Bummer! Dunno what the banding is, but that is not good. Glad the seller gave you a refund.

Could that be caused by a dud card?

Cam, sorry to hear that the deal has turned sour, yet the most important thing is that you got your money back.

That stripe accross the image....I've never seen anything like it, so I hesitate to say it's the shutter. It could be a defect in the sensor and/or the associated electronics. Either way, don't look back on it......if and when I get 1DX, I might let you have my good low count 1DsMkII on favourable terms.

I suppose it's possible, though the card was fresh out of my 7D and I've never seen it before. To eliminate that possibility, I might have slapped in a different card but was so shocked I immediately set about contacting the seller.

I'd be lying if I said I knew the cause of the problem Peter. Lower ISO shots did not reveal the same problem but it was evening here when I turned it on. Low light/high ISO was almost the first thing I tried. I should say too that this was but one example, there are others that had horizontal lines, finer, not truly a band that just looked like noise. On other shots, there was virtually no horizontal pattern at all, just noise from poor lighting/exposure/high ISO (I was playing, trying to get a feel for it, fewer than 100 shots fired in less than ideal conditions).

As for your offer, you're too kind. By all means stay in touch and let's see what happens. Right now I'm gonna put my cash under my pillow and hug my 7D good night...

Green band does not indicate the shutter issue. Shutter speed maybe too fast for the light source cycle. Try slower speed. This is what you have (Manual, 1/125 sec, f/??, ISO 1600). Either that or bad CF card.

I think this was a known problem with some of the 2Ns. I remember mine had a little bit of banding at ISO 3200 but it was very negligible (not like yours). Did you have the latest firmware on it? If yes, then probably that would need a fix from Canon if they still service that camera.

To his credit, the seller refunded my money (claiming it was the first he'd seen of it, never shot high ISO, blah, blah, blah). The refund is a good thing and he apologized but my pride is a bit wounded and, sadly, so too is my faith in buying used gear from people without 'feedback'. .....

Hi Folks,

I am the seller of the camera being discussed. I get the sense that the OP seems to indicate I attempted to sell a lemon to an unsuspecting buyer. That is not my style, I have sold several bodies previously without any issues (see ebay freeback id: ananda_sub). If my goal was the pass off a lemon, I could have just kept the money since the bill of sale stated the camera was sold AS IS. I treat every buyer of my equipment the same as I would like to be treated if I was the buyer.

Anyways, I cannot re-create the problems reported by the OP. I have gone through all my images and the highest ISO I have of an image is at ISO 800. The image at the bottom of the post is one at ISO 800 shot at my daughter's hockey game couple of days ago under extremely poor lighting conditions.

In fact I have also shot a series for shots in burst mode at ISO 1600 after returning the money to the buyer and cannot see the banding reported by the OP. I am suspecting some other issue other than the camera (perhaps a bad card). I have included a link below to a zip file of the raw images from the burst sequence, I would appreciate if you guys can take a few minutes to look through the images and see if you can see a problem that I don't notice. I would like to send it to Canon if any repairs are needed.

Bottom line is I never really wanted to sell the camera, however I got a great price on a 5DII body and have to sell it since I cannot keep two bodies.

Zip file with the raw files from burst mode (please PM me if you have trouble downloading the file): http://www.mediafire.com/?2r255t4lks7p1zs

Cam,

If you are still interested in a 1D MKIIn, I have one that I purchased from PetKal about a year ago. I'm local so you are welcome to try it first. PM me if interested. PM Peter if you want to know anything about the camera as I literally have not used it.

Ananda,

Sensor @ 1600 iso look pretty normal, the shutter speed of the sequence is too low (1/15) to verify the shutter. Would you try faster speed like 1/4000-1/8000

Sorry Ananda, I'm not trying to steal your sale but I was typing my offer to help a fellow Winnipeger before your post appeared. Kudos for returning the seller's money and trying to identify/correct the problem.

Communication with Ananda has been clear and concise, through email, phone calls and three meetings in person. At no time did I suggest that he 'knowingly' sold me a lemon nor would I in a public forum. My tests indicated a problem and he was good enough to offer the refund.

For the record, I didn't think it relevant to mention he was an FM member as our dealings had occurred locally outside the forum.

Also, for the record, when another member suggested there may have been a card error, my initial reaction was to email Ananda to ask if he could replicate the problem on his CF card. I too will be curious as to what others think of the images.

If the issue is my card and I've over reacted, I will apologize in person to Ananda.

I will do that in the morning and and post the raw files when there is light tomorrow. As 1/4000 - 1/8000 will be too dark in interior lighting.

Blown away by LR3 noise reduction.

Took the same image above and did some noise reduction in LR3.

Howdy, Larry.
The irony is that my main 1DMkIIN blew its shutter recently at 50,000 counts. And I though I didn't need a backup 1DMkIIN.

Well, Larry, I hope you are using 200 f/1.8, and that it is serving you very well.

I feel your pain. With no back up my 1D2 blew shutters twice on out of state shoots. Both shutters died in the 50,000 count range. Very disappointing.

This is a bigger lottery than the Sigma QC. What if I say that my 30D's shutter blew after 3 months of very moderate use (about 18000 clicks). My N's shutter is running strong at over 120K activations (although I have experienced an annoying mirror failure in the autumn of 2010).

200+ frames a day, every day for 3 months is "very moderate use" ?

Remind me not to buy a camera from you!

Hi Guys,

I took a series of burst images at ISO 1600 and 1/4000 of a sec from the 1DIIn being discussed by the OP. I would appreciate if you guys could take a look and let me know if there is a problem.

PM me if you have trouble downloading the zip file with the raw images. Thanks for your time

I got the sense he was bummed out and disappointed his new toy didn't work out. Based on knowing you are a FM er and stand behind your sales I don't think anyone should hesitate to purchase from you. In fact I would even leave you positive feedback just for your professionalism and refund.
