p.1 #1 · Why I hate my Epson 3880

My Epson 3880 eats paper. The display says it is printing but it just stops with the paper inside. I hurt my back unpacking it at the end of December and so B&H gave me until the end of January to return it. Thinking that it was just too much pain to return it, and since the outside box was ruined in shipping I was hoping it would be OK. But now it is past time to return it and it is eating the paper again. Aside from that I think the dynamic range somewhat sucks.

Seems like you have no choice but to call them back and work something out.

Try Tecco gloss or lustre paper, and then print from Qimage with profiles, your Epson 3880 is one of the best printers at any price.

p.1 #6 · Why I hate my Epson 3880

I've already talked to B&H and Epson. Just packing it up is too much and I can't find a box big enough to put the Epson box in. UPS store said they wanted $100 to make a big box and pack it up. I thought Epson had a place where I could bring it in, but after confirming with them, it is only for repair, not drop off. After my careful calibration profile of the ultra premium Glossy paper, with a head cleaning first, I finally got so so prints. Did a careful calibration of the Ultra Prem Lustre paper next. Just examined the Ultra Prem Lustre print, which got stuck in the printer, and the 25% that did print is purple toned. That's how the glossy one was before head cleaning. Not every print sticks. This one was an 8 x 10 photo and 2, 4 x 6 prints also got stuck prior. Calibrating and re-calibrating after head cleaning is so wasteful. I think this printer is 10/7 and I don't want another one. I think I want to wait and get a 4900 on sale and prepare my office for the small car sized printer, instead. Sorry for my rant.

Something is definitely wrong with your printer. I have feed many many types of paper through my 3800 and then 3880. Even canvas (which it is not suppose to do) without as much as a hesitation. You should not need a box for your printer to send it back to Epson. I had to return my 3800 under warranty years ago...and unless their policy has changed......you give them your credit card number...then they send you a new printer. You unpack it and pack your old printer in the same box and packing. You then send it back to Epson....as long as you do this in less then 2 weeks your card is not charged. Simple as that......sorry you had problems...but it can happen to anyone. I guess it would be possible for manufactures to avoid any problem printers....but then I don`t think any of us could afford a printer like this......
Best of lick....Peter

p.1 #8 · Why I hate my Epson 3880

The Epson 4900 is a production printer....and if you are not going to print a lot......I mean a lot. Then it will probably cause you more problems then you want to deal with. The 3880 is a very good printer and has a reputation of very seldom clogging. If you are not doing production printing I would stick with it. I have had a lot of Epson printers (running a 7890 and a 3880 right now) and the 3800 and 3880 have been the most reliable printers I have ever owned by any company. So I think you must just have a lemon....give them another try. One thing I would also recommend is.....tell them you want another new printer....insist on this. Tell them you do not want a refurbished one. I have herd many people do fine with the refurbished printers....but I would insist on a new one.
Again...best of luck...Peter

The 3880 has been very good for me. It sounds like yours may have been damaged in shipping.

Thanks everyone for your input. I also don't like the surface of the prints. My R1800 prints were nice and smooth and the 3880 has bumps or looks like the print has a ink texture to it.

p.1 #13 · Why I hate my Epson 3880

I'm another one who is VERY happy with my 3800, not a jam, clog, nothing in two years. Wonderful printer, Epson and B&H should be able to make it right, it's under warranty, return it and get a new one.

"Thanks everyone for your input. I also don't like the surface of the prints. My R1800 prints were nice and smooth and the 3880 has bumps or looks like the print has a ink texture to it" - SERIOUSLY NOW, does someone really have to tell you that's the PAPER, not the PRINTER/ink?

Jo, the R1800 same print on the same paper looks much smoother. It's like you can see the ink droplets on the 3880.

The R1800 does have the gloss optimizer which could be smoothing things a little.....but I still think there is something wrong with your 3880. Could be laying down ink erraticaly......the norm for the 3880 is beautiful prints........Peter

Norman what is your platen adjusted to? Standard, wider, widest. Thin, thiner or thinnest?

I think it's time to check the print head alignment--run the auto mode first.

Thanks guys,

ecidi - It's standard
iweiner - I thought it was just automatic. I'll have to read up on that.
Peter - I also think it may have gotten some trauma in shipping.

p.1 #19 · Why I hate my Epson 3880

B&H has shipped my replacement printer for the one that didn't work. They told me that they would not accept my first printer back unless I had the Epson box placed in a second protective box. I purchased an outside box, packing and paid for someone to pack it up since I hurt my back unpacking the first one. Now my replacement printer shows up in only an Epson box with no outside box. The box looks like it has been kicking around and instead of having the clear packing tape over the top to close it, there is a lot of B&H tape so I can not see if it has ever been opened. If it has, I don't want it. I told them I wanted a new sealed box that had never been opened and they should use the outside box I provided. I think I will send this back again, without even opening it. So this is how this worked out. What a PIA.

This is not right! B&H does not ordinarily do something like this. You should contact Mr Posner at B&H and complained about this. He shows up now and then here at the Nikon forums to take care of complaints like this. His email address is. [email protected]
