Put me in the wish it had it list (articulating LCD), I do mostly landscape and macro....often placing my camera in positions it's almost impossible to see the LCD.
@artsupreme: 1DII or this camera is a hard choice. I have to admit I have not been able to shoot with it, just touch it and shoot with no card. I have always found the 1DmkII a bit too soft for my taste, even though the 8mp for many applications wasn't a problem. The AA filter was just a bit too strong for me, so I am quite sure the image quality versus speed being close would make me choose the new compact DSLR. But still, I already said it, I'll stay in the 1D league and keep my 1Ds'es (mkII and III) for a while. I am not even tempted to the 1DX so far. Is that enough of EOSfun and a hint that I can share within the NDA?

The camera will be EOSfun to many, but I'll stay with my 1DsmkIII's for a while. That is probably the most important hint I can give now
That doesn't like a very eosfun hint! If you would rather stick with a blocky heavy brick, with no movies, inferior liveview, slow fps over the new cam
What is the new 5D3 then 3pt AF, 2fps and 16MP
Or hopefully it just means that you really, REALLY, REALLLLY are seriously madly truly psycho obsession-level deeply in love forever with those 3 extra little MP and nothing more hah.

I see guys filming with 5DII/70-200's hand holding all the time at the race tracks. They have to hold it up to their eyes and use one of these at minimum, or even more expensive rigs:
Filming with smaller lenses is even easier. They make huge rigs for these things. Checkout cinema5D, there's a whole other world out there.
We don't know what Canon will release but if they release a 5D successor without an articulating screen and fail to release some other 5D'ish "video body" that includes one they will be ticking off a very large crowd and I could see it becoming the new 5DII AF debacle. I realize a lot of photographers probably haven't used a modern swivel but they are built so good now you don't even know it's there unless you pop it out and use it. I'm sure a lot of people are thinking 1990's Sony camcorder style but that's far from it.
Keep in mind it's a new thing for DSLRs so there will be a lot of opposition to them - kind of like not too long ago when people used to say "why would anyone ever want to text message, just pick up the phone and call". ...Show more →
and remember how utterly insane everyone went AF was released, how dare ANY pro model have AF, leave that to the consumer toy rubbish
(too bad Canon didn't listen though, then our xxD and 5 series would have the top AF and the 1 series would still be doing MF or Rebel AF )

Look around at what Sony, Olympus, Fuji, Panasonic etc. have been doing recently with the compact lines. They are taking market share with innovative products, starting from the bottom up.
You are aware that Canon is releasing a mirrorless camera in 2012, aren't you?

Yes, the odds are against it.
Live view is not only for video or checking your pictures in playback mode.
It's a necessity for landscape, product, and architecture photography when coupled with any of Canon's tilt and shift lenses (Specially when tilting the focal plane)...Also LCDs get warm and that affects noise in high temperature environments. Moving it away from the camera could help in that regard.

I know what you are saying guys. This is what I was hoping for since Canon showed us this 4K concept (for those who forgot, see this Engadget topic on the 4K). Canon showed us more innovations last year, but the economical tide and the lack of really threatening competition so far as well as the lack of courage and vision I see in the current Canon management are the reasons why we haven't seen very interesting innovations from Canon lately. They have a lot of technology to give us better EOSfun, but Canon decided the market is not yet ready for it. A 50MP sensor, new hybrid camera technology, backlit sensors, super compact zooms, and a new AF mechanism, it's all in their patent portfolio. I guess we'll have to wait until some new product in the market eats agressively in Canon's core business ...Show more →
There, you nailed it: lack of serious competition!
Like I said before, if the upcoming D800 does not have an articulating screen, why should Canon? Regarding Sony's upcoming FF releases... pleeeeze... where are the lenses? See? No serious competition... yet. In terms of worldwide market share, Canon is still ahead.
I am not sure what gets Canon execs so excited about the upcoming 5D3 sensor. 16 stops of dynamic range? ISO 204,800 that performs just like ISO 1600 on the 5D2? I seriously doubt Canon sensors are that impressive... kinda given up hope on them.
I am very curious about Canon's patents for large (i.e., APS-C and FF size) backlit sensors and new AF mechanisms. Does Canon plan to surprise us with their 2012 Photokina releases?

That sit back on your throne on top of the hill sort of thing is what makes companies eventually go from kings of the hill to peasants and companies not afraid of trying to kill competitors before they even knew there was a market become the most valued companies in the world.
I've seen Canon management showing lazy, slow, long term loser attitudes for well over half a decade now.
They have had so much tech ready they probabyl could've already had Nikon dead and buried and Sony too afraid to even begin.
Now they sit and react and marketing says no no we might not have protected this or that 10x over but only 7x over if we dare do that. I recall one Canon guy in some video taken a few years back when asked about Canon's plans for moving FF forward he said we are so insanely ahead of Nikon we are so great we have no need to do anything we will just sit as kings of the hill, nobody is within years of our of FF technology or ability (and he said this like less than a year before Nikon comes out with their first FF body ) and even if we are wrong and somehow some else else gets there sooner than years and years from now we could always just react. It just sounded like such a lazy, arrogant view to me, I had bad feelings about their management ever since seeing that video from some trade show in Europe somewhere.

Ah, someone asked me via PM how the rate button works. Well, it's not different from the zoom button: you press the loupe button and turn the wheel clockwise or the other way around and you'll zoom in or zoom out to check focus and other image details. Well, do the same with the rate button: press it and turn the wheel, you get the idea. what do you think happens? You believe it's meant to rate your lens I have said probably more than I should, but I guess now that an official Canon employee demonstrated how zooming on the back LCD works I am allowed to ask you a question, isn't it? Have EOSfun ...Show more →
So you are saying that when we have five printers hooked up to direct print button at once and make five direct prints, it is used to rate which print came out best?
Any idea when this mysterious 5DX will be released? I need to start planning my expenditures. I'd been thinking of buying the G1X for (dare I say?) eosfun (yikes!), but that would impact my possibly getting the new 5D if it is in the near future for release. I prefer the 5D for my work.
My top purchases this year (I hope):
G1X
5DX
Samyang 24/1.4
28-300L IS
I can live without the G1X and continue with my G10 for a while. But my full frames are the 5Dc and 1Ds2, so in need of upgrade to modern FF with video.
Hopefully someone knows something, or Canon will announce the release date soon.
Thanks EOSfun for the eosfun! (I can't believe I'm saying that!)

I'd rather have a wireless connected version of " target="_blank" rel="nofollow">DSLR controller instead of the USB version that I now use for my Android Phone and Galaxy Tab. That would be my dream version of the articulating screen. But it's not in this camera. Sorry, no EOSfun
wow piping live footage over to ipads and android pads and ipod touches and galaxy phones and all would be nice, you can calibrate them and then, in real time, balance tricky things like sunset white balance to match (using WB card is no use and once you get back home you have forgotten what the balance was like)

hmm so plain old 7D AF, 18MP, 6fps, no articulating screen

So it is better than 5D2 but worse than 1DX so is it better or worse than:
7D [ ]
1D2n [ ]
1D3 [ ]
1D4 [ ]
please fill in "better"/"worse" in supplied boxes
All depends. I mean, if I can get 7/1 series AF, servo accuracy as well, robust build, excellent IQ, dual cards and save a few bucks over a 1DIV/X, then it's better than the 1 series. Maybe not in "overall" category, but in the, "hey, this does everything you need/want, while that does everything you need/want, while having a few extra things" it could win.
I'm very excited for this pending rumor/announcement (and you guys know how I am about that stuff).
Any idea (without me combing through several pages) when the "theorized" date is?
