+1
What set of Nikon Optics is able to resolve a 36mp Sensor?

Add 7. FM being clogged with threads about the D800 being soft, posted by folks who should not have bought one

I think everyone will be happy ... well, as happy as can be, given that nothing is ever 100% perfect, and selecting gear always involves some compromises. And not all at once, at least everybody. Forget model numbers.

These rumored D800 specs, if true, do not sound like a replacement for the D700, but rather a whole new body aimed clearly at a sub-set of studio and landscape shooters who need\demand the highest resolution. Depending on the AF and build quality, which I believe is all speculation at this point, this could either be a $4,000 body with pro-grade AF and build, or a 5D MkIII competitor with modest build and AF, priced to compete at that level.

The second option sounds more logical to me, since it does not sound like the market for $4,000 pro-grade studio\landscape body is all that big (evidenced by sales of the 3DX, Canon apparently not planning on a 1Ds MkIII upgrade, and the success of the 5D MkII with this group). The second option also allows Nikon to go after what I think is the real prize, and the bulk of the 5D MkII unit sales: well heeled soccer moms\dads (substitute kid's activity to suit: baseball, hockey, dance, etc). Keep the retail well under $3,000.

That leaves the current D700 crowd disappointed, but the D4 is not even out yet. I think the D700 crowd is too big to ignore. Sure, not as big as the 5D MkII crowd, but D700 shooters are pro's, amateurs, enthusiasts, etc. Meaning these people buy lenses ... good lenses ... and other gear. They want a small body D4 ... not a 5D ... overwhelmingly, as evidenced by this and other threads, polls, etc. Contrary to what some have said, I do not believe the D700 cannibalized the 3D all that much: D700 shooters seem to fall into two predominant groups: those that also bought a D3, and those that never would have bought a D3.

So I think we'll see a small body D4 near the end of the year or early next. In the meantime, my D700 works just fine, and I have no interest in this rumored D800. But I do hope Nikon launches it and soon because it would be a great addition to their line up, generating cash, leading to more good things down the road for all who shoot with Nikon.

Dear sweet Nikon Gods!!! please, please, please don't let this be a 36mp camera!!!!! if anything a D700s (100% VF, dual cards, D3s ISO performance) would be awesome!!!!! a D800 with D4 sensor/performance would be super awesome!!!!!

Sincerely, Nikon guy who doesn't want to buy a new computer to handle ridiculously large files!

Yes, because we all know that a 16MP, or 21MP sensor is far more flexible.. than say a 36MP sensor that one can change the file size if need be? I really don't get this logic.

Seems to me the same crowd that is against a High Res camera, are also the ones that think noise will also be higher...diffraction will set in at F5.6, and dynamic range will suck. Not the case. More MP's give you more options.. everything else will either be as good, and most likely better than the D700. Let's examine a few threads that I have NOT heard of yet....

" I upgraded my D70s to a D7000.. damn noise sucks on the D7000, can't wait to get my D70s Back"
" My Nikon D1 has awesome 11.8 µm pixel size, My lousy D700 is 8.45 µm.. and it totally SUCKS! Damn this D700, can't nikon go back to 2.74 MP like the D1.. so I can have better IQ?? "

More MP's will not make your high end glass perform less, it will make it perform the same.
More MP's will not make diffraction set in at larger apertures, the diffraction was always there, you can now zoom in more to see it's effects easier.
More MP's will not make it harder to hand hold a camera and get great results. It will make it easier to see your camera shake if you choose to pixel peep a 36MP image at 1:1
More MP's will not increase noise. Noise might go up, but, so does resolution, again.. this is what you might get from viewing at 1:1 on screen. Try printing first, then bitch.

I have yet to see how a D800 with 36MP would have a down side. I see an upside. I like options.

I love your thinking.
I'm excited for the D800.
The video and MP haters can stick to using what they use now.

Everybody ought to read these points very carefully until they sink in.

Unfortunately, 99% of folks will do this in the reverse order, or perhaps not even make a print.

The only reason why I might like a D800 to be released with less than 36MP would be to see the bloody noses of everybody who spread those 36MP rumors, complained about it, wrote articles, posted polls etc.

Also for the people complaining that the files will slow done your computer. Try downloading a D3x or 5DII raw file and editing it. You'll see that their isn't much slow down if at all compared to what you use now.

One thing to remember with Nikon is that just because the camera can shoot at 36MP does not mean you have to shoot at 36mp. In the menu you can select a smaller file size and then use the 36Mp for when you fell you may actually need that kind of resolution.

Try downloading 1,000 images ... 1,500 images. Then reviewing, sorting, processing. Try that on something other than a late model, highest end PC or MAC, maxed out with processing speed and RAM.

People have all kinds of needs, skill levels, equipment, etc. Not everyone may have the same technical file handling and processing skills. Seems like a fair number of working pro's and amateurs shooting weddings and events with large amounts of files to work with do not want the added time from dealing with huge files.

Sounds reasonable to me.

Atleast in the current line up, that works only for JPEGs. One cannot choose the size of the RAW files.

True, but then why be forced to pay for a 36 MP sensor? Many don't want or need it, and there will be other trade off's.

There's no right or wrong, just different needs and wants. I'm all for Nikon putting a 36 MP D800 out there. I just don't want it.

Now a small body D4, if it delivered high ISO at or better than a D3s, I'd gladly anti up $4,000.

Wouldn't the DX crop mode of a 36mp D800 offer more manageable resolution with the same clarity that a FF sensor offers though??

If so then surely a 36mp D800 would be great as you could ramp the res up for landscape or portraiture/studio work, and switch to DX crop for weddings or event photography??

I'm certainly hoping that the DX crop is big enough while still being good enough up to around ISO3200

That would make some lens choices a little easier
