I am jumping in at the end here and apologies if this has been suggested earlier.......but most people on here have any amount of money to spend on what they want......so what about a new parameter..the best sub $300 canon lens for example?
I would have to say mine is a toss up between a f1.4 fd and the EOS equivalent...both s/h via eBay ( the EOS lens came from a USA seller as it happens...and when he described it as the sharpest lens he had owned he wasn't kidding!).

I'm probably one of the poorest people on the forums.

Best sub 300 dollar lens? 85 1.8.
I have that as well..great lens....but I think the 50mm 1.4 has the edge for me...I have a more expensive zoom that will do what the 85mm does..just...but don't use either...

Send your II back and get it serviced...II beats up I in every category.
You got me thinking, Robert. When I got my Mk II, I did some comparison shots and now I use whichever lens I have in the bag or on the body that I am using at any point. but now based on your suggestion I am wondering whether I should do some more test shots before sending it to CPS for service. Any suggestions?
If you look at the the images the zeiss 100mm vs the canon 100mm IS you will say zeiss the zeiss is. However you have to focus the lens manually (not my strong suit) and pay twice as much.
My vote is the 100mm IS
2nd best lens ever is the SIgma 70mm f/2.8
Tie between my 500/4 and my 70-200/2.8L IS II. Superb lenses. Oh, and although my 70-200/2.8L IS I was excellent, the new II beats it by a country mile, especially at 200mm.
