EXACTLY.
You'll never see me complain about anything else on the 5D2. To me, AF is such a basic function, that not providing the ability to reliably focus with outer points with fast primes is an epic fail.
I actually switched to Nikon when the 5D2 came out just because they didn't upgrade the AF from the 5DC. It seemed like a slap in the face. It would have been easy to do, but they didn't.
The only reason I came back was because I was "homesick", but I bought a 1DMKIII when I came back and have been really happy with it, and my 1DsMKII.
Canon makes incredible fast primes. They need to give us an AF system that supports them.
Center point focus and recompose is not an option.

I'm quite certain the 5d2 is not an epic failure. For a camera with 1 good AF point, it seems to do pretty well commercially... and you can't argue with the IQ
I was referring to AF performance specifically. As someone who see's AF system (re entirety) functionality, reliability and accuracy as a key element in DSLR performance I would consider recycling an already weak AF system in what was then a modern body as a failure. Doing so again would qualify as an epic failure, IMO.
I refuse to invest in an under spec'd camera. YMMV.

I can't see why you have a problem? If the AF isn't good enough for you, then Canon have many other bodies with better AF

Have a look at my profile--I am well aware of what bodies provide better AF. My point is the 5DII shouldn't have an AF system that performs on par with a rebel in regards to outer point performance, nor should its replacement. If you don't agree, well, that's on you.

+1
You shouldn't have to spend 7K+ on a brick to obtain FF with pro AF, it's really that simple. This philosophy of "buy a 1DSIII or 1DX" isn't going to fly much longer, too much competition now. Let's hope we see pro AF in the 5DII successor.
Matt, I find it hard to believe that Canon will keep the same AF system of the Mark II in the new camera. If they indeed decide to do so then.....it would be their loss. To what extent the new AF system will improve upon the current 5D Mark II will remain to be seen, of course. I got the hunch it would similar to that of the 7D.
I agree, Joshua. Ideally I'd love a '5DIII/5DX' (or what ever they want to call it) with at least 19 points that all perform similarly to that of the 5DII's center point for around 3K. If they could manage that, I would have no problem at all investing in multiple cameras.

Not full frame with better AF unless you pay 3x as much. Thats why this issue is so emotive. You shouldn't have to buy a top of the range 1D series camera (with its massive pricetag) just to get a balanced specification. Its really up to Nikon to slay this particular dragon, a D700 with a more detailed sensor for a 5D price would improve Canon's game IMHO. I love my 5D2, but on some paying jobs I reach for my 7D just because I trust its AF far, far more.
I find it difficult to believe the 5D3 won't have improved AF, the real question is how much better it will be.

I clearly remember sighing rather too deeply when I received my first 5DII, which I had really hoped had moved the AF on from the 5D, but no, not really at all.
The 5DII's weakness has always been it's rather prehistoric AF, to make the same mistake in a '5DIII' would be a bad move IMHO. I think the 5DII was intenionally 'crippled' for AF so as not to diminish 1 series sales. I really hope they don't do it again.

They won't ... as it's simply unthinkable. As you said, the AF system of the 5D II is rather "prehistoric" and that's not far from the truth in this digital era. I think the worst-case scenario is they use the 7D AF system ... which is good enough for me!
Well, the specs on that site may be true but the image is not. It is from the existing 5D Mark II. No M-Fn button and the rotating dial doesn't have the locking button on the top, among others.
Canon will bring back ECF, huh? Interesting.....

Would you expect to get as good AF on a body that cost 1/3 then.
The problem is that people here like to have a 1Ds3 or 1Dx. But they like to pay for a 5D or 7D
doubt it. I thought i saw the MFn button on the kenya samples. this one doesnt have it...unless that was the 7D2 in kenya....but then what of the big FF hump?

I expect to have more than one usable AF point on a camera that costs as much as a 5DII does Lars.
Lars Johnsson wrote:
Most people can use more than one AF point
lol. its really simple and has been said before. there is no reason a camera costing 3x or 4x the price of a rebel should have the same crummy 9pt AF as a rebel. We arent ONLY paying more for FF...we'd like a side of AF too
regardless of how well some can use the other points, they're still crappy compared to the outer points on say a 7D...which is about 1/2 the price.
Lars Johnsson wrote:

And most people who own or have experience with the 5DII also understand that it's peripheral points are unreliable/inaccurate and perform as well as a rebel's.
