I have no idea what sales figures or profit margins Nikon had on the D700, but I always perceived it as a fantastic, hugely popular camera. 3.5 years on you can still buy and use a D700 for years to come without thinking that you're using outdated technology, apart from not having video.
It makes perfect sense for the D800 to follow this trend of being a smaller more affordable D4, in particular when it comes to sharing the same sensor which keeps the cost of making those down.

I'm sure there are actual photographers out there who would put 36Mp to good use, but the vast majority of 'photographers' who would buy this would be the techy drooler types who would simply be admiring all the 'detail' they've captured on their displays. Detail which will allow them to 'make huge enlargements' and 'crop heavily', if only they could capture an image that was worth doing anything at all with.

Myself, I'm starting to look at a replacement for my D200 which I bought 5.5 years ago. I haven't actually held a D700, ever. Nearly bought one 3 years ago tempted by a good deal, but couldn't justify it as it's just a hobby. I decided to wait for a D700 type camera with added video capability, that will do me just fine for the next 10 or so years. A 16Mp D800 would be perfect for me.

If it comes out with 36Mp I'll pass. I'm not going to pay an extra $1000 or so for just a sensor that produces images that will grind my computer to a halt. And I'm not going to pay an extra $1000 either just to save in a smaller jpg format either. Then I'll wait for another year to see if there's really no proper replacement for the D700, or possibly a D7000 type camera with D700 sensor, and then buy a D700 which would have come down on price a bit more, and something else that does video.

Kind of entertaining reading all the high emotion comments about a camera that, as far as we can confirm, doesn't exist. When the D800 finally does come out and all the rumors are gone, it will be what it is and some will be happy about it and some will be disappointed.

So here we are talking about a D700 replacement.. that is going to *most likely* cost $3000-$4000, an attach it to lenses that cost thousands of dollars, and the biggest gripe about 36MP is that nobody wants to upgrade their Pentium to an i5 or i7 for a measly $500? With all the expenses involved with photography, I find the PC end of it the least expensive.

I personally don't care what Nikon does. I want to go back to full frame, i just want to see what in the hell it is.. so I can decide what to do! :-)

That's just an advert for Amazon? Love this bit: "You will be able to buy it not only in stores around the world but on the internet as well."

Such insight, such detailed info, such BS...

Well Nikonrumors.com has a Nikon announcement on Feb 7th and they think it will be the D800. They had the right info on the D4 so here's hoping they are correct on the D800.

They totally missed the D4 until the day before it was announced.

Could you be more wrong Here is a link from the nikonumors site from December 19th that had it nailed. They also had posts well in advance of that date with the D4 specs almost 100%. ..

They "predicted" it all the way back to October. When they put out a 100 predictions about the same thing, eventually one will be right--sheer Law of Probability suggests that. It's sort of like fortune tellers and astrologers. They were also tellling us the D800 was "for certain" on Jan. 6. I don't put any credibility into the site at all. Waste of time.

I may have set the wrong tone in my last post to TWO23 I did not mean it to be hostile. I guess my point was that to dismiss nikonrumors entirely would be a mistake. They often have the right info on upcoming Nikon gear releases. For someone like myself who is looking at various Nikon full frame options it can be helpful. I'm not shooting a ton right now so if something is going to be released and I can wait a few months it's good info.

By the way domdog..what's the difference between spending time here on FM or clicking on Nikonrumors every now and then? Either way I'm not out shooting?

If you "wasted your time" on that site you would have known that they said NOT to expect the D800 on Jan 6. They don't predict anything there. He has sources, some better than other. He posts some of the info he's given to give people something to talk about. Nothing shady, just as his site name suggests, rumors.

Excuse me, but I doubt you are shooting 100% of your time, work or spare time, so when you are browsing the web shouldn't you be shooting too? There comes a time each day when you put the camera down and browse for what ever reasons, education, relaxation etc.

The idea that if you even browse a rumour site you're wasting time that you should be using to shoot is rather silly. Sorry.

I never said the internet was a waste of time. I said rumor sites were. Talking about rumor sites is even a bigger waste....
