p.1 #1 · Sports Photography Workshop??

I am interested in attending a workshop concentrating on sports…baseball in particular. I am in the Raleigh NC area and would like to find something close. Any suggestions?

No doubt...we all need to DEMAND a 2-3 day workshop from Paul. I would fly to NY or PA for this if he would put one on...NO QUESTIONS ASKED! Let's make it happen, brother.

Paul, I can think of so many topics that would be useful to learn more about. Not in any particular order,

stopping action; not just freezing…maybe with some slight blur at times, but when?,
composition (what is the story being told?)
cropping,
when to shoot vertically or horizontally,
what angles are most effective?,
shooting in low light,
flash,
shooting in RAW or JPEG,
workflow management,
publishing,
copyright considerations,
rules about getting permission from facility to take photos,
rules about getting permission from various subjects to take/publish their photos,
etc, etc, etc.
Anybody, please add to this list of topics that would be useful seminar topics.

Billy -- you may have said this with tongue in cheek, but you are right on the money. Paul could hold a seminar (and you and Frank L could help....) I believe there are many many shooters who would go. Count me among those looking for the registration materials. I'm serious. There are so many talented people that we could have our own seminar. More than the education would be the fun of meeting so many shooters I respect.

stop action......... fast shutter speed

slight blur........when you want to show movement usually in motorsports

comp.......... face,eyes,ball,peak action,

cropping........tight get rid of everything that dont support the image, then crop more

vertical/horiz.......vertical for vertical sports I.E. basketball, horz for horz sports I.E football

angles.....get low to get rid of clutter background,or get high and shoot down to rid of clutter, an angle that no else is getting IE. lay down

low light......bump iso to get SS you need dont worry with noise, fast glass

flash......use sparingly when allowed

raw/jpeg.......shooting 10-20k images, no time to edit, deadline shoot jpeg.....no hurry, want a little latitude in processing, cant get it right in camera, just want to shoot raw

workflow mang.......find something that works and then perfect it to fit you

publishing......network,be nice,submit,ask

copyright........ get it if you need it,but not on every single image

rules permission from facility.......ask pres, commish,be professional, show proof of insurance

rules permission publish photo.........if you think you need a release get it, read the rules on your cred.

extras..........learn how to run a business correctly and professionaly, why you need insurance, dont give work away just to shoot an event

there you go that will be 1500$

Andy

there's also Rich Clarkson's out in Colorado Springs...he has access to the Olympic Training Center and this year being an Olympic year, there should be some great talent to shoot during the workshop.

Check out your local university. Often they have photo classes and some are even specialized for sports.

While my comment may have been lined with a touch of tongue in cheek, I am very serious about always learning new and improved ways to not only create better photos, but to enjoy myself while doing so. Someone once told me if you have fun working, it really doesn't feel that much like work. I would definitely be the first to send in my registration papers should Paul be able to find the time in his busy schedule to set something like this up.

Like what has all ready been said before, the 2 big ones that I know about are the sports shooter academy and the one in Colorado Springs. The SSA one I think you have to apply in order to get in. This year the Colorado Springs workshop I think is during the Olympics, so I doubt you will get any actual members of team USA. I wouldnt mind checking out one of them, but they are a bit more $$$ than I want to spend.

H&H Color Labs has a Sports Photography "Boot Camp" once or twice a year. They cover T&I, action, plus some business insight.

Billy lets drive and make it a road trip! I'm sure we could talk gear the whole way there to pass the time.
