Take care with focus shift when manually focussing the E ZA 24 f/1.8. Use the good method otherwise you might have a very bad impression of lens performance.

I posted some examples here:

Interesting! I wonder if this is part of what Lloyd was fighting with in his tests?

I haven't had a chance to read through all this thread yet, but whats the point of comparing a f1.8 lens with a f3.5 one at f5.6 !!!!!!!!

Obviously the Zeiss has slightly nicer rendering and better contrast then the kit zoom.
But this is not the reason to buy it

The reason to buy it its performance at f1.8, and also the performance at f3.5 compared to the kit

I mean running a Leica Summilux ASPH at f5.6 is a crazy reason to buy a lens. You should have bought a 50mm summarit !!!

Someone asked for a comparison over in the NEX images thread. Might as well put away the flame thrower, it just looks silly.

You know i was lusting this Zeiss 24mm but i'm thinking a better option for a 35mm lens would be to buy a Fugi X100 used for a bit less money and it could be a backup camera to my Nex 5N. Does that sound crazy? Because there really aren't many good fast 35mm equivalent lenses.

Only problem with that is you then have an extra camera body which is rapidly depreciating whereas a lens should hold it's value better... I am trying not to accumulate any more camera bodies.

However, who knows if the ZA24 will hold it's value or not. Amazon Warehouse had a used one listed over the weekend for $925, kind of suprised me to see it that cheap already since it's still out of stock.

Good point but after selling my D3, the Nex 5N is my only camera, a X100 wouldn't be a shabby backup but like you said it will depreciate further I am sure. I think the Zeiss 24mm will as well though probably in the $700-800 range within a year.

Once that new Fuji X Pro camera hits shelves that X100 may go down even further.

I was the person (or one of them) that asked for the comparison. Not everyone buys a lens just to shoot it wide open ya know.

It may be hard to believe, I know, but some people want to multipurpose their lenses AND in the context of the NEX there are very few options in the 24-25mm range that don't come with compromises like color shift, corner smearing, and some of them still have relatively high price tags. So, as someone who is primarily using their NEX for hiking where landscape use will be important, knowing how the ZA 24/1.8 looks compared to the kit lens at f5.6 & f8 can be good to know.

Obviously the Zeiss has slightly nicer rendering and better contrast then the kit zoom
I couldn't agree more. thanks to this comparison it is very obvious that the Zeiss has slightly better rendering and contrast.

At this stage it seems that the Leica Elmar 24 is the answer for a 24mm with excellent performance on the NEX, unless wide aperture work matters.

My findings exactly. Which is why I declined to buy the ZA 24 and ordered the Elmar.

understood

I think the za 24mm is excellent in the corners compared to the kit which is great for landscapes
