It's almost impossible to be sure, but the portrait crop from the kit lens looks like it was backfocused, with best focus on the white coffee container. The menus in the background look like they're almost in focus too.

Interesting comparison here with the C/Y 28mm F2.8
Maybe it's just me or maybe it's because I'm looking at it on my 27" imac screen where I can see both at the same time but on the first picture, the ZA rendition looks more detailed and contrasty. It has a richer look not just from it being slightly warmer, and it's really, not that much warmer if you compare the sky blues, but just the central tree trunk itself looks more alive.
If you look at the dirt tracks, there appears to be more detail in the ZA picture as well.

Hmm nobody else thinks the corners look markedly better on the ZA?
Only in the 2nd set. In the first set the ZA only shows more CA and somewhat warmer/richer colors. I think the kit lens probably has some field curvature (I remember a shot from denoir/Luka showing that).

I know what you mean but I took a whole series of them, all with camera rested on table, and they all have that soft of a look to them. IMO they look worse as the focal length increased. Granted, I expect it to be not great wide open, I don't think it even achieves mediocre.
f/4.5, kit lens at 42mm, image has some PP (including a tiny bit of NR and I did not boost the exposure)

I see what you mean. I notice MORE difference looking at the overall frame than I do at the crops.

The kit lens indeed gets worse at longer FL. I tested this myself and would not use it past 35mm. From 24-28 it's pretty darn good, outside of that it's still very usable until about 35mm where it starts to get pretty soft.
It has too much CA below f8, and too much distortion... but it is a kit lens after all.
I concluded, for my needs I'll use it from 21-28mm. I have the CV 15 and CV 35/2.5 to supplement it. I wanted to hate the 18-55 because I really like the compact CV 21/4 but the more I think it over, swapping out the CV 21 for the 18-55 is a smart move. It provides a little extra versatility, close focus, and pseudo macro capability.
I'm still with the others who are hoping Sony brings out some classy primes. I hope the ZA 24 doesn't kill further lens development in that focal length for the near future... but it probably will, at least from Sony. Something like small 24/2.8 and 35/2.8 would be nice IMO.

there's always the new sigma 19/2.8 and 30/2.8. haven't heard anybody talk about them here in all the excitement about the new fuji. i'm still waiting to see a picture of them on camera to judge size.

I am really interested to see how the 19/2.8 fares. I hope it's good wide open...

I re-ran the test today with a different copy of the 18-55 - it seems to be a slightly better version. If there is interest, I can post the results. That lens looked better at f/5.6 in the corners and may be closer to the Zeiss overall.
I also shot a set with OSS off to see if there was a difference (I did not see anything). The shots were handheld, because my gorilla pod was too short.

The size doesn't look to bad on the 19/2.8. It's about identical to the length of my ZM 50/1.5, including the NEX adapter. It is just a millimeter or so smaller in diameter than the NEX 16.2.8.
Basically, it's about the same size as two 16/2.8s stacked on top of each other.
If this proves to be a good lens, it could answer a lot of issues on the wide end, although it isn't all THAT wide.

These Sigma lenses seem kinda run of the mill to me. The 19/2.8 is neither really wide, nor really fast, nor very compact, can't focus very closely. Nothing distinguishing. The purpose of 30/2.8 is also quite obscure. I'd understand a version of their own 30/1.4 but f/2.8
The 24/1.8 ZA isn't going to be beaten by those...

yeah, if they'd made the 30mm an f/2 it would be super exciting. at f/2.8 it's just a little boring.

It's quite possible as well; see Samsung. Even if we add 7mm of the difference in flange distance the lens could have still been considered a pancake. Optically great to boot.
ARE YOU LISTENING SONY!!! I for one don't want pancakes at any cost but more fast or wide lenses (or both) is in order.
