replacement for the 5DII, some heads are gonna roll.
An 18mp 5DII replacement wouldn't be a dumb move in its own, if it had pro AF, no pro AF, its DOA. Basically with this package, the gauntlet is really down and yea Canon really better bring it.

Not to be a kill joy, but that youtube vid showing the 51-point AF was really misleading...$2 says a split second later the stupid 51-point 3-d tracking mode would have jumped focus to the flowers just behind the butterfly.
I loved my D700 but the 51-point mode could be frustrating.
That said, the D800 looks awesome, though a bit disappointing Nikon held the DX fps to only 6 and that requiring their expensive grip, though I realize they cant hurt D4 sales too much.
Just think though...at 8 fps or so, they would make some potential 1DX buyers pause.
You could have a landscape BEAST at 36MP with no AA, then slap on a grip and start shooting a very respectable 15 MP sports at 8fps.
Ten again, it remains to be seen how good per-pixel the camera is, so the DX crop mode might be bunk.

IMHO Canon must have operatives working at Nikon - and I would be very surprised if Canon doesn't come out with a high MP camera, maybe not exactly 36MP, but close enough.

6 FPS is more then enough for some of us. Plus the FPS goes up in Dx and 1.2 crop mode.

I still believe it will be 32MPish, 6fps, between 7D and 1DX AF and not the 22MP, 7.5fps, 1DX AF claim on CR/Aquatech. Due to various reasons.
And yet another various reason for my thoughts is this new quote from DPR "Ultimately, the most interesting thing about these launches is the fact that Canon feels the need to update various full-frame lenses, almost as if something likely to test the quality of its existing versions was in the offing."
(If it turns out to be 18MP, 5fps, crippled 7D AF then I think the goings on at Canon might be enough to make Vlad the Impaler turn pale.)

Well, looks like this is the long, long rumored Sony 30+ map chip that has been floating round the inter web for a year now. I highly doubt the 5d is going to be an 18 mp body. The no aa filter is really tempting.

But man that D800 looks impressive (although their whole you need a battery pack for more fps seems a bit silly).
(This why the whiners here have been whining all over the place the last few years, so Canon gets with it and stops resting on their laurels. Hopefully they have listened to us and not the Canon apologists [who said D800 specs would be insane to hope for].)

If the D800e's sales takes off, Canon will feel the pressure to offer the AA filter removal option as well.

As some have noted those sample photos are from July! Nikon seems to have lost a lot of time as a result of the floodings in Thailand.
It's remarkable that Canon and Nikon are now for the first time in "real" competition. Before they shunned competition by focussing on different features. The D800 is an obvious attack on the reign of the 5D mark II. On the pro camera front Canon has gone after Nikon.

It's priced at $2995! As I kinda thought it's not much higher than a D700. Kinda feel sorry for those folks that just bought a D700. Ouch! Yeah go ahead and be in denial.

How about those who bought a D3X. Nikon should offer those an option to trade it in for the D800.

Press release (not fake): "Canon has announced that its Japanese president Tsuneji Uchida will step down, with his role taken by the current CEO, Fujio Mitarai. "
(not saying this is in any way related to anything here, but all the same it just kinda fit your joke)

The only reason not to completely abandon Canon right now is the 17 TSE. Otherwise Nikon blows the doors off of Canon in too many ways for me to list here right now.

Lemme guess. You are a Nikonian that lives under the shadow of Canon shooters and finally you have something to write home about for Nikon.
Welcome to the world of high resolution photography.

Welcome to the world of high resolution photography. Pfffft. Sensors are still way too small in DSLRs. Get a real sensor!
Before you comment, yes the view from up here looks pretty good.
